Default I got blindsided in a Houston hotel room. (Ugly photo attached.)

On Friday afternoon my wife and I drove to Houston to attend a pre-wedding dinner party and the wedding of her niece on Saturday. Earlier I had booked a room at a nice hotel but as things go, we were running late and would miss our check-in time. I called the hotel and the person I spoke with assured me that they would hold the room for us.

It was after 10:30 p.m. when we arrived. We signed in, got our key cards and proceeded to the room.

I opened the door and we walked in. Surprise! There was a couple already in the bed. They both sprang up and the woman reached out and grabbed something off the nightstand, possibly a wine bottle or Coke bottle, and threw it. It happened so fast that I didn’t have time to react and the object struck me solidly in the eye.

I tried to apologize and explained that the hotel clerk had assigned the room and given us the key but all I got in return was a string of expletives and threats. I can understand them feeling that they were in danger so I expected the threats, and maybe even the cursing, but hurling an object is something I didn’t expect. The hotel rooms have an interior lock; I wish these folks had used it.

By the time we reached the lobby my eye was throbbing and I was furious at the hotel. The clerk called the night manager who appeared out of a back room at the same time the man we had walked in on came storming from the elevator. The guy saw my wife and I standing at the front desk and began demanding that we be arrested for breaking into his room.

The manager was able to calm him down. He ushered my wife and I into his office and asked if I needed medical attention. He then went back out to talk to the other guest.

When the manager came back he apologized profusely, then personally escorted us to one of the hotel’s suites. The next morning room service delivered a very nice breakfast, courtesy of the hotel. I hope they were as gracious to the other couple.

The wedding went off perfectly except for my aching eye and a couple of nettlesome relatives wanting to know who won the fight. We had planned to spend Saturday night and Sunday in Galveston but decided to return home after the reception. My wife did the driving because vision in my right eye was slightly blurred. If it doesn’t improve by tomorrow, I will visit the eye doctor.

I thought that computer systems and key cards were supposed to keep things like this from happening but it seems the system is only as good as the person using it. I will be returning to this same hotel in May for the NRA Convention. This time I will knock, loudly, and announce my presence before entering the room.

Not being smart.

I would think you were lucky that is all you ended up with, no fault of yours, but I think I would be a bit out of control speaking to the management of that hotel.

Glad you are semi-OK. Hope your vision gets better soon.
You are a very understanding person. What a surprise,
for both couples i'm sure. Hope i would have the patience
and ability to handle a similar situation the way you did.
Like Labworm said, Could've been a lot uglier had previous
couple been armed.

Sorry to laugh, but dang man! I gotta ask, was the couple in the middle of something?

Hopefully the wedding went off better.

Thank God he only had a bottle and not a gun.

There was a case last year north of here where a guy shot his own son to death in a hotel room, mistaking him for an intruder.
Glad all you got was a bottle.
Here's hoping your eye heals 100%, and I wouldn't be bashful about demanding the hotel pay for any ensuing treatment your eye requires.

Time for a sit down with Lowell "The Hammer" Stanley if you ask me. How do you feel about being the proprietor of a hotel?

Hope you are OK.
Bad situation all around, through no fault of your own or the other couple.

I probably would have thrown whatever I could have gotten my hands on until I could have accessed a handgun. Think about it . . . . door opens unexpectedly, and someone starts toward you . . . how would you react?

You and your wife, as well as the other couple, are very lucky. You could have gotten hurt much worse, and they could have the burden of knowing they badly hurt an innocent.

The hotel should consider providing free accommodations for you for the NRA Convention.

One of the reasons why I travel with one of these when driving and staying at a hotel/motel. I get the occasional odd look but who cares?

I hope you sought medical attention. The eye is awfully close to the brain to let the possibility of a clot to go undiagnosed.

There are couple of nice hotels in Houston that recently had their card key systems hacked. The locks are used worldwide, but the hack started in Houston. From what I've read the break ins were simple burglaries while the occupant was out of the room. I hang out at technology sites too, and the hotels are about two miles from my home. The lock manufacturer is trying to upgrade the systems, but who pays for the fix is a big issue. Do not depend on a card key lock in your hotel room. If a internal hasp lock is there, use it. I hope your stay at the hotel was at no charge and they offered a complementary free weekend in the future. Somehow, I seriously doubt that happened.

I have had that happen more than once. Several years ago I was at a shooting school in Ohio when I opened a room and there was someone already there. I was given another room, but the next morning the manager told me that I was mistaken as there was no one in the room. He even took me down to show me. I still feel that someone somehow broke into the room and spent the night there.

I once checked into a room in the afternoon, used the restroom and left to do some work. Came back in that evening with my stuff to find someone else in the room. Since he had possession, I had to drag everyrthing back downstairs to get a different room. I was not happy.

Yep. Had it happen to me 2months ago. I caught it though because the person already in the room had the windows open and was sitting in a chair next to the window. I just turned around went back to the front desk and said I did not want to sleep with another man. She looked at me strange and after a pregnant pause the light went off. Huge apology new room key. I guess...it happens.

Something similar happened to me a few years ago. I had booked a suite for my buddies bachelor party. My car load was the first of 12 people to arrive to the room. After settling in and getting the drinks going, I noticed an odd suitcase. It had black and white polka dots. I shouted "who was the pansy that brought a woman's suitcase?".

After a couple of minutes, we knew the hotel double booked the room. I demanded a new room at a lower rate and our long night of shenanigans continued. After reading your story, I immediately thought of my situation. I'm thankful nothing happened. That situation could've played out in so many different ways if we had walked in with another group of ppl in the room.

One final note, before we discovered the suitcase, one of the guys had to take out some waste in the rooms facilities and took a shower. I think he left thr used towel on the ground. As a parting gift, I left a red solo cup filled with an adult beverage on the coffee table in the suites lounge room. How I wish I were a fly on the wall when the other guests walked back into the room.

Wow, that sucks. When we stay anywhere the door is fully locked when we're in the room and my gun is on the desk or night stand, someone comes through the door they're getting more than a bottle in the eye. You're lucky you're okay.

Gotta say, though, that woman has a heck of an arm, clearly she knows how to throw the heat. Accurate, too.

If you fail to set the extra locks on the door and end up shooting someone who was double booked in your room by the hotel, your going to have a hard time living with it.

My advice is always set the locks.

I'm not a guy that would normally suggest this but: Get a lawyer. It's for sure you have a valid lawsuit against the hotel. I'm sure you'll be just fine but you never know. A donk in the head like that might be costly and troublesome to you for a long time. If it were just embarrassment and not involve a personal injury I'd just laugh it off. You might save somebody's life in a future double booking instance.

I hope you are going to be OK.

Same thing happened to me a few years back. I flew into a little airport on Long Island and checked into the Marriot Courtyard. I was kicked back with my feet on the coffee table when I heard the lock on the door rattle. Before I could move or speak in walked an attractive young woman pulling her carry on. She got all the way into the room before seeing me. It scared her pretty badly. She began to apologize and headed for the door. I told her it was OK, "I thought you were part of the Marriot Rewards Program."

She got all the way into the room before seeing me. It scared her pretty badly. She began to apologize and headed for the door. I told her it was OK, "I thought you were part of the Marriot Rewards Program."
Should've asked her to stay!

Wow, good thing they didn't shoot you! That would have been a justified shooting! Even if you were a drunken college girl!

I've gone into rooms that had others in them already, but I've never had anyone come into my room. It does happen quite often I guess.

I always lock all the locks, then put my gun on the nightstand. If somebody comes in, they will have to make a lot of noise and use a lot of force to get through all the locks.

Did this kind of thing happen back in the day when hotel rooms had real keys?

Ouch! Hope you are okay!

I humbly suggest you (read...everyone!) get some basic defensive tactics (martial arts) training. One should have had sufficient time to react to a thrown object in this scenario.

We are all friends here and I'm not trying to be a know-it-all. BUT what if had been a real bad guy waiting to rob you?

An additional note is that I always use the safety lock from the inside. HOWEVER, I married a good looking "dumb" blonde. If she had been the last one to use that lock.....well you know what I mean.

Here's hoping you heal fast! I appreciate you telling your story as we all can benefit from each others trials and tribulation life experiences!

Default I used to travel alot before I retired

Back in the early 80's, in a town in Eastern Canada, I had someone enter my hotel room about 11 pm. This was before card keys in that area. I later found out from one of the "natives", that any room key could open any room in that small hotel! Don't ask me why they did it that way.
Just two weeks ago, some fella tried to get into our hotel room in Virginia about midnight. I had the deadbolt and hasp locked engaged, so, although his key worked, he wasn't successful. I got up and opened the door and told him the room was occupied. He was very apologetic. I told him not to feel too bad. I knew it wasn't his fault. Some kind of front desk/computer/card key screw up. I think this happens more often now with card key systems.

Given what I have seen in our litigious society, I'm willing to wager that the other couple is suing the hotel.

I find it refreshing that you're not. People are fallible.
I might see a doctor about that eye and charge it to the hotel, though.

I see no reason to retain the services of an attorney......for now.

Did they offer to cover medical charges, both present and future? That would be my concern.

Also hope they comped the room for you.

Around twenty years ago, my wife and I and our five-year-old daughter drove to Hanging Rock State Park in North Carolina and booked a room in a lodge which had recently opened there. After taking a quick look at the room, we went out and hiked one of the park trails. Along the way, our daughter asked, "What if they give our room to somebody else?" We laughed and told her that that wouldn't happen.

When we returned, I unlocked the room door, opened it and immediately shut it again, having seen a naked man fling himself off of the bed and off of a naked woman. I yelled "Sorry!" and we went down for a word with the management.

We got profuse apologies and a free dinner. They had no more vacant rooms but said they would tell the other couple they'd have to find other accommodations. We said no, we'd just move on, and suggested they make an apology to that other couple.

We also suggested that their new motto should be, "Discover Romance at the _________ Lodge."

Default Update April 15

I spent time today at the eye doctor and he diagnosed a tiny hairline orbital fracture, sometimes called a blowout fracture. Fortunately it does not require surgery and should heal completely in a couple of weeks.

I appreciate all the advice and well wishes. At this point I do not plan on suing the hotel. They agreed to pay the medical bills and have acted honorably thus far. They did not charge us for the suite or anything else while we were there.

Wow! What a crock! At least you didn't barge in and tell them,"Fill Yer' Hand Pilgrim" Lucky encounter all the way around. I would be highly ticked off at the management and advise them of the problem from my point of view. They should comp everybody all they way around! I see from your last post they are doing the right thing. Good on them.

I think computers and less attentive clerks cause these issues.

My one good hotel story involves a guy trying to get in my room's window at a Houston motel.

I had only a S&W M-29 at hand, a 6.5-inch barrelled example with smooth rosewood grips, made about 1960. Beautiful gun, extremely accurate. I had taken it along because I wanted to show this gun to a friend in Houston.

I wondered how bad the blast would be if I had to fire that .44 Magnum indoors. It was loaded with Remington 240 grain softpoints.

I wanted to let the creep enter the window before challenging, so it'd be a good shooting, if need be. Might not let him in the room, but I wanted the window pried open and him in it.

This was about 2:00 or 3:00 AM, BTW.

About this time, a woman came along and started yelling at the man at the window. Turned out she was his wife and soon marched the drunk off to the right room.

I can see why a drunk might try the wrong room, but why the window? Of course, we had one drunk guy in the USAF that friends put into a shower, telling him that it was a phone booth. He kept trying to call the girl whose Dear John letter had caused him to drink.

Thankfully, my motel event ended well, and the couple on the other side of that window never knew how close the man had come to oblivion. And it sure saved me a lot of red tape, lawyer fees, and who knows what else. Not that I'd have shot unless feeling a real need, but the potential was there.

The last time I was in a motel room, I was where I couldn't take a gun along, so I relied on a Buck Model 105 knife for protection. It went in my luggage, of course, not with me on the plane. No alarms, thank goodness, but the knife was welcome company...just in case. Its five-inch blade was as large as I thought would pass muster if I had to claim it as a utility tool. And it didn't look too like a combat item, as my Gryphon M-30A-1 would or a Fallkniven NL-2. The NL-2 is too heavy to carry handily in luggage on planes, anyway, besides raising too many intrusive eyebrows in a luggage inspection. The Buck Model 105 is adequate for most needs, and looks relatively innocuous. And if it gets confiscated, it's fairly cheap to replace. Always keep image in mind when travelling with knives!

To see a really bad room experience, watch, "The Deep", based on Peter Benchely's book of that name. The heroine (played by Jacquie Bisset) was assaulted in her room, terrified, and marked with voodoo symbols!

1987 in Redding, California. I was up there on a case. A young lady came into my room, Apparently we both were given the same room. The first thing she saw was a man standing there with a gun on his hip. You should have seen her face. I'm laughing as I write this. I'll bet she still hasn't forgotten.

Kelly - glad you got your eye checked out and it does not sound to be major.

Hotels - the gal I work with had a similar thing happen last month in ST. Louis - they checked in, went to the room, and there was luggage in the occupied room..... desk said the room should of been empty... gave them an upgraded room at no aditional cost. She did have her two small children with her -- and kids want to work the key card and be the first in the room.

After reading your post --- I will now always knock before entering my own room, and the kids WON'T be allowed to work the lock or be first in. Sorry kids, it's for your own protection.

Sorry for the mistake - man, in Houston...can't believe you walked in on someone NOT from Texas. A real Texan would have filled you with holes - then cussed you out as he re-loaded!

I had the same thing happen back in the 1990s at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. I was staying in the on-base hotel for a night...and had a ladyfriend visiting. It was a dual occupancy room and I was only an E4. Soooo, of course a guy walks in after midnight in the middle of a "moment". He saw what was happening - apologized...and walked out. The moment was lost...but God, was it funny! Couldn't say anything to the front desk...it was dual occupancy...but glad they didn't add any more visitors that night!

Kelly, I'm so sorry for your experience and so glad that it worked out decently okay. Yours is a good reminder to knock on the door of any hotel room we've just been assigned - just to be sure.

I've got a similar story. And this is S&W related.

On my wedding night, the idiots at the front desk rented my room out to another wedding couple . . . after we were already in the room. My bride and I were . . . erm, celebrating our connubial bliss, when THE DOOR OPENED.

Fortunately, I had the chain thrown.

I was up, across the room with a shoulder in the door in a heatbeat, two guns (one of them a Model 60) pointing as I yelled, "GET AWAY FROM THE DOOR! I'LL SHOOT! OCCUPIED! GET THE #%^$ AWAY FROM THE DOOR!"

Silence.

I throw my shoulder at the door and re-throw the deadbolt. Look out through the peephole, and there stands a groom with his bride in his arms. Utterly stunned looks on their faces.

Unbelievable. I told them that they had been given the key to an already-occupied room, called down to the front desk and demanded to speak with a manager. None was there. The next morning, I raised a bit of Cain. Thank God I didn't kill anyone.

It could have been so much worse if a gun was on the night stand.

The hotel should pay all medical bills.

There is no way I would be in a hotel room and not lock the inside
lock. That's just common sense.

Hope you are OK soon and completley heal.
