Default Dawgs and Skunk don't mix!

Ask a fellow sitting here getting a headache off the smell anything.
No, he didn't just get sprayed, he killed it.
I've NEVER seen such single minded determination, it came onto our property and it was on.
The wife is out of town, so me and the dog were sitting out back when he saw it, bit once got sprayed, bit and shook it and got sprayed, shook it to death and wouldn't let go.
Poor guy looked and acted like he was pepper sprayed, runny eyes, sneezing, and puked up whatever he'd eaten/drank.
What a mess, now I've got to take him to the Vet tomorrow (today) for a booster shot and get the darn Skunk checked for rabies.
I'm torn between thanking him for a good job of guarding, and worrying if he'll be OK.
He's up to date on his shots thankfully.
In the mean time we're sitting here drinking a few beer (yes he loves beer) and spending some quality time.
Yes Animal Control was called, and the poor guy is now on lock down, no visitors for the near future till this gets resolved.
No, he hasn't learned his lesson, I let him out again and he was right away on the hunt for another tasty morsel.
Man, this better not turn into an Old Yeller situation.

ETA:
Anyone Veterinarian savvy wants to shed some light on what happens now, I'd be more than interested.
Good, Bad, Ugly, whatever, I would like some facts, not conjecture.

Skunk removal

See post #16 for cleaning the dog. You need help and information, all I got is sympathy. When Momma comes home it will really hit the fan.

Growing up in a very wooded area , it seemed my Husky would tangle with a skunk or groundhog every week or so.

just moved into a house. the old guy next door, 7 yrs. my junior, feeds the feral cats in the area. he told me it has been drawing a skunk to the pan all summer. haven't seen the S yet, but he walks between the houses once in a while. have to close the windows. the other night my wife said the cat and the S were fighting around the pan. glad he didn't spray. showed him an article about feral cats that was in the paper sunday, said he won't feed them!! but he has told me that 3 times already.

Just hope the skunk is negative. My neighbor's cat got attacked by a rabid raccoon and even though his shots were up to date he was on lock down for 45 days. He was an outdoor cat and was one miserable fella.

That formula is basically Oxyclean. Same stuff, that's how to make your own.

I had a squirrel dog years ago in Texas that hated skunks with a passion. She couldn't resist lighting in to them every chance she got. Best cure I ever found was good old tomato juice. I can't count the times I had to do that. Best thing I ever found for killing that stench. Just souse 'em down in tomato sauce or juice then shampoo them when your done..

Hopefully your dog will be ok. When a skunk moves about in daylight, they usually have a problem because they are night animals for the most part. Hope he wasn't rabid.

In the '90s I had 3 dogs. A Yellow Lab, a small Poodle mix, and a Heinz 57 that was about the size of a Coyote and in a dog fight I would pick him to win. I had skunks coming thru the area where they lived just ever so often and they would let me know and I would shoot them. Problem solved for a while until Beaumont (the Heinz 57) got to killing and gutting the skunks. Twice I had to beat him off of the skunks with a long handle shovel. Once he had a skunk he was not going to let go till he killed him. One skunk had a hold of the face of Ernie ( the small poodle mix) and Beaumont was trying to shake the skunk and every time he would cut loose to shake him it was like a train because the skunk had a good hold of the other dog and it was pretty funny later. I never had a good method for bathing the dogs after being sprayed and used everything from Tomato juice and soap and mostly they wore it off. To me up close and personal a skunk smell a little different after they have been torn to pieces. Don't get me wrong it is still very bad, but different.

All my dogs had their rabies shots but I still had to send 2 skunks heads to get them checked for rabies. Those dogs have been gone for years and I sure miss them. They kept me busy sometimes.

I hope you get a good report on your dog.

Your spelling is excellent: a critter that would tear up a skunk that way is not a mere "dog", he's a bona fide, honest-to-God dawg. I have one that weighs fifteen pounds. Rat terrier. I call him "the micro-mastiff", when I'm not calling him "you goofy mutt".

A true dawg is a wonderful thing.

Shouldazagged that's what my squirrel dog was. A rat terrier with an attitude. He was the kids house dawg indoors and always guarded the kids faithfully from any and everybody but out doors he was a different critter al together. Like your dawg he would deal a skunk the worst possible grief he could and not back off. Bring backs some memories of days gone by. Popper

Well, got with Animal Control which is going to have the Skunk tested, this happened about 10pm so I ended up giving dawg a bath about 11 last night.
The peroxide/baking powder worked, he smells fine, but I have no idea how to decontaminate the house!
I had to get him away from the carcass, and since the shed was too far I threw him in my study where he rolled and rubbed on the carpet, my chair, and anything else he could.
So now he's the only thing that doesn't smell of skunk.
Can't wait till the wife gets back from Texas and gets a whiff of the house.

That is a nice looking dawg. The smell in the house should slowly dissipate at least it did when one of mine got spray and odorized the entire house.

Actually, my holy terrier, Moose, hasn't tangled with a skunk since I've had him (he's a middle-aged rescue dog who adopted me a couple of years ago). But he's great at keeping rogue rhinos away--I haven't seen one since he moved in and took over.

I think most of the terriers think they're Danes.
