Default I just saw a comet!

Comet PANSTARRS is skating around the Western horizon this month. It was hiding behind a bank of thin, high cloud when I first looked but then it peeked out from underneath. I shall go "over the hump" to the West side of the Spring Mountains tomorrow for a better view and maybe attempt some pictures. This all depends on cloud free skies of course.

Later this year comet ISON will appear. Some say that will be a monster, better than the 1997 Hale-Bopp comet.

I missed my ride on the Hale-Bopp.

Maybe next time?

Default Comets were failures

All through the 50's, 60's and 70s every comet that they said would come was a complete and utter fail. (Remember Kahoutek?) Then starting in the 80s, I started seeing very prominent comets and even got some great pics with my old 35mm camera. Kyahutake was IMMENSE. Hale-Bopp was very clear. I'd have to do some deep digging to find the pics, but if I do I'll scan and post. I have a picture of Halley's that looks like small fuzzball that has no visible tail, but the fuzzball bends toward a tail. I made an astro-tracker of my own design to mount the camera on. I was proud of that because I got great star shots with it. (It's still under my piano)
________

Update: I just remembered that I bought some 15x 80mm binoculars for target spotting a ways back. Yahoo!!! I've got a telescope, but there's nothing like just going out with binocs for casual observing.

Is this the sign of a truly well rounded person, an astro-tracker under the piano? Just love that.

I've had fairly good luck on comets, with binoculars.

What truly stunned me was a vast green and white display that I was afraid was a falling comet or meteorite that was very prominent in the sky. Turned out to be a Soviet satellite that was burning up in the atmosphere.

Talking

Fishslayer and I seem to be bent in the same direction: In 1975 a friend of had a 1964 4 door Comet-Brush painted red. As it went down the street it had a very long tail that was kind of blue.Ivan

I've been hoping to catch the comet but the weather hasn't been cooperating... plus I don't have a clean view of the western horizon due to hills and trees.

If you enjoy stargazing like myself, i would suggest saving up for some night vision goggles and check out the sky with them on. You see some pretty weird stuff...when i say weird, i mean WEEIIRDDDDD!
