a couple of friends recommended Howard Leight R-0526 impact sport earmuffs and I ordered a set. Have any of ya'll ever had any experience with these. I know they have to be better than ear plugs when shooting a .357 under one of those roofs at the range. I hope they work good.

When I was at the range a gentleman recommended those but I haven't ordered any yet. I will be looking coward to your range report and others opinions that may have them as well.

I've used them for a few years and much prefer them over the Peltor model I had previously.
They're inexpensive, they work very well, only take one set of batteries, and they don't interfere with shooting a rifle.

You may find they don't work as well in a place where the sound will bounce back at you- the attenuation is measured in milliseconds, and sometimes it won't keep up in an enclosed shooting situation. But, I have a couple of sets (different brands) and would buy them again. Being able to hear very well between shots is worth it.

Use plugs with them if you need to, and remember, you can always turn them off.

Final observation- they get better the more you spend, generally.

I looked into the electronic models a few yeas back but went with standard ones since the best electronic muffs did not come close to the Db noise reduction that the standard models do. I went with the Peltor Ultimate 10 which deliver 29 Db noise reduction (on their own) and that coupled with the soft rubber plug type (-26 Db) is about the best protection I can get. Unfortunately, I acted too late in life and lost too much of my hearing before I got aggressive enough, but like they say, better late than never!

I own the impact sports as does my son. I wear them inside and out. You may find that you still want foam ear plugs in addition when using a .357 indoors.

I have a pair of HL's (don't know the model) and they work very well. I only shoot outside so can't comment their. The only time I add foam plugs is when shooting .44 mag. It took me a little to get used to a .22 and a .357 sounding the same through the headphones.

I've had a pair for about 3 years now, and can say they are fine. I shot trap and skeet and indoor bullseye. I previously had a pair of Browning that were made in England. Headband broke after only 8 or 9 years. The HL's work as well, but are a little deeper and I will occasionally hit my shotgun stock on the bottom edge of the muff. I have fired heavy caliber rifles with muzzle breaks from under a roof, and didn't need any additional plugs etc.

I have used these muffs for three years now and really like them. A couple of years ago while being fitted for hearing aides I had them make me some custom plugs, I thought that would take care of all situations. Outside I can usually get by with just the plugs, but inside I use both.

Several years ago, I got a Walker's Game Ear set
of headphones. I have been VERY happy with them
both for range work and deer hunting. They have a directional
set of microphones, (quads), and are comfortable for extended
use.
When hunting, the headphones give me back the
level of hearing I had before guns, open exhaust, and
industrial racket.
That said, I never go anywhere w/o earplugs on me.

Well, I got them and I like them just fine. Since my hearing is getting pretty bad the 357 ain't loud to me at all. The mikes pick up things I'm not used to hearing like crows and crickets. I hope they help me to hear a big buck this season. Thank you all for your input.

I have 'em, and they work fine, but I also use ear plugs at the same time.

I have a pair and don't like them. They work OK, but on a busy range you might as well just wear regular muffs. Plus, plugs are better at canceling noise than muffs.

I have a pair of Sport Ear electronic plugs. They are expensive, but if you teach or are at the range a lot, they can't be beat.
