Default Paranoia Or Self Preservation?

I have read some threads on this forum where the OP posts a hint about a medical / mental issue they may or may not have in connection with not being allowed to purchase a firearm because of it. I suppose they are rightfully concerned about all the recent conjecture that guns will be denied to those that have one or mulitple of said conditions. I also used to post a few pictures of the guns I own especially when I wanted to share enthusiasm when I finally got a real gem. I believe strongly that this worldwide forum (and many other gun forums) are monitored by "prying eyes" and would never for any reason divulge any personal medical information about myself or anyone else. I have aslo stopped posting pictures of any of my firearms unless of course I have one I wish to sell. Am I thinking too deeply into all this hoopla about gun control and being overly cautious?

I don't think you can be too cautious as we have just begun to see the reach of our government...

All those gun pictures I posted... Sadly those guns were lost in a terrible boating accident on Lake Superior...

I will refrain from expressing my opinion of anyone who is naive enough to think any of these forums are not under constant surveillance. They are able to read our email, listen to our phone conversations and have unlimited access to all of our records. Do I think there are people assigned to watch me? No. But if something I express publicly triggers something in a machine somewhere, then it will be a different matter. IMO this is not paranoia, just being aware. This isn't the same good old USA we grew up in...Norman Rockwell is out and George Orwell is in.

To be completely serious, The photos of firearms I have posted have all been sold.

I think it's kind of dumb for people to take photos of their collections and post them on the internet. I can't remember how many times I have seen photos of "all my gunz!" laid out on the floor, or a bed, for everyone to see. It's stupid.

And yes, you're paranoid.

I don't think that anyone, such as the OP, would be considered part of the "Black helicopter" crowd. I'll tell you what's going to happen, folks with any mental health issues, however slight, and who wish to continue enjoying their 2A rights, are going to forgo seeking any help, much to the detriment of the individual. It happened in the military...admitting to a mental health crisis was a career ender, and many kept it to themselves, and unfortunately, many left the reservation after multiple combat tours, killed wives and loved ones...just went ballistic. The military now insures these folks career's will not be over if they seek help; I don't believe them though.

Without stepping on this thread, I completely agree with the previous poster. The other day I learned that a young man that I worked with had been fired. I retired a year ago and when I stepped down from a union position he stepped up from a grievance steward to take my place, I had given him as much training as possible in the two previous years. This came as a real suprise to me, both of his parents were involved politically in union office and this must have been hard on them as well, he had a great future ahead of him.
This young man had served two tours in Iraq with the Marine Corp. He came back with a mechanical skill and with the help of his parents and others got his foot in the door at the company and worked his way up to 2nd class mechanic, he had a gift. His parents got him involved with union business and although we butted heads from time to time he and I developed a good understanding of how things take time and you have to understand managements requirments and that your main responsibility is to defend the contract and workers rights. He developed a pretty serious drinking problem, totalled a car a couple of years ago and luckily walked away from it although receiving a serious head injury.
Apparantly he showed up at work drunk the other night, they hauled him off for a sobriety test and he flunked, which is grounds for termination. He told his parents that he just got tired of all the b.s. at work and resigned...thats the story they believe. I was told by one of the supervisors that he was observed by a foreman and supervisor and taken in on legal grounds for "reasonable suspicion", failed the breathalizer, got belligerent with the staff and stormed out. Turned in his resignation in lieu of termination and thats about it. His dad seems to think he has had reoccuring bouts of PTSD, won't listen to anybody being in complete denial. I mentioned getting help through the American Legion, they were extremely helpful to me. I tried in the past to talk to him having a drinking problem myself, but he is a young man and I know when I was his age I couldn't be helped until I was ready to help myself. This may be a turning point for him but I fear only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all the other returning troops as they begin coming home.

I agree with some of the above. I don't think you can be too careful these day. Perhaps in days gone by we didn't have to worry about an oppressive government trying to deprive us of our rights. But now that we have a government that is openly, flagrantly and aggressively trying to reinvent the constitution and do away with the bill of rights, it would take a total fool not to have some caution and awareness of the dangers.

As far as posting pics I'm not overly worried about that. I have posted pics of all of them here and there and done is done and can't be undone. But all my guns are "on the record" and registered so I'm not sure what added risk there is for me to have their pics floatin' around in cyber space.

As far as actual paranoia is concerned I'm not sure I know where the line is on that. At what point is it justified concern and when does it get to be unreasonable. I don't worry about it too much. I just stop now and then and focus on what I'm doing and spend some time thinking about what I need to do and not let myself get carried away.

I once heard a person say, "Even paranoids have real enemies." Aside from the obvious humor there it also contains a certain amount of truth.

I'm not a prepper. I have some "stuff" laid by and I have a couple of versions of a SHTF plan rolling around in my head, I guess you might say I'm about a medium when it comes to all that.

The bottom line is, I think, don't worry. It doesn't do any good and distracts you from clear thinking and good judgement. Instead, focus on making what plans are appropriate and can be made and keep your eyes and ears open. Try to stay a step ahead of the problem if possible.

New York is already starting to pick up guns and revoke permits. Do a websearch and you'll find news stories. Right now I'm watching the talking heads discussing the fact that the IRS says they don't need any warrants to read your e-mail, texts, etc. Drones that can distinguish whether or not someone is armed are being tested right here in Oklahoma. Doctors are asking whether or not you own firearms. Educators are asking if Mommy or Daddy have guns.

I don't think it's paranoia. I'm pretty sure they really are out to get us.

I pretty new to this forum.

But I'm amazed at the number of boating accidents other S&W Forum members are having.

Perhaps we all need a course in safe handling of water craft.

This reminds me of a old boy bragging about catching many fish over the limit. Another guy overheard him and said, you know who I am? I am the game warden! The old boy says, you know who I am? I am the biggest liar in the county!
I am guilty as the worst here. But then, I have never broke any important laws, have nothing to hide and at 72 have lived my life. On top of that I am definetly not politicaly correct.
I do catch it though from my wife as she is very secretive and I am the opposite. Thats strange too as I spent 35 years as a security guard.
Probley if I was a lot younger and starting over I would be more carefull. Thats because I belive you younger people WILL see some of this come to pass but I dont think it will affect me to where I care in my ripe old age. I still fight for the 2nd though, not so much for me personaly but for the younger that is in jepordy.

Once upon a time there were folks who steamed envelops open to read other peoples mail. It was not common. Times have changed. Now it is no big deal for someone to hack into another persons e-mail, etc. Unlike earlier times, it is very common. A reasonable man will use wisdom in what they write/state in a public forum. To do otherwise is unreasonable.
