What states have the most legal full-auto firearms?
The answers may surprise you. I stumbled on this interactive chart which displays a map. Put your cursor over the state you are interested in, and it will display the number of registered NFA firearms in that state. Some of the states you would never guess have a high count - do. And some of the states you would guess have a large number - don't. Check this out:
NFA Machine Gun Registration in the United States

Is this the number of guns or the number of gun owners?

Total number of registered machine guns per state, not owners.

Seems to coincide with the general population. Most populous states have the most licensed full-auto owners. I find that encouraging as it seems to indicate that even in the states with restrictive gun rights the percentage of full-auto enthusiasts is a constant.

It would be interesting to see what the per capita ownership is.

Good observation....but in reality I would bet the per capita #'s would track closely with the general population #'s per state.

California, Texas and New York probably have the densest populations. However, the state with the most full autos is:
Virginia!

If the comments that accompany the chart are correct, this includes law enforcement and maybe even manufacturer-owned weapons. Don't know if that is the case or not.

I"m fairly certain that those 21000 machine guns in California are not in "private hands" but belong to movie studios.

I was surprise at the number from California. I'd have thought it would have the fewest.

Tiny CT has over 20,000 and IL has over 15,000. I am guessing a lot of these are in the hands of law enforcement.
Hmmmm, maybe i ought to try and help NC beat TN.

A lot of those MGs in CA is from the movie industry. Probably the same with NY.
I seen a show about this a few years back. One guy in Cali owns a business that supplies most of the Gov vehicles for the movies. Police, ambulances, fire trucks...He also has a warehouse full of weapons with many duplicates and none firing replicas

It certainly doesn't hurt that there are some major manufacturers there either!
Colt, Remington, Springfield ect...

I bet a lot of the MD and VA guns are owned by security companies.

All of the full auto weapons in NY belong to the security details guarding the anti-gun, progressive state and federal elected officials.

I'm pretty sure its the same in CA. Only the "privileged" and Hollywood can get NFA things here. I do know of a few dealers, but they're for LEO only.
I wish I could get some mufflers for my rifles

Looks to me like Connecticut has more than it's share. 20 years ago it was illegal there to wear a gun in your own yard.
