Default Most painful recovery from surgery ever!

Here is my bit of wisdom - Never take the new issue of Handguns or Guns & Ammo into the john again. I just had a Hemorrhoidectomy and OMG the pain of recovery is unbelievable. I am fairly healthy, run twice a week, lost weight, changed the diet but still had issues. I thought having a kidney stone was bad but this is worse. I walk like a 200 year old man, can't stand or sit without help and the pain was ridiculous. In today's day and age you think they would have some wonder drug but even Codeine doesn't help.

I hope this fixes any issues because I will never have this done again. To top it all off it was two days before my birthday. I got to celebrate by sitting on a rubber donut laced up with pain killers and praying for a meteor to strike me dead.

Six days later I am slowly getting better. I am off the pain pills but I don't go far from my sitz bath or donut!

Gah, this sucks. Take my advice - get in and get out and don't linger otherwise you will join me in the pain of recovery.

Hope I didn't gross anybody out. I am feeling better and wanted to rant. Since this is my favorite board I figure why not.
Thanks for listening.

Sorry about your pain, sounds horrible.

Did the doctor tell you the cause of your hemorrhoids was prolonged sitting on the pot?

If this is true & that was the diagnosis, we should probably link this thread to the "Reading Material On The Throne" thread to prevent needless suffering by other Forum members!

I found it gives a guy a whole new appreciation of natural childbirth.

Grim; I had this operation back in 1958. First BM was filled with razor blades & battery acid. Much better now with Metamucil's help.

My dad had it-said for the first week it was like passing broken glass.
Preparation H stock went south when he had the operation.

I had it about 20 years ago. It didn't seem too bad to me. The first few BMs were like pulling barbed wire out of your butt. The thing I hated the most was they gave me one of those shots in the spine to deaden me from the waist down. While laying in the recovery room I started trying to move my toes and could not. This scared the you know what out of me. I was laying there thinking what if this stuff don't wear off.
Having the guy come in my room with his shaving kit was not much fun either.
By the way, my doc said sitting a lot, straining a lot can cause them or you can just be lucky and have them run in your family.
I do not regret having it done.

I had this operation 33 years ago and remember the pain as the worst experience of my life. Swore I would never go through that again. I still have some issues there but tread lightly. Good luck.

Grim,
get feeling better soon and stay with a low fiber diet for a week or so.

Looks like I'm not going to be reading War and Peace or The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich any time soon.

I had the same thing (Level/Stage III) but my recovery was relatively pain-free. First...I didn't eat much..Second, I took all the pain meds they gave me at the specified intervals whether I thought I needed them or not. First 6 days were the worst, but even that wasn't bad. My advice: Don't each much, and when you do, make it vegetables, take lots of warm baths....I lost 20 pounds and plan to keep it off. Tough way to do it but it worked....I had low-dose percocet for the first few days and then something like 5% Vicodin/Acetominafin for a week after that.

Glad I had it done. Would not suggest anyone wait if the horror stories of recovery is what's keeping you from taking care of it.

Are you aware that many pain killers like Hydrocodone cause constipation? That's not going to help.

I had it about 3 years ago and it was the worst experience of my life. It took 8-weeks to completely heal. But it was the best decision I could have ever made. When it's all said and done you'll be glad you did it. I've never had them come back even though they say 50% do.

You're right, don't follow your Dr.'s directions on taking the pain meds. It will work out better that way and you're likely to have much less pain.
