Default Nasty shootout video

I checked this out and it actually happened.
Shooting took place in March. Middlefield, OH
Female officer lost her left index finger (had a month on that Dept). Male officer had slight injuries, and is back on the job. Bad guy fired 37 rounds from AK-47 and died at the scene.

The bad guy was pulled over for running a stop sign. He had another 8 mags for the AK with 40 rounds each, books, DVD's on improvised explosives, etc. He had no criminal record

I often wonder if news persons ever follow up on these stories and tell us what kind of firearm is was actually. It seams that Everything is an AK-47, which in fact is a machine gun. The news media and lots of law enforcement will use the incorrect term. Could it have really been a pre 1988 AK-47 worth thousands of dollars or just a look alike. The LEO's were very lucky and better yet we will not have to have a trial.

Bless those Men and Women who are willing to "protect and serve." Bless them and their loved ones. That video was chilling and should be a reminder to all why LEO's are not always in a "good" mood when making a simple traffic stop...bless those who walk that line every day.

Seemed to be a Hungarian AMD AK semi auto if you want to get technical. If he knew what he was doing instead of shooting from the hip there would be a lot more casualties

The person in the white car in the opposite lane threw it in reverse and high tailed out of there. Crazy video though.

My sentiments exactly.

Two days ago in a city nearby, a scumbag stabbed his ex-girlfriend/child's mother to death and also killed a male friend that tried to come to her aid (it was not a love triangle).

They later found the scumbag bleeding badly with self-inflicted injuries....
Yup, they administered first-aid and saved his life. Now, unless he makes a successful attempt at his own life again, he'll go up for double murder, (at least one count of pre-meditated murder) and the state of NY will take care of him for the rest of his life.

Maybe it's wrong, but I'd have let him bleed out.

Just proves once again that pray n' spray isn't the way to win a gunfight.

Another member already sent me this video. What amazed me is that the cop firing didn't keep at it until the perp dropped. He paused. I thought he was maybe going for a head shot and needed a moment to align his sights, but that wasn't the case.

Note that the offender remained functional after apparently taking several hits. Note, too, that the female officer opted out of firing finishing shots, choosing to call the station while the gunman was still capable of shooting, for all they knew.

My son sent me a video of a jihadist in Iraq who took a burst of 5.56mm and went down. Shot people seldom react as they do on TV.

Probably given admistrative leave with pay pending the shooting investigation. Thankfully the injuries suffered by the LEO was minor in Good police officers are not as easy to find and good factory workers.

....the guy kept changing the angle to them, almost getting them in side fire at one point. I think the officer did a great job of cleaning his clock which needed cleaning very badly indeed.

Texas Star made good observations. They did pause while he was on one knee and he appeared to fire again. And the point that folks conditioned to see TV/Movie shot folks is far from reality. I have not shot a person, I have bagged 100's of deer and an Elk. A 150 pound deer can go 40-100 yards with their lungs destroyed. A 180 pound person can still function with fatal lung shots.

I would have continued to fire until it was truly over. I know because I did mental training when first a LEO, if it happened no planning to do, just follow the training.

I'm glad both LEO's survived, I hope the younger officer can still remain on the force.

How long can a severely shot person function? Too long if they are armed.

I'm not absolutely sure with all the firing going on, But I think the pause in the officer's fire was to reload.
Just goes to show, keep shooting until they drop.

Right at the end, it sounds like someone came up and asked the officers if they needed help and said he had a pistol.

It looked to me as if the cop didn't shoot when he should, and shot too much after the suspect dropped. It will be interesting to see what the review board says. Of course, they weren't the one this guy was firing at!

Could the cop have been changing magazines? Didn't look as if he'd fired that much at the time.

I hope we learn which caliber and ammo were involved, and where the bad guy was hit. I know of one jihadist who was hit at some 15 feet, in the solar plexus or thereabouts. One round of 9mm NATO from a Beretta M-9 dropped him and he scrabbled around on the floor before dying about a minute later. Others who were well hit usually dropped at once, although a few needed a second or third shot. This guy soaked up more than that, if all of those rounds hit him. Every gunfight is different.

This creep had info on making bombs. The shooting probably saved some lives and property. I hope the media picks up on that aspect, instead of obsessing about the rifle.

In spite of what you see on TV or in the media, there is no such thing as a routine traffic stop. That could happen on any traffic stop at most anytime, any place.

I think these officers were perceptive in noticing the driver moving around before he got out. Funny thing, I made a traffic stop not long ago on a pickup truck with the driver as the only occupant. He was moving around about the cab of the pickup which I felt was hinky. I made a passenger side approach to the vehicle and I had my hand on my handgun. Turns out he was just digging around for his registration and insurance before I got there, but it 'offended' him when he saw me with my hand wrapped around my handgun even though it was still holstered. The rest of the interaction between us on the traffic stop was cordial enough and I did not write him a ticket.

Even so, he called the sheriff next day and complained that I treated him disrespectfully by approaching he and his vehicle in such an aggressive manner. He, an honest, law abiding citizen with no criminal record of any sort should not have been treated like a common criminal. The sheriff asked him if I’d written him a citation and the gentleman said no, to which the sheriff replied, “I wouldn’t expect that consideration next time.”

After the BG is hit, it seems that he yells, "Kill me!" Even with no reported criminal record, this nut job was a time bomb waiting to explode. As devastating as it was to the two officers, they probably prevented a future massacre at the hands of a random lunatic.

This video should be mandatory viewing for every person (not Forum members) who complains about the attitude of LEOs during traffics stops.

Well officers probably can celebrate that day as 2nd birthday. Wacko was shooting a rifle at what looked like no more than 7-10 yards and officers had minor injuries ? The guy up there definitely was watching after them that day !

Both officers were very, very lucky. The perp's woeful shooting saved them as much if not more than them shooting back. The rifles vs pistols thing also applies. Unless you are wearing military grade armour a COM hit from any rifle round with more grunt than a .22LR means you will likely stay hit. That guy went into spray and pray mode and fortunately most of his shots were total misses with only two peripheral hits, although those are bad enough.

Aimed shots are much more deadly. Sadly a Nye county deputy was killed in 2010 by a domestic abuser with an SKS who bothered to aim. He hit the officer three times with one round penetrating his vest, although it was never made clear if that was the fatal injury. The perp was terminated by another deputy on the scene.

NO stop is ever routine! I,as another poster already stated, prefer a passenger side approach especially at night! I can think of at least twice where it worked to my advantage. One was on a traffic stop for speeding on an Interstate in the middle of the night. He was watching for me in his driver's side mirror with his license in his left hand & his right beside his leg holding a snubby Model 10. When I challenged him ,he realized that he couldn't turn toward me fast enough and put the gun down. The second was on a burglar alarm call at a closed convenience store at about 3:30am. Two of us arrived in separate patrol cars and were checking the building when an old pickup pulls up from across the parking lot. The other deputy approaches from the driver's side and I came up on the right and saw the .30-30 Winchester on the seat next to the guy. He never admitted it. But,I always figured the guy shook the door etc. to set the alarm off ,parked just away from the building in the dark and was going try an ambush if a single car arrived. When we both got there about the same time coming in from different directions, he must have thought we'd seen him first & his plans changed.

The female officer was hit more than once. She was in the "shotgun" seat and she got out and went behind the cruiser. The perp got out and started firing and she retreated behind the cruiser. The male officer was shooting through the windshield from the driver's seat. He fired 29 rounds. The perp fired 33 rounds and officer Erin Thomas fired something like 17 rounds.

Agree with Mc5aw that the guy says "Kill me!", perhaps twice,

Death by cop, probably. And this guy had to have decided way before ever being stopped, that he would react to LE in that way if he was pulled over.

Wacko for sure.

Glad the officers were OK; it could have been so much worse, and the guy might still be on the loose...

Somehow, we have got to keep weapons out of the hands of the mentally ill, or know that they have them. I don't know how, but it's past time for this to happen.

I think it was a magazine change also, since the final volley was 17 rounds. I also believe that all were hits, including the one shot that struck the pavement a few inches in front of the perp. I think at that time it WAS truly over. Good shooting under the circumstances.

Caliber was most likely 7.62x39. Its the most abundant AK caliber and the mag looks to be like a 7.62 mag although its hard to tell with absolute certainty.

With adrenaline pumping its hard to say how many rounds would be enough. Some people are like bullet sponges ....they just absorb them and keep on going. A few years ago in NYC a man was shot some crazy amount of times by the NYPD and lived. He was shot something like over 20 times.

Hi:
Did I miss something or did the Officer (s) not call in their location until
the shooting started ?
Proceedure of my Agency was to called in vehicle description, license number (and state)and location before "Blue Light". With our method if the stop went sour, "#6008, shots fired, 10-24 (period).
Also "Love" your Dispatcher-They are your "Life Line"when you are on patrol.

Arik-

I imagine that you're right about the AK. But I meant that I wonder which calibers the cops had in their pistols. And where the suspect was hit.

I suspect that this guy's lousy markmanship went along with his yell to kill him. He WANTED to miss! Suicide by cop...Maybe. In the officers' shoes, I'd certainly have acomodated him.

Did anyone notice how long the backup lights showed on the suspect vehicle? Or were those brake lights? I think he was debating whether to ram the patrol car or bolt.

I've often wondered why ALL police cruisers don't have some sort of armor either embedded within or attached to the outside of both front doors of the vehicle. Maybe even thicker glass on the door windows.
Ok, cost.
I don't see how it could be any more expensive than all the other gear & gadgets on the typical cruiser. Even so, would it not be worth it for the officers to have at least some measure of protection in such a scenario?

If there'd be no space within the car door for armor....then the doors outside could perhaps be made of 1/8" steel instead the typical "soda-pop-can" metal seen on the average car.

The LEO must have reloaded at some point. I counted 17 rounds going into this moke at the end (after he was on his knees). Seemed like they were all going from the male LEO's pistol. Got Glock?

I wondered about that too. Red flag, but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Those were red brake lights. He probably had his foot on the brake.

Gotcha. Thought you ment the AK.

Im not entirely convinced he wanted to miss. He just sprayed instead of aiming. Ive tried shooting like that once...also from an AK. Its not very controlable and hard to really hit anything. You think the barrel is lined up with the target but its not. That type of shooting is only good for throwing a lot of lead in a short period of time in hopes of hitting something, anything, or to keep people down.

You are right, cost is the issue which prevents the typical police cruiser from having at least some armor in the doors.

Now, if someone could invent a way where police cruiser door armor could be modular in such a way that it could be rather easily uninstalled when the car is removed from service (i.e., traded in) and reinstalled economically on the next car, that inventor would be our next millionare.

They do! We have a few NY state police Tahoes that had armour door panels. Seems they were taken out after sale. The sticker on the inside is crossed out
