My letter from the White House
Dear Michael:
Thank you for taking the time to write. I have heard from many Americans regarding firearms policy and gun violence in our Nation, and I appreciate your perspective. From Aurora to Newtown to the streets of Chicago, we have seen the devastating effects gun violence has on our American family. I join countless others in grieving for all those whose lives have been taken too soon by gun violence.
Like the majority of Americans, I believe the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. In this country, we have a strong tradition of gun ownership that has been handed down from generation to generation. Hunting and sport shooting are part of our national heritage. Yet, even as we acknowledge that almost all gun owners in America are responsible, when we look at the devastation caused by gun violence—whether in high-profile tragedies or the daily heartbreak that plagues our cities—we must ask ourselves whether we are doing enough.
While reducing gun violence is a complicated challenge, protecting our children from harm should not be a divisive one. Most gun owners agree that we can respect the Second Amendment while keeping an irresponsible, law-breaking few from inflicting harm on a massive scale. Most also agree that if we took commonsense steps to curtail gun violence, there would be fewer atrocities like the one that occurred in Newtown. We will not be able to stop every violent act, but if there is even one thing we can do to reduce gun violence—if even one life can be saved—then we have an obligation to try.
That is why I asked Vice President Joe Biden to identify concrete steps we can take to keep our children safe, help prevent mass shootings, and reduce the broader epidemic of gun violence in this country. He met with over 200 groups representing a broad cross-section of Americans and heard their best ideas. I have put forward a specific set of proposals based off of his efforts, and in the days ahead, I intend to use whatever weight this office holds to make them a reality.
My plan gives law enforcement, schools, mental health professionals, and the public health community some of the tools they need to help reduce gun violence. These tools include strengthening the background check system, helping schools hire more resource officers and counselors and develop emergency preparedness plans, and ensuring mental health professionals know their options for reporting threats of violence. And I directed the Centers for Disease Control to study the best ways to reduce gun violence—because it is critical that we understand the science behind this public health crisis.
As important as these steps are, they are not a substitute for action from Congress. To make a real and lasting difference, members of Congress must also act. As part of my comprehensive plan, I have called on them to pass some specific proposals right away. First, it is time to require a universal background check for anyone trying to buy a gun. Second, Congress should renew the 10-round limit on magazines and reinstate and strengthen the assault weapons ban. We should get tougher on those who buy guns with the purpose of selling them to criminals, and we should impose serious punishments on anyone who helps them do this.
These are reasonable, commonsense measures that have the support of the majority of the American people. But change will not come unless the American people demand it from their lawmakers. Now is the time to do the right thing for our children, our communities, and the country we love. We owe the victims of heartbreaking national tragedies and the countless unheralded tragedies each year nothing less than our best effort—to seek consensus in order to save lives and ensure a brighter future for our children.
Thank you, again, for writing. I encourage you to visit www.WhiteHouse.gov/NowIsTheTime to learn more about my Administration’s approach.
Sincerely,
Barack Obama

yeah I got the same version of the "form" letter. I am sure they have several variations of the same letter, depending on how fervent you are to protect your 2nd ammendment rights.
Boy I am glad I am closer to retiring than just starting out in this world. wow, sad.

What did it say?

I got the same ******* a couple weeks back. I always thought I would be honored and revere a letter from the office of the President of the United States of America and the White House. I was wrong.
I wonder if a copy of it ended up in my FBI and Secret Service files too.

They may be responding to any of the online petitions you may have signed.
Otherwise... Who knows!

I got the exact same email. I could actually feel the care & concern he has for the American people and especially gun owners(insert sarcasm icon here).
I guessing they got my email address from the several online petitions I signed.

Both the S&W and Ruger " Link To Contact Your Elected Officials"
included the President in the list, so unless you unchecked him, your letter went to your Reps and Senators at your state and federal level along with the President, your Governor, Lt. Gov, and state Attorney General.
Go look at the list-
Contact your legislators - Smith & Wesson made it easy! S&W
Link To Contact Your Elected Officials, Please Do This Ruger

There is no doubt that they have us on a list somewhere as a rebel gun owner. I considered that, but what choice do we have . If we do not make our voices known, we will be criminals as soon as he signs any gun ban into law!

I wrote "Uncle Joe" a stamped letter in the mail in mid-January, along with the Speaker of the House & all my reps...finally got a written reply (snail mail) in mid-March...it was a little toned down from that stuff above but not much...I think Biden's letter actually acknowledged self-defense -- unlike BO's...
one thing I can't figure out is, since when did gun ownership become synonymous with "gun violence"?

"Dear Michael..." That a letter written to represent the thinking of the President of The United States addresses the recipient using the familiar, informal, given name seems to me to set about the same tone as an elementary school principal writing to a sixth-grader. I suppose it is someone's idea of a good approach.

"We should get tougher on those who buy guns with the purpose of selling them to criminals, and we should impose serious punishments on anyone who helps them do this."
So how exactly does this impressive stance impact the Administration's scoundrels behind Fast and Furious?

I think the administration wants to turn in our guns and then Eric Holder can sell them in Mexico.
I notice our President wants to limit us to 10 round magazines, but he isn't suggesting that law enforcement be limited to 10 rounds is he? How about the military? How about the Secret Service?
Lets see, the anti gun folks don't want to pass legislation that might prevent someone with severe mental issues from getting a gun, but they don't want anyone to buy a gun with a flash hider, pistol grip, detachable magazine, or telescoping stock.
I see he uses the old if "even one life can be saved" argument. Yet in Chicago they average just under two murders a day and nothing the president proposes would have any impact on that. It seems if he wants to save just one life, he should start in Chicago. It seems like with something like 4-500 murders a year that would be rich pickings. Also, compared with the land mass of the USA, Chicago is a relatively small area and truth be known, the problem isn't all over Chicago, it is certain neighborhoods.
I am still upset over what the government did at Ruby Ridge.

I generally read Fox news but since the Top execs office leaned on journalists recently about the negative tone in their articles, I've noticed that CNN has been leaning away from the far left, just a little. Perhaps journalists smell trouble brewing with the 1st amendment.
I apply the grain of salt to most of their news, but today I saw this one. A ladies letter to the Pres. Good article.

Who has ever gotten satisfaction from a politician? I'm sure there are good ones, I can remember a few good senators and representatives but for the most part they are all hooked up with the money train, nowadays they finish a few years as a senator or representative and then go on to becoming a *******ed lobbiest, it should be against the law for any ex senator or representative or general, admiral, etc. becoming a lobbiest, thats where the problem is...the money train.
All the members of the senate and house of representatives should have wear their sponsors on their coats like NASCAR drivers do. Their largest sponsors would get credit for the back of their jacket like DUPONT, or STANDARD OIL, or EXXON...wear those colors proudly like the NASCAR boys do after all that would let us all know where their true interests lie.

I recalled vaguely what happened at Ruby Ridge, and maybe a month ago Glenn Beck recapped the event during his morning show. It was deeply disturbing to hear the details and further reinforced my belief that no longer can anyone say "That could never happen here." in regard to almost anything.

Another ironic gem:
"From Aurora to Newtown to the streets of Chicago, we have seen the devastating effects gun violence has on our American family."
The streets of Chicago, statistically some of the deadliest in the nation ... currently governed by a mayor whose previous job was where and with whom? And the former home base of which high ranking politicians?
The hypocrisy of such quotations is as laughable as it is maddening, and further proof that there is no honesty to anything the anti crowd offers.
The other element that I find particularly disgraceful is the generic "guilt by association" rhetoric. The aforementioned gun violence was not perpetrated by any responsible & law abiding firearms owners, yet we are still lumped together in a gratuitous mishmash of vilified gun culture fanatics. I have never contributed to the "devastating effects gun violence has on our American family", nor has anyone I personally know. Thus, we are not part of the "problem", nor should we be part of the proposed "solution" implemented to solve the perceived "problem".
I'm glad I haven't received my own copy of this dreck.

Took him long enough to respond. It's been almost five months. I can't stand hearing or watching him on television and usually have to switch channels whenever a state of the union address comes on. And now when I read this letter, I couldn't even get through it, as the same feelings of disgust came over me.

If you will notice, he uses the word "commonsense" in place of common sense. I now understand that when he says it, it has a different meaning than the real term.

You guys must be special....I did the SW distribution and only received ONE reply from that entire list. Form letter from one Senator (sided w/ the Pres.), none of the others on the list bothered to even send an acknowledgement. Bummer, with all our tax dollars being spent, I figured it would be high-quality paper...and I was looking forward to using it as patch material for the Blackpowder summer season....need to write more letters

I think we need to stress how guns are useful. The antis can't envision why we think we need guns. They say guns are only used for killing.
Some guys say they like to target shoot or just like the excitement of owning an AR or exotic gun.
I tell people guns are useful to kill, and that is why I carry a handgun when I go out, and I fully depend on a home AR and several other large capacity weapons for my personal defense.
I may need to protect my family some day. What the attackers look like I do not know. It could be druggies, it could be terrorists, it could be neighborhood punks after the power grid shuts down for a couple weeks. I don't know what the future brings, but I want to be prepared to handle what I can.
I really do believe if 100 million Americans were armed with dependable weapons we would be a safer nation.

I would like to point something out. During the first two years of our president's first term he could have passed anything he wanted to. It was after this time that the Tuscon shootings, the Aurora CO shootings and the Sandy Hook shooting occurred. If he was serious about saving "just one life", why did he blow the chance?
