What is your White Whale?
Everyone has one dream gun. What is yours?
Mine is simple-I want a first year, flat latch model 49 in 90% + condition with box and papers.

White whale? Like in Moby Dick? Ahab sought the whale out of hatred, because it had bitten his leg off. By any chance did a flat-latch Model 49 shoot you in the foot?

Maybe this should be phrased, "What is your King Solomon's Mine, or Holy Grail?"
But the Holy Grail gun theme is as common here as are bear topics.

S&W 460v with the 5 inch barrel. I know, it is a lot of gun and since I don't live in Alaska I can't justify it. But I want one so bad it hurts! I do have bears around here in Utah? Every time I go Elk hunting my Fahter-in-law says he sees one following me around lol.

Over the years I've owned about every type firearm that I've wanted.
In many cases for me, the wanting has been better than the owning.
I'm a shooter, so I dream of being financially able to purchase a home place that would allow me a backyard range to more enjoy the few I already have.

That's often been true for me and is why I really don't have any grail guns anymore. I already own what I actually need, and anything I buy on a sudden whim will likely turn out to be more of a "white elephant" than a "white whale."

Mine is fairly common. 8-3/8" blued 27-2, 3Ts in the presentation case. Had one years ago and foolishly sold it.

A Winchester Model 70, controlled feed extractor (like the recent ones have), walnut and blue steel, .308, Featherweight - and now the shoe drops - left-handed.
That configuration was listed as being available on a special order basis in 2006, but Winchester reorganized before I knew about it. Would've been pretty expensive in any case - MSRP was $2866. I have one of that exact make except right-handed, but I shoot long guns left-handed and I'd like one that way.
http://www.winchesterguns.com/produc...13C&mid=535946
The White Guppy that I am pursuing is an accessory, a "drop box" extended floorplate for my left-handed .460 Weatherby that would allow me to add another round in the mag - i.e., a high capacity magazine. Cuz ya never know....

I thought the same thing. Moby Dick is a story about revenge rather than an unattainable prize. If put that way, my dream gun would be a 70's blued Model 29 .44 Magnum with either the 6.5' or the 8 3/8 barrel. That of course is the one Dirty Harry used on the first movie.
Now, I'm sure that many of you are getting tired of hearing about Dirty Harry and that gun but I have a very good reason for mentioning it again.
Yesterday, I bought a 4 movie package of the Dirty Harry series so I could see the first one again. Along with the movie is a 20 minute short with interviews about who Harry Callahan was, what he stood for and what the legal and political climate was when the movie was made. The short pointed out that it was a very difficult time for law enforcement because the law seemed more concerned with the rights of the criminals than the victims. Sound familiar? Harry was not out to protect the law, he was about justice for the victims. He was a hunter and I'm told the .44 Magnum was developed for that purpose. It was not the usual run of the mill gun that took a number of shots to take down the bad guy. It put the bad guys down with one or two shots, justice served.
I know that's not politically correct today and I'm definitely not condoning vigilantism or violating any citizen's rights but I'm sure a lot of us feel the same way about getting justice for the victims and the legal loopholes that let the bad guys get away with murder. Today, we're fighting for the right to defend ourselves and there are a ton of folks who are hell bent on taking our rights away and making us easy stationary targets for bad guys whoever they may be.
For me, that M29 represents that quest for justice for those victims who have lost their rights because of criminals and just punishment for the offenders. Am I a bit idealistic here? Yeah, I am. Do I really care? No, because I don't live in a fantasy world but I can dream.

55k 6043.. This is the serial number of the Model 66-1 that I purchased in 1979 through O'herrons police supply in Danville Illinois.
I had just hired on as a Deputy Sheriff with the Indiana Sheriff's department I would serve with until I retired as a Captain on December 31 of 2012. When the department issued Model 686 revolvers in 1981, I saw no real need to hang on to the Model 66 and traded it for a 6" model 29. Check your numbers guys and gals. Cash awaits.
