Default .22 lr ammo recommend.

I went out to shoot this past weekend with the wife and kids.

My concerns are my .22lr ammo it is fresh ammo not stored in my closet for the past 10 years. The ammo is CCI fmj round nose and Federal JHP. The guns are a Walther P22 and Savage 64 semi auto.

The Walther gave me lots of problems on the last outing, but I had not cleaned it from the previous outing. So, I gave it a clean and lube and took it back out this weekend. The CCIs just would not cycle properly at all. The Federals would cycle properly IF you had a death grip on it.

The Savage is brand new out of the box. It had about the same problems with the CCIs. It did better with the Federals, but still was unreliable.

So, anyone else have these problems with with this ammo / gun combo?

Usually the gun manufacture will state what ammo is good to shoot and what will give you problems

Not this time. I called Savage and the lady was very nice and said it should shoot anything. She told me what they use at their factory so, I may see if I can find it. If not she offered to have it picked up and looked at buy there gunsmith.

All .22 semi-auto's are finicky about ammo. You have to find the one that will offer the measure of reliability and accuracy at the same time. You can often get one without the other. Once you find that particular one, but all you can of it.

Your ammo should be fine unless it's been wet or something.

I have a couple of P22's that my wife and I shoot every week, CCI's were the least problematic. I have to admit that I've never seen .22 FMJ or JHP ammo (I'm assuming that was an error and you meant copper plated ammo)

On the P22 you may need to scrub the chamber. My sons have a couple of those each and as long as they shoot the same ammo clip after clip there is no problem. When they first got them they had problems but found it was only after swapping ammo types. they found that after scrubbing the chamber clean they could swap over and have no problem. Hope this helps.

The only problems I've had with semiauto 22s were gun related, and not ammunition related.

First, here's a great read for any Walther P22 owner. It's a pdf called the Walter P22 Bible.

A buddy of mine has one and we've found it doesn't like the "hollow" point 22lr rounds. We switched it to CCI Blazer rounds and haven't had an issue since.
Hope it helps!

All 22's are different! All of mine like a different type of ammo best!

Like some here I have never heard about FMJ or JHP 22 LR ammo. What CCI 22 are you trying to shoot? Are these Mini-Mags, Target stuff, shorts, standard velocity? What's on the box? Some semi-autos are VERY picky about what works and doesn't work. Perhaps a little more info? My experience with CCI Mini-Mags is that they work through anything I put them in.

My P22 eats anything as long as it isn't a hollow point.

Ok Ok for the one's that want to be picky about it.

The CCI's are .22lr, copper plated round nose, 1215 fps, 29 gr.

The Federals are .22lr, copper plated hollow point, 1260 fps, 36 gr.

Savage said they use Federal Gold, 40 gr.

Like I said both seem to do better with the Federal 36 grain. Maybe they will do better with a heavier bullet?

I know the P22 don't like to shoot at all without a fresh cleaning. As for the "P22 bible" I have done most everything in it and does perform better than it did.

The reason I asked about what specific CCI ammo you were shooting is they make several different loads in 22. I looked up your copper plated 29 gr. 22lr on CCI's web site and didn't find it. I did find a 22 long not long rifle listed. 22 long will not cycle a semi-auto reliably. The 22 long has the same case length as the long rifle but the lighter bullet will not produce enough back thrust to overcome the weight of semi-auto slide and spring.

My suggestion at this point is try to find some CCI Mini Mags. These are 36 (HP) or 40 (RN) bullets in, generally, hundred round boxes and will operate all of my semi-autos. These may be VERY hard to find so I wish you good luck.

My S&W mod 41 loves CCI Standard Velocity. My friend's Ruger Mark II is the same. On the S&W section of Rim Fire Central Forum, virtually everyone with a 41 loves it. My mod 617 and mod 17 revolvers do well with it as well. If you want speed and more power, then try different high velocity ammo.

What's wrong with our 22s today? I have two Hi Standard Supermatics, the kind with the muzzle brake holes on either side of the front sight, and I have a much beloved Smith 41. The Hi Standards date from the 1950s, the Smith from the early 1960s. All three will function with almost anythign I put in the magazine. There are differences in accuracy, but not in function. We seem to have lost a lot of that with our current run of 22 semiauto rifles and pistols.

Do they cycle with longs or shorts? Do you use long rifle only? Most 22 autos will shoot any 22 long rifle that are obtainable in this country but not longs or shorts. My belief is that the OP was feeding his CCI 22 Longs not Long Rifle by mistake. That would cause his problem.

My Savage 64 loves CCI and Federal. It does fine on most anything else with the exception of Remington thunderbolts. They just plain suck.

You said something about having a death grip on it - that tells me you may be limp wristing the gun. If so it will affect the cycling of the slide and you won't eject properly.

My P-22 does best with CCI MiniMags. It's OK with the Federal bulk packs, but I've had a couple of FTFs with it, so it would be range use only. Which is fine, because besides my wife's CCW class, that's all it's ever been used for.

I think I'm with the folks who believe that the 29 grain bullets aren't big enough to properly cycle your semi-autos.

I'm going to say I'm not limp wristing. I don't have the problem with any other pistol I've had from my pocket .380- my .40 S&W. I'm talking about shooting right hand dominate and left hand hold the recoil back with a thumbs up grip.

I going with the bullet is to light, but thanks for the comment.

I have a cheapo S&W 22S I purchased in 1990.

Mine even talks, not much though, it says "Feed Me" all the time.
