Default How much would you pay for a souvenoir of the Osama raid?

A Navy SEAL is auctioning off an authenticated knife carried on the Osama raid. The auction ends today at 8:00 PM EDT. The bidding is currently at $10,400 so the price will separate the men from the boys. I won't post a link but the auction is on 24 fundraiser. The winner will also receive a letter of authenticity from Mark Owen.

It might be his knife.

I wouldnt pay much if anything. This is not to disrespect the owner, i just dont see value in it.

How much would you pay for the shoe laces that were on the boots that were used in the Osama raid? Socks? Shirt? ....you get the point. And this isnt even counting the fact that he could have more then one and selling the one that wasnt there......although unlikely

Is the money going to charity?

Okay I found it and it is now up to $15,400 with next bid required being over 20K. It was his personal knife and was given to him by Ernest Emerson.

The bid is over $20,000. Here is what he says about the knife.

For all the knife collectors out there. There may be many pocket knives, but this one is truly unique--and it can be yours.

The knife, created by Ernest Emerson of Emerson Knives (Emerson Knives) personally gave Mark Owen this knife prior to the bin Laden mission and will award the winner of this knife with a letter of prominence. "That is the real deal -- Owen is the real guy and this is the real knife," says Ernest Emerson. The winner will also receive a letter of authenticity from Mark Owen.

This Emerson knife was carried by "Mark Owen" on the Raid to Capture or Kill OBL. Mark owned this knife for over 8 years and carried it on a variety of combat missions. It's still in great condition and just as effective as the day it was made.
“I'm donating the knife because the owner of Combat Flip flops is a friend and when he told me about this auction and all the good that the money raised was going to go towards, I wanted to help in anyway that I could. Giving back to our community is very important to me and if donating this knife to charity helps with that process then I'm more than happy to do it!”

Its worth nothing to me. I wouldn't pay anything for an object that was used by or is somehow related to an infamous dead person or group. Which is why I avoid the Nazi memorabilia threads.

I would give a lot of money for a real proof that they caught him because it is major BS hunting a guy for 10 years and then just throw his body of a ship in respect of his religion...

Tell me a different story

I hate that I'm so cynical, but I have large doubts about this. If it's really for a very good cause, maybe. But letters of "prominence" (I assume he meant "provenance") are easily faked, and since "Mark Owen" isn't the guy's real name anyway...well, I think not.

Gee, I'm getting even meaner and nastier than I was in my old age.

Nothing new really.
This type of a thing has been going on after wars, shoot outs, etc for a long time. It's just that we have better means of advertisment/communication these days.

I'm certainly interested in learning which knives were carried and are routinely used by special ops people.
This is a valid historical tem if it's what's claimed. I'm sure that it'll sell for a lot of money.

I wonder which knife is replacing it. Maybe Emerson gave him another. He's certainly getting enormous publicity from it.

The only SEAL-like knife I own is a SOG SEAL 2000, which passed gruelinbg Navy trials prior to adoption. I was particularly impressed with the point strength test.

Several Fallkniven knives have also passed severe US and Swedish military trials, and if I was in special ops today, I'd probably carry a Fallkniven A-1. Maybe a Randall Model 14. Not that Randalls haven't seen just a little use among these men...

Used in what way?

As extra weight? Or actually used in the Osama raid?

In either case, not $20k.

Just another dead terrorist, I see nothing special about anything to do with how he died. Hopefully if the cause is good some person with way to much money to blow empties his bank account for it.

The value here is in the Seal team member and the missions he's been on and not the killing of Osama. Celebrate the man and not the monster.

One thing that gets me is that this knife was given to the Seal by Emerson, well that will teach him to just give stuff away like that. Apparently this guy selling the knife has decided to put a price on sentimental value on whatever the auction ends at. I'm sorry I have been given things that I know are valuable and I intend to give them away when I get old enough, lose what few marbles I have left or trade an above ground bed for a below ground box. I would not give any money to someone willing to try and make money on their name and actions like that.

Back in the day, how many of Pancho Villa's SAA revolvers were sold to tourists in Juarez, I wonder?

The knife was donated for charity, so I don't see a motive to lie about whether or not it was on the raid. The knife sold for $35,400.

If the guy was selling the knife and putting the money into his pocket that's one thing but from what I've read all proceeds go to service related charities. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. All the poser to them-I see where they raised north of 70k on various items. I would think that Emerson would be proud of the guy giving up his knife for this cause and tickled to death at the free advertising.

Hell, if I had the money and opportunity there is lots of memorabilia I would love to own and if I could get it with the money going to charity so much the better.
How many of you here is given the opportunity and funds wouldn't love to own, say Jack Ruby's .38 that he shot Oswald with? Or for that matter what about Poo Poo Boudreaux's little finger that they got out of the alligator's stomach?

Fallkniven?
Here's one that was carried on a super secret squirrel mission.
(I can't tell you about it, but it involved Angela Jolies toenails)

It's just a knife that was used on a raid. They do this every day and all of the raids are important. What next...the socks used by a prison guard that took Timothy McVeigh on his final walk. But then someone will buy it and put it in the safe with all his rest of his stuff so his grand kids can sell it to buy designer shoes... Mind you I am saving the gum I bought that was found under a seat that Elvis walked by...or so I was told on ebay...

I confess that I would like to own this knife. I am not in a position to pay $25,000 for a knife (or a gun). To my way of thinking the Osama raid is a much bigger deal than Timothy McVeigh. Certainly the rifle that killed Osama BinLaden is priceless. Regarding souvenirs of that raid, anything is going to have some value, but a wallet or handkerchief would be worth much less. Also, if I was aware that the Seals were selling all the stuff from the raid it might make a difference. You not only get the knife, you get a letter from the SEAL that carried it.

I have a 1903 Colt that is marked "US Property". It was shipped to the OSS in 1944. If I could link it to a General Officer the value would probably be at least double (possibly a lot more depending upon the general).

I'd buy an Osama latex death mask for a hood ornament or grill decoration.

That'd be a great halloween mask, I heard he had most of his face blown away.

I would rather have the knife my uncle carried when he jumped into Normandy on D-Day.

Buyer beware! Maybe this is legit.....maybe not. As for me, I have my own fish to fry. Besides, I'd rather have a BUNCH of 'Smiths for that kind of money......
