Anyone know how to get rid of a skunk? I live in town so I can't use my guns.

Call animal control,usually there is someone on call after hours as well.

Invite a co-worker over you don't like, get him drunk. Give him a big stick, point out the skunk to him, and bet him he can't smack the stray cat with said stick. Kill two birds with one stone.....

They are nocturnal critters.
I had a juvenile in my shop one afternoon, and when i turned on the lights he crawled up under a bench and went to sleep.
I turned the lights off and left the door open and he went out when it got around dusk.
I would not try to do it the hard way.
If you get one in a live trap, be sure to throw a tarp over it. He will not get too agressive if he is 'secluded'.
I also have personal experience with 'possums and rats.

Skunks go where there's food; if you see little mounds of dirt in your yard they're digging out grubs so treat your lawn for grubs. Keep your garbage pails covered even when they're out by the curb for pick-up.

They also go places for shelter like under porches. They're prolific diggers so it's pretty easy for them to get under anything without a foundation. In this case trapping might be necessary.

Trapping them is easy; bait a Hav-a-hart trap with peanut butter (you may catch cats if you use a can of tuna) and put it in the area they're frequenting. When you catch them approach the trap slowly with a tarp and cover it. You can then load them in a truck and transport them to a release point.

One thing to keep in mind with trap placement; they will try to dig their way out and will literally dig all the sod out under and around the trap so you are going to have a spot that will need re-seeding.

Live trap. walk up to it slow from the front .talk ina soothing voice & cover the trap. Then baptise it in a creek or tub of water.Amen.

I had them living under my back porch. Had to wait till after dark when they went out then I closed up the access hole they were using and they moved on.

I have read that you can put some law books where the skunks are. That will cause lawyers to congregate. The skunks will leave. Larry

One night I was tracking bears. Had one coming down a narrow canyon where they were building custom homes. Was at my "office" (the tailgate of my truck) and felt something brush against me. Looked down and their was a skunk standing on my foot. He walked off under the truck. I waited for what seemed like hours before he waddled off (it was likely less than 5 minutes) via the front of the truck.

That was my scariest episode: more so that being hassled by DEA for being near a pot plantation or being charged by a young bear.

Summer before last I was having trouble with skunks eating my dog's food and I was afraid Brutus would wake up and try to make friends with one. So I set a live trap in a plastic 55 gallon drum on its side. Then when one got caught I just put the lid on the drum, stood it up, and stuck in the garden hose sending him to his watery grave. Worked pretty well and I never got sprayed.

You're idea is great right up until the "baptise" part.

"sq hunter" has the right idea. Use a live trap and bait it with sardines. When the skunk is caught inside the trap, approach it slowly preferably from a side where the critter can't see you. Throw a large tarp over the entire trap and then transport it either in the back of a pickup truck or on a cargo carrier. Once you get to an isolated area, set the trap down on the ground with it still covered, uncover the door area and walk away. The skunk will come out on its own and then take off into the woods. No need to kill it.

This past year my chocolate Lab was constantly chasing one away from our bird feeder when I let her out to pee for the night. She was sprayed 3 times in 3 months, SO I was told that skunks don't like light where they feed. So I turned on the patio light (just one 100 watt bulb) and that did the trick. I figure leaving a light burning all night is pretty cheap insurance against a full fledged skunk shower. By the way, the only recipe that rids dogs of the smell is
1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup of baking soda
1 to 2 teaspoons liquid soap
for very large pets one quart of tepid tap water may be added to enable complete coverage.
If the dog was sprayed in the face, you can't use this around their eyes. However I found a shampoo that does a reasonable job of covering up the smell. It's called Skunk-Off. I had to buy it at our vet, but you can use in around eyes etc.

So... do skunks have any natural predators? I cannot think of anything including very hungry coyotes and vultures....Enlighten me if you have an answer.

I am sure I saw "Bear" Gryiells (sp) stalk,trap, and eat one....I do not, however, believe skunks to be his favored table-fare.
.The way he gagged and spit, not likely his go-to snack either.

Pour ammonia in an old Frisbee (or other suitable plastic container) and they will leave and not come back. Works with racoons, as well. I have done this in crawl spaces, and it works like a charm.

In college, we learned it was the Great Horned Owl, and that skunks make up a good portion of their diet. As I recall, there were several reasons why the Great Horned Owl was so successful: 1) the owl and the skunk are both nocturnal' 2) the flight of the Great Horned Owl is almost totally silent; 3) the owl has superior night vision, and can easily spot the skunk; 4) the long talons of the owl are sufficient to slice clean through the intervertebral spaces of the skunk's spinal cord, thereby severing same before the skunk can react (run, spray, etc.); and finally, 5) the owl has a poor, to non-existent sense of smell. As I recall, dogs and coyotes will occasionally harvest a skunk, but it's largely winged predators (owls, falcons, hawks) that do the most damage to them.

Also remember like stated they are nocturnal so if you see one in the daytime he most likely has rabies they are also scavengers and will eat everything, did a job on my honey bees.

Lets see I tried moth balls, urine, blocking them out only thing that seems to work for me is putting some cat food in the middle of the road and they will eat it. I have a nasty curve in front of the place with lots of accidents, it seems to work pretty good but the smell still travels the 500 foot up the drive to the house so have to close the windows till it rains. It also works for raccoons and opossum's.

Or you could try a good air gun they will take them just go for the head shot and avoid the back end.

If you use a broadhead DON'T aim for the arse-don't ask me how I know this

You're right Dave. In fact, many people buy lifesized replicas of the Great Horned Owl and place them around their yard in several decorative positions. This, in and of itself, will cause animals like the spotted and stripped skunk to vacate the area. One has to remember to change the postions of the owl statues now and then because.........
