Default S&W 22 Masterpiece and the Armadillo affair.

Was on Vacation at our farm last week, went to the deer bedding area to look for sheds, no luck. My wife was behind me on ATV. I turned a corner and 3 Armadillos were digging in the edge of the wheat field. I bailed off and shot all 3. Nice work by the Masterpiece.

With apologies to Tuco, When it's time to ride, ride! When it's time to shoot, shoot!

The pics are on my wife's cell phone. I dropped her off at our daughters house so she can spend time with the new grand daughter. So when she gets home we will put a photo on for the disbelievers. :-)

The distance was about 15 yards.

Yes 22 LR can chip away at the armor. For the wheat destroying bandits it was, ah, the gunfight at the KO corral.

Be careful touching them. They can be infected with leprosy which can be transmitted to humans.

A .22 LR is more than enough on armadillo at 30 feet. I took two one night with my 10-22 while house sitting a couple of years back. They were tearing up the yard. Did not find the second one until the next day.

Not living in armadillo country, and having only driven thru it a few times, I have no knowledge of the cridders. But when I did see one he was dead on the side of the road, so I just assumed they were born that way.

Had a baby opossum living in my breezeway all winter. My lab grabbed it twice and it played dead. A few minutes of leaving it alone it walked away.
It found the molasses coated corn we feed the deer herd. I have so many deer coming out of the bottoms I can't count them. Big fat pregnant does that look like moose from the rear. We have a monster buck and this is his harem. Don't want to shoot him just yet let his monster genes spread.
Funny how the trails go from the bottoms to the upper part of the water shed.
I figure if this world ever ends I have a fresh supply of meat.

A .22 short from a rifle will completely traverse an armadillo.
Don't see as many around here as a few years back. Think I would give them a pass nowadays.

I hear what you are saying but they are listed as invasive species in many states.

Wanted Dead or not alive.

They dig for grubs worms etc, they can be rough on a wheat field like a hog, probably would eat game bird egss too but not sure.

Obviously he used the Armor Piercing Green Tip 22LR. BTW, don't let the ATF know about this stuff or there will be such a run on 22LR and shooting 50 BMG will cost less.

Always wanted to see one. No Armadillos running around in Pa.

Are they like possums with basically no defense skills or are they more like ground hogs and run fast for cover?

Will they bite you?

No, they won't bite you, lol. Their main defense is their claws, but these are used as an escape more than a fighting mechanism. We have out run them (pretty easy when we were younger) and grab their tail, then put one hand under their back to hold them aloft. Their bellies are soft and covered with wiry hair.
If retreating into their hole, if you could grab the tail, you could poke a stick at it's rear and it would back out. (Wouldn't you?)

model70hunter: I know they are a pain for folks, but I have grown soft in my old age. Maybe trying to atone for all the killing I did when younger.

Default Armadillo's and Quail Eggs

"In a UGA study conducted in north Florida and south Georgia from 1999-2001 using 24-hour infrared camera surveillance of quail nests, armadillos were found to be the No. 3 predator of quail eggs behind snakes and raccoons. Fire ants were the No. 4 predator of nests and behind them were possums, bobcats, cotton rats and coyotes. Snakes got about 44 percent of the nests that were raided, raccoons raided 22 percent and armadillos 20 percent."

Don't bet your life that a possum is defenseless.
Take that for a fact.

While I have never sought out information about armadillo bites, I would assume it is possible if one were cornered. Even rabbits and squirrels bite. Whether the bites spread leprosy I do not know, but isn't the leper treatment center in Hawaii?
