Question Document Recovery?

Deleted a document to trach can, emptied trash can, was not the document I wanted to get rid of.

Any good software programs to recover deleted files from your hard drive?

PC or Mac? If you google "recover deleted files" lots of options are found.

step 1 - STOP Using that computer immediately - anything you save or update could reuse the disk space occupied by that file.

step 2 - if Windows use Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download to run a scan - of course the process of installing could pose a risk - better if it was already in place. If Mac - I haven't used this one but try Mac Data Recovery Guru | Recover Deleted Files in OS X

step 3 - to avoid this situation as much as possible in the future - set up some sort of automated backup to an external device or to "the cloud" - Online Data Backup - Offsite, Onsite, & Cloud - CrashPlan Backup Software has lots of options - and is cross platform - and is free if you are not backing up to their servers (for example if you have two computers you can backup from one to the other - and recovery can be from any system that has crashplan installed)

Windows Password Recovery Can help you reset forgotten Windows password, you can enter Windows directly without entering any password with the Windows password recovery tool. So it is the best way to reset your lost Windows password.

Data recovery is what I do for a living, datarecovery.net. Do not even turn the machine back on, virtual memory creation can cause overwrite. Pull the drive and put it into an external enclosure and attach via USB to a like platform. For PC, go to Runtime.org and DL the demo "Get Data Back for NTFS" and run it against the volume. If your file shows up, buy a single user license. If it doesn't show, too late, the start cluster is already overwritten and the base MFT record for the file is overwritten as well.

If Mac, go to Prosofteng.com and get Data Rescue 3....same routine with this software. These are the two best available to the public at this time. If the file is critical, PM me for more info.
