Default Seven year old dryer stopped working

Alright folks, looks like I have another project to do. As some of you know from another thread our 8 year old washer was acting up, and is now fixed. Just this morning while reading I hear a thud and the dryer stops running. The clothes are warm but wet. The dryer motor runs when I touch the start switch, but when I remove my finger from the switch the dryer shuts off. The drum rotates easier than normal but is still in place. I think the dryer has lost its belt. I am no washer/dryer tech so I am only guessing. I fixed the washer via some Google searching and FaceTube videos (Top Gear UK fans will get the reference) the washer lives again.

What gives here? Whats that moon like? You and I are both in the barrel! A week ago our old washer went out, just like that other thread. I bit the bullet for $994s counting extended warrenty and it was delivered yesterday. Now my wife let me know what she wants for her next brithday, a matching dryer! I hope our ancent one holds up for at least another 9 months!

Sir,

I think you'll be pleased to learn that dryers are less complex than washers. It sounds to me like your belt broke. Just remove the front of the housing and check it. Installation isn't difficult; intuitive, I would say.

Regards,
Andy

P.S. If it isn't the belt stop back and someone will help.

I do not have money for new machines, so I gotta repair what I have. The washer was a $28 fix from getting the parts online. If the dryer is just the belt....then it is a $12 fix. What I wanna know and do not know yet is did the belt break with age or did something else go wrong causing the belt to fail?

Hey, my dryer went out about a 2 months ago. It was a simple fix, basically it was a fuse to the motor that goes if the motor starts to get to hot.

A friend of a friend repairs appliances on the side and he came over and showed me how to do all the work. He told me it could be as much as $150 or as little as $5. It only cost me $26.

One of the questions he asked is if I heard a thud like sound, I said no and asked why he said that would most likely be a broken belt.

Word of advice when your dryer is taken apart go ahead and clean it really good, it will give you a chance to clean the lint trap area from the inside.

Hope all that helped good luck. Hope its simple.

As Rintimtin said, clean it out, a good shop vac is a help here. Check the rear drum bearing and if it appears worn, now is the time to replace it. Check over the idler pulley. If it is binding or sloppy, replace that. Yes, belts age, crack and break from age.

I bought our current dryer - a Whirlpool in Harvest Gold - back before I was married in 1975 and it's still running fine - somewhere along the line I replaced the rollers and belt but that's it. Nothing fancy about it - no sensors or anything - just cooks the clothes until they are dry.

Now I've gone and done it - I have just put the kibosh this great 38 year old run

Give this sight a try. It's helped me in the past. It's all appliances not just refrigeration.

My appliance guru buddy says; at 7 years your dryer will need some sort of service. Sounds like a belt, so pretty easy/cheap fix. But as stated, absolutely tear that puppy down and clean the snot out of it and check the wear items!

Ha, loutent, I too, have a Whirlpool Harvest Gold dryer. It was my grandmother's before I got it in 1978, and I think she had it quite a while. I've put a couple of belts on it, but that's about all I can remember. Mine's electric. It's sure been a good one.

The dryer is fixed and working now. I cleaned it out while in there as well. The work was not hard, there was just a lot of it. It was the belt so $15 and my time is all I am in the dryer. It sure saved me a lot of money.

They don't make them like that anymore - I remember when I bought it the salesman said that whatever dryer you buy - be sure it has a lint removal screen on top - the key to dryer life is lint removal - keep the air moving - I think that he might be right.

Of course at this point, my electric meter might be turning as fast as the dryer drum but I think I'm still ahead of the game.
