Note: For background to this post, see the thread, training first-time gunowners Friday; good advice welcome -pg. 3 or 4 at this time]
Well, we had our first session Friday afternoon, and it went very well. The couple(friends of mine for a number of years) are in their late sixties, I believe; very intelligent and responsible. We spent nearly the entire afternoon reviewing safety, nomenclature, considerations in approaching the home defense issue, and so on. Never went shooting -that is scheduled this week. I nixed that idea after running it past you folks, and we wouldn't have had time anyway.
I was surprised to learn that the wife was the one who initiated and pushed the idea of taking responsibility for their defense. She's the gentlest, sweetest lady you'll ever run into, but obviously is a thinker also. The husband is now completely on board, and had oodles of questions(one reason it took so long -I'm not complaining about that, however). He is an engineer by training and was particularly fascinated by the workings of the gun and ammunition. They were obviously conscientious about practicing the safety rules -I handed them the guns and let them demonstrate, as some of you advised.
We plan a trip to my brother's rural property this week to do the shooting portion of the initial training. I told the husband what you folks had said about not using the indoor range we were initially considering, and he understood completely and accepted your judgment.
All this illustrates once again the utility of this forum in sharing vital information and advice. Thanks to all who responded to the earlier post, and I plan to give a range report after this week's session.
With gratitude,
Andy
