Default Why did the rabbit climb the tree?

Since we moved to Highlands Ranch, CO we've been forced into peaceful co-existence with the local rabbits. We now watch them for entertainment. This morning while eating breakfast my wife saw one of them (we think it is the one we named JR) stretching up to the lower limbs of a dwarf fir tree. He suddenly pulled himself up inside! My wife ran for her camera and we watched as the tree shook. A leg appeared as he tried not to fall out and then he was just as quickly back on the ground. He hopped around a bit in the walking park behind the house. He then returned to the tree and climbed back up. The tree was much more still this time and after several minutes he made a controlled descent back to the ground. He sniffed at another tree but it seemed like he wanted to return to the first tree. Something in the park scared him though and he ran under our sunroom. These are dwarf fir trees (exact type unknown) with the lowest branches trimmed off so they don't interfere with the grass sprinklers. This one is a little less than 6' tall with about 18" trimmed bare at the bottom. I can't imagine the tree having any sort of food source, so why did the rabbit climb the tree?

Something smelled like food? I used to be a die hard rabbit hunter between fishing and deer hunting. They were all over the foothills and then, about 15 years ago the numbers dropped off. They've all moved to the suburbs!

That's simple. The dog likes tomato's. Ill grant you a tomato loving dog is somewhat odd maybe, I don't know. My Lab loves bananas. People think I'm joking but she can be sound asleep and if you peel a banana anywhere in the house her nose twitches and she's beside you begging in less then a second.

Several years ago there was a humerous video circulating of some rabbits being disturbed and climbing into some Juniper type trees and the culprit turned out to be a rattler. It has been a long time but I think the rabbits harrassed the snake into fleeing.

Maybe you can get him together with Deathgrip's dog. He like tomatos too & they could trade recipes.

I try to contribute here when I can, though I would never swear to the accuracy,but,.. I'll not let questionable accuracy stop me from commenting on this rabbit fact. An old rabbit hunter just told me last week that rabbit population works on a seven year cycle.
. His "factoid" was relayed when I complained that coyotes were decimating our rabbit population...Nope, says he, yotes are too lazy to hunt rabbits, way too many house cats and poodle dogs to waste time chasing a rabbit...Oh, next time I see the rabbit expert I will ask about the tree climbing type.
I bet money he has an answer, though not necessarily a true one.

We had a black cat named Boo and he loved cantaloupe. No matter where he was if we started cutting one up, he was in the kitchen sitting by the counter begging for some. He would not eat tomatoes or bananas though.

I know of lots of dogs that like tomatoes some much that they take all the ones from the garden. Just heard another story like that yesterday. I think every dog we have had loved bananas, and my Dad taught Tiny to eat oranges many years ago.

Something must have given that rabbit an incentive - my guess a scent of something desirable.

Rabbit populations do run in cycles and that cycle is influenced by coyotes. I have thick brush behind my house that is currently full of wild rabbits. The coyotes will move in, I'll hear the howling, and then find lots of coyote poop full of rabbit hair and no more rabbits. Then it happens again next year. If I can kill a yote or two I'll have some rabbits to hunt after the first frost. At one time I had 14 rabbit dogs. (beagles) It can't be much more fun than this. The yotes and bobcats have taken a rabbit hunt from 15 to 20 killed to two or three, if you're lucky.

neighbor has a couple hunting dogs that love tomatoes..
last year they raided the garden of several large tomatoes, he puts them in air conditioned garage due to heat.
i hear him yelling like he found someone in bed with his wife, look out to see him cursing the dogs.
walk over to see that the dogs have had a digestive issue with the tomatoes . i have never seen a dog projectile poop like that before... it took him a day to clean up the mess.

i witnessed a rabbit climbing a tree once, but it was trying to get away from the kids at an easter egg hunt and was about 6 foot tall

Default Welcome to Highlands Ranch

We've been living here since '86 and have dealt with all kinds of wildlife since then......coyotes, deer, skunk, bear, mountain lion, raccoon, fox and that's just the four legged variety. There's also the winged version....various hawks, eagles (including Bald) and some really big owls, one of which has recently started hanging out in our neighborhood looking for small game. Do you back up to the open space? If you have lots of rabbits in your neighborhood you can be sure there are a lot of other critters around too. Be careful with your pets if you have any.

I sent this to my brother who is a veterinarian. He immediately cited the Monty Python badass bunny. Once he got serious he said the only possible reason is that the rabbit thought there was a food source in the tree. I thought about looking in the tree but I'm afraid of what I might find. I could understand if someone had stuffed a Big Mac in the tree and a dog in the walking park smelled it, but what could a rabbit smell in a fir tree??? BTW, rabbits love sweet potato leaves.

Here is a picture of the rabbit. All of the other images are video and I can't upload them here (32 mb). I think I could it I could zip it but I can't figure out how.

We've seen single coyotes and a mating pair calling in their pups (at least that's what google told us what their yipping and coughing meant). Our wildlife camera also caught a night time image of a raccoon.

No, but I could use a couple of Bugs Bunny cartoons from the '50's right now. Maybe a Roadrunner or two.

I do envy people who live where they can see more wild critters than I can, now that I can no longer hunt or just walk the woods.

Zip is easy on a Mac and only slightly harder on windows. 7zip is a free utility for compressing and decompressing zip files. No sure what the limit on uploading here is but better might be some external video sharing site of editing if possible to either shorten and reduce the movie for web viewing.
