Crazy or Good Idea?
I have a theory and thought I would throw this out for discussion to see if I am crazy or if I might have come up with a good idea.
I am new to shooting hand guns but am able to get pretty good groupings as a new shooter (about 1 1/2 inches with M&P 22LR at 3 yards, 3 inches at 7 yards with M&P .9mm, .40 and .45. Nice to have a one price shoots all gun library at the range.)
Here is my idea: I was thinking that training with the .22LR so that the muscle memory is really set firmly might prevent the bad habit of anticipating the recoil on larger caliber weapons (Which I noticed that I had begun to do shooting the .9mm, .40 and .45).
Am I crazy or would this actually help avoid some bad habits?

Most of us old shooters told everybody to start with a .22 LR.

Yes,it does help.Dry firing a center fire while aiming at a target and focusing on follow through helps too.

Welcome to the forum Papa.
Your idea is sound but not very new unfortunately. It has been around for about 100 years and is how pretty much all of us started out. New shooters are welcome here-hell, all shooters are welcome here.
Collectively we are ornery, crusty and quite opinionated. We like giving each other grief. Try not to get intimidated
Now go home and get your ******* shine box

You're crazy if you sell that sweet 15-3 snubby. You're idea about shootin' a .22LR for practice does make a lot of sense. That and plenty of dry fire practice.

I started working on that muscle memory at an early age.

One thing I have been doing forever is I call the shot after I shoot. That is, I will say (to myself) I pulled it to the right, left, etc. Having a good spotting scope helps a lot.
The cure for anticipation is to shoot quite a bit (IMO). Shoot the low recoil .22LR first.

I started doing something similar last time I was at the range. I found this chart to that helped determine what you were doing wrong based on where the bullet struck the target. I found that most of my problem was too little trigger finger or tightening of fingers. When I hesitated I noticed that I was breaking my wrist down slightly. Once I realized that I could consciously correct it.
This is fun stuff. I should have taken this hobby up years ago!

You're crazy if you think it's a new idea!
Just remember that due to recoil, re-acquiring the target will be much different with other calibers than with a .22. The muscle memory MIGHT help with anticipation of the first shot, but the resulting motion / force of the shot won't be familiar. The best way to get over any anticipation is to practice with the round you have issues with.
I personally don't train with a .22 to help me with my other calibers.

I'm the same. Only started maybe 5 months ago. Not even because of the shootings and proposed legislation or whatnot. I was just in the store and made an impulse buy since I had been without a job so long and finally had one and was making money. I try to do what you're proposing, and for the most part I see my accuracy improving due to this, but the recoil on a .40 is still hard for me to control. a 9mm? no problem really (well I have noticed a difference from my father's kel tec pf9 to my sd9ve since it's smaller and harder to control).
