Default Brady Campaign state rankings

I mentioned on another thread that I have homes in two states that bracket the Brady state rankings.

California, my primary residence, with the most restrictive gun laws.

And Arizona where I grew up, with the least restrictive.

FWIW here is a link to the complete table.

The People's Republic of California is Number 1, and the proposed new anti-gun restrictions will make it even better. I am so proud. To celebrate California's ranking, I think I'll just beat on my toes with a ballpeen hammer. I just wish Nevada was farther down on the list, but as a future refugee from California, Nevada is a haven of freedom.

In 2011 Mississippi was tied at 39th with nine other states. Open carry, stand your ground(is this figured in?) and a few other things have been enacted since then so I suspect we will move down in this poll. That's a good thing. The states with the worse gun laws have the highest crime rates. I've had many criminals tell me they try not to pick a victim who may be armed. Having the right to just "show" a potential criminal a gun without getting arrested is a huge crime deterrent. The gun grabbing libtards make laws and regulations that make absolutely no sense. For example, how many drive-bys have you seen committed with a M1 Garand? Taking guns away from non-criminals causes crime to go up.

I'm appalled that three states south of the Mason-Dixon received "stars."

I am very upset that Georgia was so close to getting a star.
We have never had any anti-gun legislation come to the floor of the Georgia legislature- sure, some lunatics come up with idears..but they never even get to the floor.

We've got to work on getting back to the bottom.

I knew the usual suspects, but NC being up there kinda threw me a curve...must be their Jim Crow era pistol-permit system.

Nevada only ranks as high as it does for these reasons

1) In the 60s the mob wanted to know who else in town had guns, so Clark and Washoe Counties got a useless and poorly administered handgun registration scheme. I think it has solved one murder since 1965.

2) Nevada trumpets being a low tax state, so it makes up the shortfall in lots of fees. The fees for a CHL renewal are daylight robbery compared with most others and the renewal frequency is higher, too.

3) Nevada has no "Stand your ground" statute as such, but it is a VERY rare thing for a homeowner or anybody else to be prosecuted for shooting a goblin. I cannot recall one case in 16 years, and some of the circumstances looked pretty flaky for the shooter.

4) Nevada has a 72 hour wait period for your FIRST handgun. Oooh.

Nice to see Utah has a zero rating. I have often thought of retiring to St George.

I am upset about Georgia's ranking, too. It is a bit puzzling to me since the last gun legistation to pass actually loosened CCW rules a bit.

That is one of the reasons i left Colorado for South Dakota!! If I didn't have family here, I would gladly head for Texas or Arizona!!

I'm surprised IL is only a 2 star rating.

It depends on where you live. Here in Henderson there's no three day wait, whether it's your first of fiftieth purchase. I don't believe there's a wait in northern NV either. I think it's limited to the city of L.V., and possibly N.L.V.

Haha, Zero points for Alaska, Arizona, and Utah.
That's only because they couldn't give us negative ratings.

Oklahoma got 2 points? How did that happen? We'll have to work on getting rid of those

I am shockingly disappointed in Alabama. Then again, this might not take into account the recent change to allowing open carry, shall issue, and honoring every other state's CCW permit or license.

How Vermont, which requires no permit for anything got so many points is a mystery.

Tennessee should be much lower on their list. Other than binding signage, TN is very gun friendly. Texas is far more restrictive and yet gets more points.

We have a lot of work to do until all states are rated at 0 by the Brady Dopes.

You can't depend upon a brady-ite to tell the truth... Maine at 25th? I hardly think so. Gun-wise, we are largely still a free people here.

As I recall, ME is shall issue, no permit needed to buy, open carry OK. I've never seen any place posted no guns either for that matter.

I wouldn't be too upset over those rankings. Look at the bottom who compiled them. Who knows what formula and numbers they used!?
I see Va. As 19 and 1 star but we are shall issue and open carry. I suspect most of Va. Figures came from the D.C. Area which is a whole 'nother planet up there!

Texas SHOULD be at zero. Ive not seen nor heard anything legislation-wise--coming from our folks in Austin--that is negative towards guns and such. That one is a head-scratcher (scratch scratch scratch) .

I disagree. No open carry, binding signage, a shooting proficiency test, and of course a written test.

All of those will add points for the Brady people. As I've said before, I'm all for training. What I'm not for is a training/testing requirement to exercise a Constitutional Right.

Good points. Open Carry is currently somewhere in the process of passing and in Texas should have almost no chance to fail. Gov Perry already said--as well as others like Gregg Abbott and such--said it would be signed. I cant say anything on the rest of what you said as ive never encountered testing on anything dealing with the 2nd Amendment--only testing as it goes when i was training for State Law Enforcement.

I CAN see and support for testing for Concealed Carry. I would hate to see a slew of those out there with CC-who don't know their butts from a hole-in-the-ground.

I found the detailed scorecard. You can look at how points were given to each state specifically.

http://bradycampaign.org/sites/defau...2%20Sheet1.pdf

I was curious how Kentucky had 2 points against it. Hated not coming in at the very bottom of that list. lol. They give 2 points for banning guns on college campuses, which is the strike against us. You can look there to see how they dinged your state.

I keep hoping kentucky will get rid of the college ban but colleges are very powerful politically in Kentucky and universities are full of hippie liberals who don't like guns, so it's going to be tough.

Alaska and Arizona, both 0 states, have it too, but they both got a minus 2 points for allowing concealed carry without a permit. Apparently with Brady that's a big no no, they only have two "demerit" categories and that's one of them. Bad states, no no.

In fact with that chart you can re-score your state for the changes mentioned on the thread.

Washington’s 15 points must come from the state’s computerized record of FFL handgun sales and ban on federally registered full autos. Granted the Democrats have a strangle hold on state politics, but gun control is the third rail most of them won’t touch. We have open carry, shall issue concealed pistol licenses, no waiting period with a CPL, licensed parents and adults who have business on K-12 school grounds can carry there, an unregulated non-FFL market, no permit required to buy, no registration of guns and state preemption of gun laws.

That last item, state preemption, is all important. It’s not just that the Seattle City Council would out law guns if it could. State preemption eliminates the risk of being charged with a felony by West Under Shirt which had not even incorporated the last time you drove through. Those of you who don’t have state preemption should work for it.

Digressing to the topic of Seattle, their recent ban on guns in parks and public places was tossed out in court because it violated state preemption. The mayor won’t quit. He was on the news a few days ago urging businesses to voluntarily post their premises no guns allowed. He wants the city to provide the signs for free.

It could be the Brady rating comes more from the state’s reputation than the reality of our laws.

Edit to add: After posting I see bluegrassarms’ link to how Brady scored states. Its so small I can’t read it nor can I enlarge it.

I take the above slightly back--there as far as I am aware? have been no laws saying one could NOT open carry here. I used to (before getting into Law Enforcement) open carry in a smaller City I grew up in--and nobody batted an eyelash. Where I live now--since most here dont open carry--they might call in the SWAT team as well as the Marines.

Oddly they don't do much with concealed carry, other than a 2 point demerit for not requiring a permit for concealed carry. Really it's kinda flawed as a measure of being "gun friendly" b/c it focuses a LOT on records and tracking, less on carry.

Texas got dinged 4 points. Two for the ban on college campues, 2 for some kind of age restriction law that isn't clear on that chart. Does Texas have some kind of lock law for homes with children?

I know that there is legislation churning it's way through the legislature, but I think it's been defeated in the past.

From the Constitutional purist point of view any testing requirement comes with the potential to be abused. I liken it to literacy tests for being able to vote. Too much room for abuse in the wrong hands.

Again--good point but--here in Texas-most of our Politicians have something that many outside the State do not--it's called: Common Sense.

Im certainly no know-it-all-nor an expert on laws but-do know they have here at least a few "common sense" laws on the books.

One that gets me that is still on the list of laws in that little City I once lived in has been on the books since 1915. The law states: "It is against the law for two pigs to have sex on the street." Yes--that IS an actual law still on their books there.

I knew I liked utah for something. I am still loose. I was in denneys a hour ago. A couple got up and I noticed he was packing. They had nice harleys and he was a fit skun head so maybe he could have been leo, couldnt make out the hawg plates but I noticed they were tourists as he was pointing around the mountain range to his wife or GF as they fired up. He had no class though as he was packing a probable glock that was balanced on the other side with a couple mags.

Well, since these are 2011 rankings, we can always hope we get worse. Maybe Georgia can tie my other state, Florida for 41st or even farther down.

well, we got 2 points cause of the law forbidding carry on colleges. But hey-tied for 47th plus our great fishing and hunting is a winning combination fer sure.

Nebraska has 5 points...must be the requirement to have a purchase permit from the sheriff (w/requisite background check)

Indeed. I was a bit displeased to see good old Indiana got 4-points in the deal. I have no idea why? At least we didn't get a star!

Looking around in the also-starless category, I took some comfort in seeing that Indiana keeps pretty good company (in this case).
