Default F84F static display

I had my camera so I stopped to get some pics. I never worked on f84s but I have spent some time inside T33 and F106 types. I was skinny so they made me crawl up the exhaust for the hourly Avionics exhaust gas temp checks. Location is Montpelier, Indiana.

Brings back memories. I was a jet engine mech and spent a year of F84's while in Chaumont France in 1962-63. I had the unfortunate experience of having one blow up under me. While TDY in Wheelus AFB Tripoli Lybia and the pilot having problems starting one I was in the cockpit starting it, and there was a "wham" very loud and a chunk of the starter, ( a small jet engine itself) turbine broke off and tore through the fuselage ripping out all the electrical harness, hydrolic lines, etc. and landed 75' up the ramp. There had been an electrician on the wing leaning over my shoulder at the time and it just barely missed his leg. The plane was scrapped as they were planned to phase out the following year. They were fairly easy to work on and pretty reliable little fighter. I also worked on T33's as well as B66's in Sculthorpe England.

There is one at the Terre Haute courthouse 181 TFS I think. They went to Vietnam with those and the F100 and had an exemplary record with close support. Slow and stable put the 500 pounders where needed.

Default I don't know why, but......

I don't know why but these straight wing jobs with wing tanks look absolutely beautiful to me. I love to see old movies with these breaking off where you see the full bottom view, it looks almost like a religious symbol. Swept wings had to come along and ruin things, well kind of.... sort of....

Update: I just saw something interesting in that the F-84 was tested as a 'parasite fighter' launched from the bomb bay of a B-36. It didn't work, but back then they would try anything.

Nice pics. I worked on T-33's early in my career. Not bad to work on.

Never saw one during my time in, but always thought they were the second best looking jet fighter around--second only to the Hawker Hunter.

Whoever designed the wide track main gear on that thing was big on stability!

shouldazagged is right...you are mistaken. There are plenty of differences between the two airframes.

Was the F-84 ever outfitted with the "Mighty Mouse" Air to Air rocket system?

Interesting thread with some interesting insights. Have to agree the Hawker Hunter is a great looking aircraft that I'm still fortunate to see in the air here from time to time. In fact last week I saw a Blackburn Buccaneer in the air.

and do you also believe in space monkeys??? sorry, that is an F-84f, the first F-84 with a swept wing, still no match for the lovely little Mig in a turning contest, actually, although the F-86 was a superior aircraft to the Mig, the Mig would give it a run for its money as well, one of my first employers used to spend hours talking aircraft, and about being caught on top and flying GCAs on bingo fuel... those gals would pull some funky tricks when getting close to Mach so he related. Billy Magg

likely not a happy chick in a slow speed, high alpha, high G condition, I'll bet she would be happy to snap over the top and eat your lunch for ya, just guessing on this one???? billy
