Default No military discount

I just had a customer calling in asking if military personal would receive discounts on products. I knew we do not offer any kind of discounts at all as we have sales on a regular base. I checked for him but unfortunately I had to tell him that the company obviously does not care for US military.
I talked to our higher management about that, max profit was the answer...

Only one gun shop in my hood (out of 5) will give military and police discounts. Kinda' sad considering the several military bases I'm surrounded by are their bread and butter.

Question, do you have competitors and if so do they offer military discounts?

We rule the market with a profit of 2.4 billion dollars last year...

In that position, the management probably sees no need for discounts. Many business people make business decisions based on whether it is going to make them more money. Not unusual.

Seems the vast majority of our military would accept a discount if offered but would not ask for one. The Texas State Park I visited asked if I qualified for a military discount which I told her it was a great thing for them to do but all the fighting I had done was against fires and stupid stuff. Except for a tiny percentage the military men and women I have met and known were humble, honorable and trustworthy. I had many from all services under my command over the years and can personally vouch for the quality of our veterans.

True, but the world does not stop at those huge pileups of $. After all soldiers make it possible that we are able to open stores in countries which are not in the middle of a war

Are you kiddin'? I ALWAYS ask! Our local Turners gives 5% as does Home Depot.

Couple years ago I was renting a boat at our local "pay to play" fishing lake and whipped out my retired ID. Imagine my chagrin when I was informed I qualified for the Senior discount.

I've always had the thought that, if they are offering a discount, aren't their prices too high?

I don't care about "discounts, offers and percent off"... I just want to know the final price, and how does it compare with competitors. Service and how I'm treated really makes a difference too.

A discount for anything doesn't ever guarantee a good price.

How do you know they don't care for the military? Because they don't offer a discount, doesn't mean they do not. I don't think some of the largest retailers in the US give military/LE discounts, neither do grocery stores, gas stations, etc. I'm not getting on to you, but this is not a good argument, unless the management actually stated that they "don't care for the military."

I take it that the business is likely firearms/outdoor related?

If I was running a business, say a restauruant equipment repair business, and an employee told someone that I didn't care for the military because I don't offer discounts to military personel, I would be more than a bit preturbed.

The Honey Badger was very angry when given the Senior discount at a local eatery- she doesn't look her age, which may be just slightly over 50, she is very slender and attractive, runs and works out daily, so she was not appreciative. What could I say------. I am going to be 57, nobody ever offers me a discount, but I would just say thanks. Billy Magg

I still have to ask for my 5% senior citizen discount at the supermarket, which is on Thursdays, and then ask for my 10% discount for military retiree/active duty on Fridays. The new help always ask for my ID...must be the sushi.

I didn't enlist for discounts. I don't care if I get one. And it kind of irks me when I'm standing in line somewhere and someone asks for a military discount, then gets annoyed if one isn't offered.

On the other side of the coin, if a potential customer of mine didn't give me the job because I didn't offer a military discount (which I don't) I wouldn't be sorry to avoid dealing with such a customer.

Lowes and Home Depot give 10% to military retirees. I don't know for sure about active duty, but I think so. My son has 20 years in the Navy and never seems to remember to ask for it.

You could give a answer like "sorry I greatly appreciate your service even if my company doesn’t so we do not give military, fire, or P.D. discounts (and if no one can hear) but so and so does. Might not make a sale but maybe to them it’s worth shopping somewhere else. Not many places give discounts to them now and I guess you could get fired for it.

LEO/Military discounts are a nice gesture. FootLocker for example offers 20%! I love that, especially since we buy Air Jordan stuff. We also buy all our shoes there.

HD does active and reserve too. I very seldom if ever use or ask for it but when I did at Lowes recently they said they can only do discount for reservist on holidays like presidents day. I bought new carpet and decided to use it on the Sunday before Presidents Day and they made me come back for the discount. I was more than a little annoyed, it would have been better if they said they don't offer a discount.

As a matter of personal principle, to show your disapproval with your employers corporate policy of no discounts, simply put in your notice and make it clear why you can't work for such an evil corporation.

When I had my gun shop , I gave active duty ENLISTED 10% off. When cops came in , they always asked if I gave LEOs a discount. I replied, "Are you gonna give me a discount on my next ticket?"

The problem I see with giving a LE discount, especially around here, is that most of their customers are cops of some type. I'm not a business man by any means but giving the majority of your customers a discount can't be a smart practice. I would say the same applies to gun stores near military bases.

I am appreciative of Business who offer Vet. discounts. I don't know anybody who signed up for them. Still, a kindness on their part out of respect, is welcome.

I have a general rule about buying stuff, if the price is not acceptable I will not buy. If I'm told I'm getting a discount and I know where I can buy it cheaper, I'll buy at the place where it is cheaper; all things else equal.

I have never asked for a military discount. Never will. Especially at a small business. It's hard enough these days.

I work for a small company. We used to offer certain discounts but stopped due to the economy.

If someone asked for a discount and they were legit, I would give them one.

When I signed up at my current bank, the banker saw my Air Force hat and asked if I was a veteran. I said yes. He said we can sign you up on the super duper checking account with no fees and no minimums!! So I said yes!

It's enough for me if someone shakes my hand and thanks me for my service.

We have a policy at our department that we don't allow our officers to ask for discounts. I have terminated deputies for doing so, we call it badge flashing and we take it very seriously. We appreciate those businesses which exhibit the courtesy of offering discounts, but we don't ask for 'em. It is, after all, a courtesy of the business and we do not believe as a courtesy it should be insisted upon.

It can be a fine line to walk. If a deputy is at a local resturant and the cashier knows he's LE, whether on duty or off, and they give a reasonable discount to that deputy, we don't have a problem with it. For example, if a deputy goes to the local Wendy's and orders a #2 Menu Deal with Biggie fries and soft drink and it comes to $2.25, they should say "thank you". If on the next visit they order the same thing and it rings up to $7.89, they should say "thank you" again. Better not be pointing to the badge and say, "hey, where's my discount?"

I work gun shows every weekend selling holsters.
I have a sign on my table thanking the men and women
who have served our country for their service.
If asked if I offer a military discount, I say I do.
If they didn't do what they do, I wouldn't be able to
do what I do. I am always grateful for their service
and proud to support them financially as well.
I am a small business, but fortunately I am able
to afford to. After all, what is the price of freedom?

God Bless Our Troops.

I gave him a hind that I was on his side, but I could not be to clear as all the calls are recorded and reviewed on a regular base... I think he did receive my message.
