Anybody here have a Yahoo e-mail account? Might want to re-think that.
Yahoo to Users: Let Us Read Your Emails or -- Goodbye!
"As of June 1, all Yahoo email users are required to upgrade to the company's newest platform, which allows Yahoo to scan and analyze every email they write or receive. According to Yahoo's help page, all users who make the transition agree to let the company perform "content scanning and analyzing of your communications content" to target ads, offer products, and perform "abuse protection."
"This means any message that Yahoo's algorithms find disturbing could flag a user as a bully, a threat, or worse. At the same time, Yahoo can now openly troll through email for personal information that it can share or hold onto indefinitely. Gay and haven't come out yet? Yahoo knows. Having an affair? Your spouse may not know — but Yahoo does. Any interests, ailments or projects you'd rather not share? You're sharing them with Yahoo, perhaps forever.
"The new tracking policy affects more than just Yahoo account holders. Everyone who corresponds with a Yahoo email account holder will also have their own message content scanned, analyzed, and stored by Yahoo, even if they themselves have not agreed to Yahoo's new terms of service.

I solved all of my Yahoo problems for myself in a very simple way:
Yahoo! Account Help | - SLN2044 - Closing your Yahoo! account
I closed my Yahoo account several months ago, and I haven't looked back.
It's also nice not to get 20 or 30 Spam e-mails every day anymore.

I don't think it is a question of content for most but a major overstep of their powers and a major trampling of your rights to privacy. It's a bad deal all around!

Yes, but people, like me who answer your E-mail might not want to be monitored.

It's my throw away account when you need an email address and don't want to use your good address. Everybody should have one.

Well, I have a couple of yahoo email addresses that are never used. They exist as part of a Yahoo account that I maintain so I can participate in several Yahoo discussion groups.
I haven't yet heard anything from Yahoo about accepting new rules or having my account closed. So far only a wannabe competitor who doesn't even have a real mail product yet is asserting the reality of that.
Thanks, but I'll panic later. There's nothing to see here right now, and I'm moving along.

I have to agree with Mr. Wilson. If it is "required by June 1", and here it is June 5, why hasn't Yahoo said anything to me about "having to change"?

Just write a letter on a piece of paper, put it in an envelope and mail it. Now, it might not get there, or it might be a week or two late... But hey, nobody sends anything important through the mail, right?

Well, I have read all of this post. I know I confuse easily but it worked!!
I have yahoo dot com and gmail dot com accounts. I have not received anything about Upgrades, etc.
What other FREE options are out there for me to use??
And, yes I really hate the 20 spam emails I get daily....and there is no way to stop them!! ChristianMingle dot com hits me up 3 or 4 times each day AND each one of them comes from a separate email account.........

Geez, every time I turn around, there's another cyber-snoop effort. This is getting monotonous. George Orwell knew and he told us about it. Did we pay attention? I think not.

I used to say that I don't have anything in my email that I'd be concerned about sharing...
HOWEVER... after seeing how the IRS used key "trigger words" in organizational naming to apply discriminatory practices. (Bad word like "patriot" set off alarm bells.)
Considering the political power of the IRS and the power that the IRS is scheduled to have in our lives (such as the enforcement arm for the new health care legislation)... it scares the peanuts out of me.
Maybe I need a tin foil hat, but I don't think so.

Growing up in Louisiana I take the "Uncle Earl" approach (Earl K. Long-Huey's brother)
"Don't write anything you can phone. Don't phone anything you can talk. Don't talk anything you can whisper. Don't whisper anything you can smile. Don't smile anything you can nod. Don't nod anything you can wink."
Uncle Earl was a man ahead of his time He once said "The people of Louisiana are gonna get good government one day-and they're not gonna like it."

Steganography would be an answer to any email scans But to the OP concern: gmail been doing that stuff since the very beginning, same as Facebook, Yahoo is just trying to catch up that's all.

I'll tell family and friends. I'll probably close the Yahoo account that I never really use.
Will also tell a couple about gmail.
Besides scanning your mail, they're probaby also noting which Searches you do and which pictures you look at.
Thanks, Fat Tom!

I have a yahoo and a gmail account. The reason that I keep them is that I have used them in the past to register software. I have switched all accounts that I can to the email account on my web server. I never send email from these accounts and I only get a couple of emails a day from them.
Even thought you change email addresses on some sites, they will still send you emails if you ever ordered from them using the old email address. I get the same email on multiple accounts.

Here's the game. Yahoo and Gmail provide the email accounts to you for no monthly fee, so they support it with ads. As we know from the pages on this forum, it's all about ad targetting, click-throughs and all the other metrics that the e-commerce folk use.
Yahoo feel they have the right to maximise these metrics by scanning your emails, sending you ads that you find relevant that you then click on earning them money. They probably feel they have this right because all the Yahoo mail users are just freeloaders and bandwidth overhead if they don't.
As ever, follow the money. If you don't like your emails being read by them as a matter of course then ditch their email service and use the one provided by your ISP. The only thing with that is that the headers from your ISP are usually a good clue as to your location, more information most of us here don't like to send out for free. Choose your poison.

I have been sent a couple of emails about the upgrade to Yahoo thru my att account. Got the final one today that states that on June 10th or soon after my account will be updated. I guess I need to do a little research on this. Will be reading posts about advise. Thanks for the heads up.

I don't know. It is kind of a minor issue. I really can't think of any reason I would be afraid to show Yahoo, FBI, CIA, or most of all my wife.

I am the same way. I would prefer they did not do monitoring, but there are emails that need to be monitored and I have nothing to be afraid of so I couldn't care less. I have had my yahoo email for a while and switching emails just wouldn't be easy.

I have one but I don't use their web site to access it - and only use it for cases where I have to enter an email and want to safely ignore any and all incoming. Set it up originally to do some testing for a customer with a yahoo account to make sure i was seeing what he was seeing.

I don't use Yahoo but I correspond with some folks who do. I don't put anything on the net that I don't want known so I shouldn't have anything to worry about. It's the same thing with forums that I'm on. I'm sure a lot of them are monitored and I don't mean by the moderators.

I suggest you read the TOS agreements that you normally scroll through to the end and check the box that says you have read, understand, and agree to them. Every e-mail account I have has similar notices buried in there somewhere. They may not, they do reserve the "right" to do so.
However, if you believe Rush, you can pay for a Reagan.com e-mail account which won't.

If I use a yahoo account which is free, I am subject to their rules
Just like here. I freely browse and post, yet I am subject to the sites rules
At work, my emails are periodically scanned. Their service, their rules.
The term "nothing is free" applies.
What email can we use to be safe?
I hear about Reagan.com email. You pay a yearly fee. How safe is it?
You have an offsite database to backup your pc files.....who sees that?
From what we see daily on the news here lately. Big Brother is all in our business. Anyone got a Verizon phone?
