Exciting beach day
The wife and I were enjoying a perfect beach day. After a relaxing swim in the 87 degree water, I was standing on the beach and spotted a fever of stingrays swim by. As I watched them pass I saw a man begin to thrash about in the water. Not sure if he was just playing around, I started wading into the water. I got in about knee deep when his head suddenly went under under the surface! He popped back up flailing and screaming for help. By that time I was charging out as fast as I could, the look of sheer panic on his face pushed me even harder. Another gentleman had followed me out and we both grabbed him and pulled him to safety. After thanking us he noticed my dog tags and asked if I was a vet. I told him I was Navy and he stated that he was former Army, then with an embarrassed laugh he said "they didn't teach us to swim in the Army" I replied "that's odd taught us to march in the Navy". He thanked us again and quickly left the beach. More than enough excitement for one day!

And I guess you weren't at a beach in Alaska with 87 deg water.
Anyway a good deed on your part and probably a life saved. I give you a good pat on the back and a atta boy. Glad he didn't take you down with him. Also I guess no lifeguard in that area.

He was swimming around fine for some time, I think he just went past the sand bar, realized he could no longer touch bottom and panicked. Some people shouldn't be swimming in open water.

Saaaaay! Does this mean we get to have a "what's the best caliber for Stingray" thread? I don't think that's been done before!

Aloha,
Here in Hawaii, it has been a Bad year(so far) for people in the ocean.
We have had about a Dozen shark Attacks(on locals and tourists) and a bunch of Drownings (mostly tourists).
Just too many people in the water.

I've seen people who can swim (sorta) but can't tread water or even 'drownproof'.
Oddly enough I work with a former Marine (airedale) who deployed on an LPH and says he can't swim!

Well done, sir. You were a guardian angel for that fellow, you know. I have no doubt that God placed you in that spot, at that time, and with level of attentiveness. How does it feel to have been His instrument?

Glad you weren't worried about the stingray's getting you while you saved the struggling person. I was curious if the person even realized the stingray's were in the area and that might of panicked him?

I grew up in the Clearwater area before Sand Key was destroyed. Used to be a great "parking" area The Shark fishing was great!!!
You gotta learn to do the Stingray Shuffle
Rays will not hurt you unless you step right on them.

Funny you say that, this happened at Sand Key. I have the shuffle down! I've kicked a couple of rays and have seen two sharks swim within several feet of me, but no problems.

Sometimes when we would go shark fishing with big Penn 6-0 or 9-0 reels, harness, rods with roller guides we would hook some giant rays. They would go down on the sandy bottom and more or less suction themselves down on the bottom. It was like trying to pull up an anchor. When the lost their "grip" they would stream out a hundred yards of line. Even as young, strong guys it was exhausting. We caught some REALLy big rays. Not those little ones like on the beach. Caught some big sharks also.
