Default Chattanooga

As those of you who read and replied to my previous Tennessee thread know, my wife and I are going to Memphis and Nashville as part of our southern vacation next month.

Out of the clear blue a friend of mine sent me an email suggesting that Chattanooga as a possible relocation site. He sited a lot of positives about the area, most of which I sort of knew.

It wasn't on our itinerary, but since we'll be driving back from the Gulf Coast of Alabama, we'll be going right through it. Depending on when we get there, we'll stop for lunch or maybe dinner. I don't think we'll do an overnight there, but who knows?

Anyway, I was looking on Zillow at real estate in the area and then looking at zip codes Hixson seems to be one of the nicer areas. I don't know enough about the area to figure out if Hixson is a neighborhood or a separate town.

I know that we have at least one member from the area and probably others. So, if anyone can give me an idea about nicer neighborhoods in the area and ones to avoid, I'd appreciate it.

This is still preliminary, but TN is just looking better and better in general the more I look. House prices seem very reasonable, the weather in most of the state is close to what we're looking for, low taxes, firearms friendly.

Thanks.

Hi Gary,
Chattanooga is a pretty nice area. Lots of pretty water and woods.
We are in and out of there a couple times a year and I always found it an entertaining place.
Surrounded by good fishing too.
Hope it works out for you.

I'd pick Chattanooga over both Memphis and Nashville simply due less congestion (take that to mean lower population) and to me the area is much more scenic.

If you are going to be on the Alabama Coast you had better come over to Biloxi M.S. for a afternoon and have lunch at one of the Casino's.

Bea Rivage,Hard Rock or Palace. Palace is my Favorite.

The Beau is like Vegas. The builder said he didn't build it for the locals, beautiful inside.

Before Katrina The Grand Casino spent $1,000,000 on just one women's rest room. Never seen it but all of the ladies I escorted to the Grand said it was gorgeous in there.

Make a day of it and come meet Jefferson Davis Great Great Grand Son. He lives at Beauvoir about a couple of miles from the Beau.

If you move down South you'll be a "Damn Yankee"

But the saying is that anybody who lives North of I 10 is a Yankee.

Hixson used to be a separate town NW of Chatanooga but hard to see the boundaries now.
Of the towns you have mentioned I would pick the Chattanooga area. The Tenn river runs through town and you are only a couple of hours away from the Great Smoky Mts.
We have talked about moving to Tenn but so far we haven't found an in tact farm in the Townsend area that would support 4 families.
I lived in Memphis for the last 2 years I was in the service and the summers were bad. In June the breeze quit and it was just hot until Sept., plus it is flat. I didn't mind since I was only 4 1/2 hr from home home, not the 2000 miles away in San Diego.

I live in Memphis but Mrs. Sheepdawg and I plan on moving to the Chattanooga area when I retire. We can't get out of Memphis fast enough, it's already being compared to Detroit.

Do you have a reason for wanting to move to a larger town?

My wife was in Knoxville on business last summer and me and my two daughters (9 and 10 then) came along. We took a day trip to Chattanooga. Great aquarium! We also took the high speed boat trip through the Grand Canyon of the South - really neat trip.

Chattanooga has alot going for it.

Chickamauga Lake is rated #6 in the Nation for fishing.

Great shops, etc.

The downside..........an uprising of gangs in the city. 66 deaths so far this year I believe.

I live between Chattanooga and Knoxville.

When I shop, I go to Knoxvillle.

Downtown Nashville is a nice place to visit especially Broadway St is known for all the country music singers to hang out and party at. Also if you watch a show called American Pickers known as American Archaeology they have a shop there as well. If you ever by Brentwood outside of Nashville you probably will see the bigger homes there is mostly all the Country Music singer homes and in Franklin as well.

I use to live in Nashville for 2 years and know that Broadway Street and Brentwood are the most famous places to visit if your a tourist. I've been through Chattanooga and it's amazing there all the mountains and the residents are really nice to the tourist and travelers.

In Nashville I met some of the Country Music singers like as Trace Atkins and Wyonna Judd plus I met Chris Moneymaker the World Of Poker Tour Champion when he beat Sammy Farha in 2003.

I was born in Knoxville right after the War of 1812. Now it's ranked worst in the country for allergy sufferers. I live in Louisville, which is ranked second worst. Except for nice scenery I wouldn't gain much by moving there.

I lived in Chattanooga as a kid, and loved it. I no longer recognize anything there except the river and Lookout Mountain, but it really does offer a lot of nice advantages. Foothills of the Smokies, Lake Chickamauga, nice weather, and many other amenities. If I were able to move and really wanted to, Chattanooga would be my destination.

I'm sorry to hear about gang action there, but it can't be as bad as what I hear from Memphis. That's become a really dangerous town, by all accounts.

You might also consider Louisville. Gun friendly, rated as one of the safer cities in the country, lots of cultural activities, great college sports, a good AAA baseball team, excellent restaurants, and city water rated the best-tasting in the country in a recent comparison test. Metro area of about million people but, traffic problems are comparatively few.

I think I'll stay and croak here.

A lot of old money lives on Signal Mtn, newer money is on Lookout Mtn.

There's so much nice living around its difficult to know where to start. Hixon, Harrison, Ooltewah, Apison, Collegedale, all have a variety of Leave it to Beaver neighborhoods, large country wooded lots, upscale retirement, river homes or golf course living. There's also some great downtown city condo living. You will definitely want a realtor to show you around if you are serious because there is too many great properties you'll never find wandering around on your own.

Execs at VW said they picked this place for quality of living. They were right.

Oh almost forgot... Chattanooga Rifle Club is fantastic. And there's three indoor shooting ranges, Hixson, Chattanooga and Harrison which are all 5min from each other. We like guns here. We've got one of the biggest shopping malls and the main road through it is Gunbarrel.

I live in Bradley County, 20 miles North of Chattanooga. I've been here since 1988. I moved here accidentally, fell in love with the area and put down roots. It is the best decision I've ever made. The country around here is fantastic, boating, whitewater, hiking, rock climbing, vintage train rides and some of the nicest people you could ask for.
I'm not familiar too much with the actual Chattanooga area, but Hixson is a growing place, nice area but unless you have your heart set on living in the city please check out Bradley County. Cost of living is more than reasonable, power is cheap (thank you TVA), and this is a booming area.
I'd love to meet you and your Wife for lunch or dinner on your visit. I'll PM you with contact number, don't hesitate to call.
You will not regret moving here. I travelled all over the states in my younger days, and as stated ended up here by accident, but wanted to have my Son start and finish school in the same system. I would never consider leaving now. This is home.
As far as gang activity, name a city that hasn't been touched by it. If you want trouble, you can find it wherever you go. We don't have armed gangs of 'you'ts' running loose, but if you live the lifestyle they are active in, then you'd best expect that behavior. Most of the violence here is drug related and confined to the rival gangs, very few 'non-combatants' get involved. It is not a worry.
Plese call, I'd love to get together.

Once again the replies from forum members are incredible. Thanks.

A couple of random replies to comments, without quoting the comments.

No, we're not at all tied to living IN a city. We'd like to live near one. Currently we're 20 miles south of Boston. Depending on traffic that's anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour travel time.

The town we're in has about 25,000 or so. It's off of a state highway and has good access to Boston and Providence, RI.

I hate traffic! 34 years of working in Boston and I hate red lights, stop signs, pedestrian crossing, and taking an hour to drive a mile.

Memphis is out. I wouldn't go near the place based on what I've heard, read, and seen. The only reason we're going there is that my wife likes Elvis and has long wanted to see Graceland. I have an acquaintance who owns several apartment buildings there. He never goes there and has a management company to run it for him. He says it's a sewer and I have no reason to doubt him. Memphis is about the same size as Boston with about twice the homicide rate. Yech.

We picked Nashville because of the Grand Ole Opry, Country Music HOF, music row, etc... I've become a big fan of classic country music the last several years and want to see where so much of it was made. We'll probably stop in to look at Antique Archeology just because we like the show. I like Danielle, except for the tattoos. Well built, brunette, pretty face... She doesn't run that store, but she seems to be there fairly often.

Oh, and I wouldn't mind going to Bristol if we were to move down there. Back before it was cool, in the 1960s and '70s I was one of the few Yankees who liked NASCAR. OK, I was one of the few who even knew what NASCAR was.

Guns are part of my calculus. I was only half kidding a year or so ago when my son asked me where I wanted to retire to. I said, "Somewhere that I can walk out onto my back porch and shoot." Right now I live ten minutes from my range and there is one that is two minutes away. I want something like that, preferably with a nice outdoor range. I don't know how much my wife will end up shooting, but I want her to have the option as well.

We're thinking retirement. Right now we're on either side of 60 and both still working. Within 3-5 years, probably closer to 5, we plan to stop that, sell our house here, and move somewhere. I loved growing up in MA and it's a nice place as far as geography, scenery, and attractions go. I've come to hate winter, so I want somewhere that has much milder winters. I've also come to detest the politics, but TN seems better in that regard. As Zell Miller would say, "I didn't leave Massachusetts, Massachusetts left me."

So, we're looking for a lower cost area that still has nice houses. We don't need anything huge. Two bedrooms, two baths, eat in kitchen, living room, den, and a car port or garage. Some of the houses I looked at have basements and I like that, but it's not a deal breaker. A nice quiet side street in a good area. Good bicycle riding area would be nice since I hope to still be riding in a few years.

If we move, I'll bring my own wife, so I'll be a Damned Yankee, but not a GD Yankee.

Chattanooga proper seems to have a significant crime rate for a city of it's size. A lot of property crimes, but some robberies and other violent crimes. If I moved to the area my house would have a good alarm and I'd be armed whenever possible. Then again, my house here has a good alarm and I'm armed whenever possible.

We'll definitely use a broker if we decide to move. I won't bother this time since it's a scouting trip, not a buy a house trip.

I lived in the East Brainerd area of Chattanooga for eight years. I have a daughter that lives there now. I shot at the Chattanooga Rifle Club for a couple of years and it is a fine facility. Chattanooga is growing, which city isn't, and after moving back to WV I find the traffic a little heavy for me, especially around the Hamilton mall, which was close to where I lived. Cleveland is about 20-30 minutes north of Chattanooga on I-75. It is rapidly growing as well but is way smaller than Chattanooga. You might want to read up. The folks in that part of the world are extremely friendly.

I like Tennessee; grew up 12 miles from the border, and my girlfriend is from McNairy County, born and raised. However, I'm not wild about their State Senators, both of whom voted for the amnesty bill last week. Replace them, and I might reconsider the state myself.

I have lived in Ringgold, GA since retiring from the Air Force in 2003. We're just a few miles from the convenience of Chattanooga, but have the beauty of a small town. Check us out. Georgia is also very gun friendly.

Let's see...

Out of Chattanooga but still close
Retirement living
Nice but reasonable price
Low crime
Close to outdoor range
Bicycling

Sounds like Greenbriar Cove in Collegedale. Housing * Seegreenbriarcove If you get tired there's also assisted living in another section.... and another section beyond that for those who become very tired.

For bicycling and walking there's direct access to Wolftever Creek Greenway, and Collegedale police is located right there on the greenway. Collegedale, TN - Official Website - Wolftever Creek Greenway I've posted a lot of pics of Veterans Park which is on the greenway. Let's go for a Memorial Day walk

Chattanooga Rifle club is 3mi away. CRC

Anyway... there's a lot to look in the Chattanooga area.

You may want to take a look at some of the "medium" size towns in TN when making comparisons for nice places to live. Jackson, TN and the surrounding area has a lot to offer,

Take a look at Columbia and Murfreesboro in Middle, TN. In East TN, check out Oak Ridge, Lenoir City and in upper E TN the Tri Cities area.

Personally, I prefer middle TN! I was born in Memphis and have lived in Lafayette, Jackson, Nashville, Brentwood and Tullahoma.
Come on in the water is fine!

Let me know if you need an introduction to George Dickel when y'all are visiting!

Default from a local's point of view

Chattanooga is about 15 minutes North of where I live in extreme NW Georgia. It is a great place to swing through and regarded as the "Scenic City" for its diverse tourism oppurtunities. As far as places to stay during your visit, anywhere in the downtown area is great and there are a multitude of nice acommodations, including the Choo-Choo (former train terminal) and the Reed House. Downtown is very "green" and eco friendly with both sides of the riverfront being well sculpted and maintained. The Hunter Museum is a must see, as well as the Tennessee Aquarium. Consider taking a trip on one of the river tours. The Southern Belle is an antibellum paddle boat with numerous daily river tours and there are others more modern as well. The Chattanooga Duck tours are on a restored amphibious WWII personel carrier that will take you through the streets of downtown as well as across the river to the North Shore shopping district and Coolidge Park. There are many upscale dining options as well as a variety of bar scenes. The IMAX theater is available as a combo option when you purchase tickets for the aquarium. Bluff View art district is sculpture/botanical garden worth checking out and ask a local while there for directions to Rembrandt's coffee house. Downtown is very safe respectively compared to Knox or Nash...there are areas to avoid but none of the touristy areas are of concern. The outlying Chattanooga area has many more tourist oppuntunities including The Incline, Ruby Falls, Rock City Gardens, Point Park, Chickamauga Lake, and just across the state line in Georgia you'll find the Chickamauga/Chattanooga National Military Park complete with a Civil War museum with a fantastic antique gun gallery you must check out. Tours are available from Downtown Chatt to Point Park atop Lookout Mtn. to the Military Park and gun museum in Fort Oglethorpe Ga which has its own a steeped military to both the Civil War and as a military base during the WWI era. Sequoyah Caverns will be closing to the public after this year after being publicly available for the last 85 years with some beautiful crystal structures and glass bottom boat tours and is about 30 min. outside of Chatt across the Alabama state line. I'm trying to think of any other points of interest to recommend and if they come to mind I will post a follow up. Hope this helps and hope you swing through and enjoy my neck of the woods.

Considering how little I know about TN in general, I'm open to most area except Memphis. I've never heard anything that would make me say it's a place I'd where I'd want to live.

I'm not tied to a big city, in fact a smaller city would be fine. Even at that "downtown" is not the preferred area. While Chattanooga seems about right demographically, it would be in the outlying areas, not the city itself.

Lot's of good information in this thread, thanks again to everyone.

And yes, I had to do a search to see who George Dickel was. Or rather, what it is.

Have lived in Chattanooga for the last 3 years. The town is simply a very nice place to live. I travel the U.S for a living and do notice the rapid growth of cities and what results in this rapid growth, Charles Carualt once deemed Chattanooga the dirtiest city in the U.S which I'm sure was true at the time but now the progressive thinking of the city and the major industries Chattanooga is where it's at. Think Outdoors and family, there are events year long that utilizes all of the cities best attributes. As with all cities there is growing crime but it is more isulated in a few areas of town. I can walk from my home to the north shore area of the river in 10 minutes and have all of down town to my disposal and never worry about confrontation. Come spend a few days you'll really love it as my wife and I do. Best pizza is here at Lupi's local and great taste and I eat pizza all over the U.S plus a host of other eating establishments and we have culture.
Come on do it!

I guess that you noticed that everyone likes Chattanooga. I lived there and also liked living there. Hixson area is very nice. East Tennessee is also very nice. Memphis used to be nice, but crime has taken over Memphis.

I've noticed. I talked to my wife and we're going to change our plans to stay one night in Chattanooga. She doesn't know much about it, but she's game.

The only time I've lived any other place was when I was in service. So, all I have to compare with the Chattanooga area is "talk" and "pictures" of other places.
I was born at Stone Mountain, Georgia and moved to Chattanooga when I was two years old... that was 63 years ago.
I now live about 6 or 7 miles east of Cleveland, which is about 35 miles up I-75 from Chattanooga.
I can't see another house where I live.. and that's what I want. But, I can be in town in about 15 minutes.. or Chattanooga in a little over 30 minutes. But, I really like going east from my house.. I can have total peace and quiet when I visit my "Church"!!

I'll save you a seat...

...If you are choosing to live in Tennessee, choose Eastern Tennessee, we don't get the severe storms like Middle and the West part of the state get's.

I live in Maryville, 20 miles from Knoxville, 30 minutes to the Great Smoky Mountain's National park...not many Boston Red Sox fan's here though.
