Default The Lone Ranger

Well, what do you think?

I am looking forward to it.

If Bruckheimer works his Pirates of the Caribbean majic in the old west should be good.

I'm itching for a good western.

Just hope it's not all show and no story.

I'm lookin' forward to it too. I was always a fan of the Clayton Moore, Jay Silverheels version.
In "Native" magazine the Navajo and other American Indian Nations approve of Johnny Depps portrayal of Tonto and I wanna see it.

That surprises me, pleasantly. I figured it would be a really odd, off-the-wall portrayal. Might have to see it myself.

If I remember correctly, that doesn't always happen, part of the movie was filmed on Navajo land and Depp was ceremoniously blessed by the Navajo nation. Tonto was portrayed as Comanche and apparently Depp has some Native blood and was accepted by the Comanche nation as a tribal member.

In my "older guy opinion" Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels are the only two people to play The Lone Ranger and Tonto.

John Wayne isn't in it

May still be entertaining

I'll probably make it one of the three or four I see in the theater each year.

My oldest son and I are extras in the movie. Spent six weeks in Creede, Colorado on set as background fodder. Don't know if we made the final cut but we are sure gonna go find out on opening day!!!

Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels are THE only Lone Ranger & Tonto in my opinion. Besides which I can't stand anything with Depp.

I'm going to go see it with the girlfriend. We're both looking forward to it.
Looks good to me, but what do I know? I actually like the 1981 Legend of the Lone Ranger movie, which I gather was panned as one of the worst movies ever. I even tracked it down on DVD.
On the other hand, I used to enjoy the black and white originals when I was a kid (re-re-re-runs), but if I try to watch them nowdays, they're almost unwatchable for me.

one of my most memorable moments in life was the time I met Clayton Moore, in person. he was in full costume, handed me one of his revolvers and we put on a mock gun fight for the children in the hospital's pediatric ward. he out drew me as if I was made of stone and the revolver felt like "N" frame weight.

Is Depp now qualified to receive casino revenue?

Marlon Brando was Depp's acting mentor. The director of the Chris Reeve "Superman" movie was warned that Brando would attempt to play Superman's father as a "purple balloon".

Depp has taken on that Brando trait, and in most of his recent movies has been doing the "purple balloon", the "Lone Ranger"appears to be another example of his OTT acting.

We will go see it. Neither my wife or I have any expectations whatsoever, and I do not expect it to be anything even close to what the characters have traditionally been. As a matter of fact, given this day and age, I expect Tonto to be the main character who changes the Ranger into what he is.

I understand that the National Audubon Society disapproves of Johnny Depp's makeup, if not his performance.

I doubt I'll go see it. There is only one Clayton Moore & Jay Silverheels. The Local Carmike theater contacted our SASS club offering free passes if we would come dressed as cowboys. (Normal dress for some of us.) They wanted all the bells & whistles like spurs, chaps, etc. We were all so welcome. Until I asked if there would be a problem with pistols in our holsters, or our double barrel shotguns & rifles. They wanted it realistic. The manager was horrified that I would even suggest it. She did say we could use nerf guns, or maybe squirtguns. I explained that the leather some cowboys sport runs $500 to $1000 and that I doubted anybody would put a squirtgun in one. Alas and alack. No cowboys at the theatre. No free passes.

Ditto here. Its like saying that Kevin Costner-was better than Errol Flynn as Robin Hood, that Jeff Bridges was better than Duke in: True Grit, that Markey Mark (Walburg?) was better than Charlton Heston in the Planet of the Apes-that kinda thing.

It is an insult. Most of us have an image in mind at how Tonto should be--not one that looks like a savage about to cut open your chest and grab and eat your still beating heart.

However, I respect ones wishes to see it since it is entertainment--but im still opting out of watching it. I have not seen the newer version of Inglorious *******s either.

Default Lone Ranger

A work-mate and his wife saw a pre-release last night in Salt Lake City and told me this morning that it was good. Said Depp made an excellant Tonto.

My wife and I will see it with my sibblings in a few weeks. The group of us get together every Friday night for some kind of activity.

I've got this to say about that. The halting english the original Tonto spoke in is considered an insult to the Native community. However, Jay Silverheels is considered one of the greatest Native actors ever. He potrayal of Tonto was done with grace and intelligence, when it could have been done in a stereotypical, insulting way. A very memorable character. I'm personally not too crazy about Depps makeup and that silly looking bird on his head but his portrayal of Tonto is supposedly more accurate of the Comanche of the time.
Personally, I like the original series and I know I'll be comparing the two.

I think I saw a trailer with Hi-Yo Silver galloping across the top of a moving train, Lone Ranger aboard. That just might (if so) take this out of the traditional western category. Depp, despite his (affected) British sounding accent, was born in the great state of Kentucky....So...native American he may be, but British, he ain't.

Again with all due respect, you guys probably don't remember when the Lone Ranger was on radio. For years. I don't recall who played the Ranger first, but for many years a man named Brace Beemer was the voice. He was the one I remember most.

Tonto was played for a long time by a fine elderly character actor whose name I also don't recall. There's a story that once he lost track of the fact that Tonto and the Ranger were supposed to be indoors in a hotel, and said, "Gettum up, Scout!"

Moore and Silverheels were fine, but were Johnny-come-latelies; and the Ranger's back story was developed over a long time when radio was king.

On one hand, its a western and I wish they made a lot more of them, especially after the hilariously awful Cowboys and Aliens. On the other hand, after seeing the trailer of The Lone Ranger jumping a horse from a rooftop onto a moving train? Well, I know we are supposed to say its only a movie, but apparently I am supposed to believe the laws of physics are only guidelines here. If I want fantasy, I'll go see a science fiction movie. When I watch westerns, I want realism for the most part or at least the characters not to fly through the air when shot, or do things that are not physically possible.

There is a local retro type TV station here that ran the old Lone Ranger series. The very earliest ones were made in 1949. The Lone Ranger was played by William Hart who sounded much like the Dudley Do-Rite cartoon character. Moore showed up about a year later.

In the early 70's Clayton Moore lived in Golden Valley, MN. I worked for a utility company and had a service call at his house.

I remember a friendly guy and when I was leaving, he did "HI HO, Silver" for me in the Lone Rangers voice. But, shucks, I got no silver bullet.

I am interested in it and am glad to see a new big screen, big budget western. When I first heard about it I was very worried that they were going to camp it up into something goofy, but the trailers that I have seen suggest that they are mostly going to play it straight (it maybe a little over the top at times).

No, I don't take movies seriously at all, but I won't watch any that I think will not live up to what I think is entertaining, no matter what the previews show or what the talking heads say we should see, because they say it's good and "entertaining".

"No animals were harmed during the making of this film".

It's not dead, it took months to get that bird to do that!

And you can bet there won't be any shots of the back of Depp's head.

I'm personally not too crazy about Depps makeup and that silly looking bird on his head but his portrayal of Tonto is supposedly more accurate of the Comanche of the time.
Personally, I like the original series and I know I'll be comparing the two.
Ill be looking forward to reading your take on it. Im half Cherokee Indian myself--and I found no insults in the way Jay Silverheels portrayed Tonto. Also, I found no insult in the way that Chief Dan George-or even Chief Thundercloud--portrayed their characters in: The Outlaw Josey Wales as well as Ambush--with Robert Taylor. There are many other examples but I cant think of the Actors names just now ;-))

Chief Dan George I thought did an excellent job-same as Chief Thundercloud--in the few Westerns I saw him in.

IF one is to be insulted at portrayals of Indians? one would have to get angry with Anthony Quinn for the way he portrayed Chief Crazy horse in: They Died With Their Boots On w/ Errol Flynn. I love the movie even if it is comical. Also, there is that "thing" that people have where John Wayne pulled the pin of a Grenade with his teeth in some war movie--when in fact--he never did. However, Anthony Quinn did that at least twice in the movies: Back To Bataan and The Guns of Navarone.

Sorry about going off topic a bit but just saying

PS, I am a big fan of Anthony Quinn. Another who was as I thought--great as an Indian--was Italian Actor: Anthony Caruso.

I cant remember exactly but--it was either the first three TV episodes-or maybe just the 4th? that featured a young Deforrest Kelley (Dr. McCoy of Star Trek) fame. You could tell from day one-that TV show was going to be good-very good.

I'm sure at some point I will see it. However I won't spend the seven
bucks to see it at a first run theater. Maybe the Value theater that
charges two bucks or the dollar and half to rent it at Red Box. I can
wait. Oh and the seven bucks at the first run is the senior citizen
price. If I paid regular adult it would be nine. No way!!!

I guess I shoulda said an insult to some in the Native community. I found no insult either and enjoy watching Native actors and watching comical portrayals. The one that came to my mind was the Hekawi tribe on Ftroop and big chief Ugh Amug Ugh on a Popeye cartoon. I thought they were hilarious.
I'm looking forward to reading my take on it too.
There was also Italian American Espera Oscar de Corti who was better known as Iron Eyes Cody.

That has to be one of the strangest stories in the history of impersonations of Native folks. From what I've read he stayed in character nearly all the time until shortly before his death. Don't know if he attended powwows or not. That could have been just a touch awkward. Or maybe not.

I think nearly everyone who didn't know the truth (meaning damn near everyone in the country) was convinced and moved by the "crying Indian" PSA.

Pity, that. IMO, all of the main characters were better portrayed in the newer version.

YMMV, though.

Anyone
would have been better than Glen Campbell in the original. Marcel Marceau would have been better than Glen Campbell.

From the clips I saw, Bridges was wonderful in the role; but Bridges is an actor who plays characters, not one who plays himself in every flick.

Boy, am I going to get flamed for that one!

I don't disagree.....but I recently watched the "Mark of Zorro" and the scene where Zorro is caught on the bridge between two groups of soldiers is pretty unbelievable. Whoever that stunt guy was that jumped ,then rode that horse, what looked like at least eighty feet off that bridge into the river should have got some kind of an award. Amazing! I came up out of the chair yelling.

As far as the bird on Deep's head; isn't that authentic Comanche/plains Indian war dress?

Not from me. The remake of True Grit was ten times the movie the original was.
John Wayne was good...at playing John Wayne.
