400 million dollar powerball
I'm feeling really lucky this week. I survived prostate cancer. I'm feeling way better than I have in years. I would like to hit the power ball.
What would you do with it?
For me;
1. A new log cabin on my land in Vt.
2. A place on a lake.
3. Add a monster garage to our new place.
4. An indoor shooting range with heat and air Connditioning. Build a state of the art 100yard range.
5. Help troubled kids
6. Help the terminially I'll kids
7. Buy land for hunting, fishing, off road riding.
8. Buy a place in Wells, Maine area.
With 400 million that's a lot of s&w' s. I'd be like the duck dynasty guys still down to earth and rich.

I'd get me a bigger trailer - Maybe even a nice double wide (if that's enough money to get a nice one).
Then I'd give my moma my old trailer so she wouldn't have to sleep in her car anymore. And hardly even charge her much rent.

Some years ago, a man won the Illinois lottery, for like $100 million. He drove a trash truck for the city, and they asked him if he was going to quit his job...he said no, he only had two years left until he could get his pension.
If I won $400 million, I'd probably net around $200 million or so after taxes. After tithe (my preacher would be happy to see me that Sunday!) and gifts to my kids, I'd still have about $100 million. That's still an enormous amount of money...invested, I wonder what that would draw in interest? Maybe $8 to $10 million a year? Why, a man could probably live on that.

This came up before. My answer is still the same. It probley would make me mad at this late date in my life down the knoted rope. I would travel some and see scattered old friends and family. Buy me that side by side atv, a few other things but at this late date I doubt it would change my personnal life all that much. We have everything we need, but I havent travaled like I thought we would as my wife is almost 17 years younger and I want to be sure she can have a life after I check out. If it was just me I would be spending my ira more and doing things. Belive me, the older you get the more the rules change.

I'm not going to worry about it, as I have never bought a lottery ticket.
Nice to think about for a second, but I just can't bring myself to give a penny to the Italian syndicate running the lottery in most states. (Most lotteries are handled by foreign companies, or an American division of those companies) Either way, money goes back to the syndicate, or I mean parent company.
Why the feds haven't had a reason to go after the money before now is beyond me. Must be paying all the taxes on it and then some.
I think I will go have a chance on the punch board at the gas station for a new rifle though.

I buy lottery tickets often. It's a cheap way to have a little fun day dreaming. What would I do if I hit it big?
Give some
Spend some
Save some

First thing I would do is disconnect my phone. Then see a tax attorney and my broker. Invest it is a variety of things and set up a trust to keep my children and grandchildren in enough they wouldn't have to worry. then set up a trust for an amount to go to my church annually with the balance distributed after our deaths. Then with what is left, maybe 100 million or so, set it up in investments to give me a nice comfortable lining, maybe a half million a year. Would I move, only if I was forced to by greedy beggars constantly asking for money. Would I take vacations? First to Europe for several weeks traveling around Germany, France, Italy, England, etc. Yeah, I would buy a few guns, and some nice ones, but I don't want 1,000 guns, I already have more than I can keep up with shooting. Last but not least would be a nice fat chunk to Lee to keep the Forum running.

If you have $100 million to invest, even a 5% return will earn $5 million a year...and you should be able to get much better than 5% with that much money. You might net $2 million a year after all taxes (depending on where you live, and I'm no tax expert...just guessing.) That's approximately $167,000 a month to live on, and you'd still have the principle amount in reserve. Unless you live like a rock star or a movie star, anyone should be able to live very, very well on $167 K a month!
Why, you might even be able to afford some ammo...

First priority would be some acreage and maybe fifty or a hundred head of sheep to keep my hyperactive Aussie, Tusker, busy and out of mischief. If a guy could shoot and ride dirt bikes on it too, that would be a bonus. Some new shock absorbers for my Ranger.

First I would disappear. My kids and siblings and maybe a couple of very close friends would be the only ones who knew how to reach me.
Then, since I'm almost 76, I'd give damn near all of it away pretty quickly. Although it would be tempting to buy a boatload of S&W stock so I could persuade them to make some changes and resume manufacturing the 15, the 19, and a few other goodies.

I left out the misses and the three kids and the grandson. I want him to go to Yale or Harvard.

Then I would fix up our Church to bring it up to date from the 80's Then I would have Smith and Wesson make a new revolver in an unique chamber and by every Smith Owner one So they could think about all the interest I was making and not feel to bad The I would donate a boat load of it to charity making it my job to make sure it all went to the right place and not through the admin process.

To the OP...
We have a problem! My daughter came home today and gave me - what she said - the winning ticket!!!
Now, the missus and I were talking last week about how much fun we could have giving most of it away......it would be a real hoot to send my old buddy in Arizona a couple of million............then we have off-spring scattered around the country.............a few relatives here and there. It would just be fun.........hey, I couldn't actually "spend" 200 million dollars!!! I'm too old to even try!!

It is not really imaginable when you really think about it, but at best, my biggest fantasy would be to by a few thousand acres and be able to do what I wanted on it. I would hire the best teachers for my three little ones and make sure they were put in the best position to succeed. Make sure my closest family and friends were taken care of and buy a deuce and a half and a dump truck, well, just because!

First of all it is not a cash number. It is a prorated payout number. To get the cash value you have to do a present day value of a future income stream calculation, which usually goes out to bidders. I would guess you end up with roughly 2/3 of the 400 million. Then the IRS wants their 1/3 of that. So I would guess you end up with roughly 170 million +or- 10 million or so for a final pay out in after tax dollars, less any state taxes.
Then you have to figure there will be 5 or 6 winners so divide that by say 5 or 6 and and you might walk away with 30 million or so. Its called lottery math.
Still that should keep some of us in razor blades for a while.

I would donate it to the US Government to help reduce the deficient hoping that it would serve as an example to millions of Americans and inspire them to voluntarily give up their tax refunds for the same purpose.
Uh; on second thought I guess I would just spend it on stuff I don't need

My "hobbies" could actually start paying for themselves, and I would build the things "I" want, not what some company thinks they need.

I would look at Alaska for a homestead and have a hunting guide service.
I was thinking of hunting in every state. I'm retired so I may need to put together some buddies to go with me.
