An interesting Finnish tradition
Caught this article today. It seems that since the 1930s the Finnish government has issued a box of essentials to all expectant mothers who want it. The sturdy box even doubles as a crib. This started when the new nation was struggling with a 6.5% infant mortality rate and has continued. Call it welfare if you wish, but it seems to have morphed into a useful tradition for the Finns.
BBC News - Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes
Check out the link in the article to the babies being left outside in freezing weather. Definitely different societies.

OMG
Does that mortality rate say 65 out of 1000???? We were in line to adopt a baby when one day a call came and said to go downtown to the hospital and bring a car baby seat, clothes and several other essentials. We were running around like crazy in 'Babies 'R' Us'. Not having a box or crib the baby slept in my underwear drawer that night. We could have used one of these boxes.

When you stop and think about it how many of us open a window when we go to bed at night even in the winter? I know I like fresh air when I sleep.
Hard to say how many times I've nodded off for a nap while sitting in a deer stand in freezing weather. Of course now that wasn't what I was supposed to be doing but when that sun peeks over the tree line early in the morning my old eyes tend to droop a little, just can't help it.
Have I ever missed a shot because of it? Well, yeah, more than once but I don't care I still enjoy the experience.

Back in the early 60s I worked in mighigans UP around hancock and holton. That is a heavy finnish area. Besides pastys they were big on those finnish saunas. I heard they would take them in winter, get sweated up, run out in the snow, roll around and switch each other with limbs. I even recall some radio programs in finnish.

Well, nothing like getting young families off to a socialized-state-subsidized start. But, they may be onto something ...
I note that among the included items in the package are, condoms...! These must be particularly precocious infants, to require condoms at such early ages! If there's anything to this post-natal government coddling of male infants, vis-a-vis cardboard cribs and etc., I might choose to divest my interests in big pharma plays of Viagra, Cialis, and etc., and put the proceeds back into box-board fiber and latex futures

You should see what it takes to get a driving licence there. The training is awesome. Even Germany is not as tough.

I thought I was the only one who did this. My hunting pards always wondered why I looked so well rested.
