Does anyone remember the original back pack, U.S. Army?
Has anyone seen a U.S. Army back pack lately? You might remember them as a universal book bag for middle schoolers. Shoulder width size, 2 strap tie down, 2 shoulder straps. Drab green. Those were so useful to us as kids, we just took them for granted. I'd love to see one today, even better, own one. Are they still available? Does any one have a Pic? Thanks to All

If you're talking about the ALICE Medium pack, you should be able to find them all over. You can get real surplus one for cheap, or get new imported ones for not much more.
Google ALICE Medium pack.

Given the price of backpacks from Wallyworld, I have every intention of buying my son a M-1936 for school. I can tell you I had one for some of my stuff (don't know what became of it) but I know they last a lot longer than the plastic and cheap junk they are putting out now.

I believe he means the Korean War vintage M1945 battle pack.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-w...1945+front.jpg
The hook-holes in the center of the top flap are for the entrenching tool. The loop directly below them, at the bottom of the pack, is to hold the E-tool's handle. A similar setup is on the left side. Double holes on a top at the top for the bayonet, with a loop down at the bottom to hold the sheath.
I used to have one of them. Used it when riding my bike to junior high. BUUUUT, I left it in the truck, on the floorboards, as a "get home bag" kinda thing. Sun coming through the window killed it. I picked it up one day and it tore in two. Canvas was sunrotted.

After I posted this I was looking at the local Craigslist and look what I ran across http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/spo/3783508356.html (A WWII pack, or a fake, I don't know but the timing is spooky)
And another(not a pack but a bedroll case - never heard of such a thing), this must be military collectors day on CL http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/spo/3795996257.html

I think the one you are remembering was called a Musset (? sp) bag. Heavy canvas, two adj. back straps that could detach on the base and clip together to make cross body carry (but the clips would dig into your shoulder). Just the right size a HS book bag, or a boy scout day pack. I bought one at an army surplus store in the early 50's and used it until I donated it with all the rest of my scout camping stuff to a cousin when I enlisted in the USAF.

I believe the musette bag is (or is very close to) the one depicted in photo provided by Biginge, but may be a bit more modern than the original musette. Should be some experts on here that know more.
