The World Health Organization released “Murder Statistics” for the world.

ALL the countries (109) above the United States of America have 100% GUN
BANS. It might be of interest to note that Switzerland (not shown on this
list) had NO MURDER OCCURRENCE! However, Switzerland issues every adult a
gun and requires training/marksman qualifications.

Great stats, thanks for posting this.

While it's true we have a spectacularly low murder rate- your information on gun bans is not even close to correct. a great many of those nations have mild gun laws for citizens who can afford to pay for the right to have firearms. And, for many of them, there simply ARE no viable gun laws to be followed. Guns are in general not allowed in the cities, in businesses and the like (Similar to the US) but there are no restrictions on firearms outside the cities. Some have actually stronger gun ownership laws than Switzerland and Texas. You want to play with your very own AK? Pakistan is just a switch of religion away. Want a grenade launcher? A REAL ONE?! Anyplace with the word 'Republic' on the tail end of it, or any 'stan' country will not stand in your way, so long as you do not turn your oversize fireworks on the host nation.

In the end, it does remind you that we hold a high moral and legal standard in our society; even with its' failings. Still the brightest shining star of freedom in our universe.......

Some of those places may have LEGISLATED gun bans but it means little, especially in Africa.

All the same those stats look odd in a few areas. First of all the Caribbean Islands look to be extremely violent, but Zimbabwe seems rather low compared with its neighbour, South Africa. I mean Zimbabwe is shown with a LOWER rate than Greenland. Do we believe that?

I question the validity of some of those figures, and the UK and other major nations are not there. Is Argentina? Guns are allowed, but I doubt their murder rate is especially high.

Some of those countries do allow gun ownership. I know I saw Brazil and Uruguay there, among others. But it remains that some of the worst there are those banning guns. Not only do criminals flaunt those laws, but machetes, clubs, etc. are often used.

South Africa allows guns, but has far lower murder rates than some other, more oppressive. nations. The Oscar Pistorious case aside, most gun murders there are probably with illegal guns.

There are barely more than 50,000 people in Greenland. Which means that if there is a single murder in any given year that is a murder rate of 2 per 100,000. And if there are only two murders in a given year the rate per 100,000 just jumped to 4.

Yep; Chicago has them covered. And Detroit has Chicago's back!!!

The OPs point is well taken, most poor; third world countries have high violent crime rates, however these stats just don't seems right to me, example: North Korea 15.2/100,000. I find it hard to belive the North Korean will report these number to the WHO.

As a matter of fact, I can't find any murder stats at the WHO site, however there is a United Nation Office of Drug and Crime which compile murder stats, data are from 1995-2011, the North Korean isn't listed, here is the link.

The access to firearm has very little impact on murder rate, since most of the murders in the world are commited with other means, sharp objects; blunt force; suffocations...etc.

Here's a critical look at them.

The U.S. figure is approximately correct and the 2012 FBI Uniform Crime Report (latest I could find) pegs the murder rate at 4.8 per 100,000 population.

It may well be that leads to the assumption the other numbers are "approximately" correct and there aren't many places one can find such a comparison. I couldn't find any except those referencing the same suspect source.

On a slightly related subject. Some years ago a college professor in Missouri worked hard and got permission to exhume the remains of 100 men that were recorded in local history as "Bad Men". The results were, over 90 of the men died of blunt force trauma to the head! Yet the death certificates were correct; It is only natural that a beaten woman would bash you head in while you were passed out in a drunken stupor. The above stats don't begin to reveal the number of "Natural" deaths out there. In the Soviet Union, it is reported that the death certificates of government executions performed by the KGB et al. were listed as heart failure/natural causes-after all a bullet in the brain causes the heart to stop, naturally. At least here in the US, there are a few steps you can take to greatly reduce the odds that you will meet a violent death:

• Don't commit crimes
• Don't associate with criminals
• Don't deal drugs
• Don't use drugs

There are probably a lot of others, but you get the drift. For people who follow these steps, the rate probably falls off to much, much less than 1 per 100,000.

There is no guarantee you will not be the victim of a violent act, but you can sure improve your chances.

Who knows what to believe? Recently there was a thread that stated that the U.S. was third in the world as far as murders. But if Chicago, Detroit, Washington DC & New Qrleans were factored out, then the U.S. was fourth from the bottom of the list. No mention as to the total count on the list(every country in the world?)& if it was from gun violence or any kind of weapon.

I find it extremely difficult to believe that Mexico's murder rate is only 16.9 per 100,000. It's not just along the U.S border that the cartels slaughter people simply to keep the populace terrified.

The UK is lower than the USa and this relationship has existed from before the UK's restrictive gun laws. Some violent crime is actually higher in the UK than the USA. Also the UK and the USA report homicides in very different ways so the data isn't really comparible.

One thing that is interesting is the USA's rate is declining while (I believe) the UK's rate is increasing.

As stated many countries have technical bans on private ownership of firearms but it is not enforced for everyone. This is probably true to a greater or lesser extent everywhere.

In these 3rd world countries, most folks are still born at home, and there is no birth registry that is required as is now the case in the US. So, if you never existed, and you wind up missing....... who and how would they ever count you to know if you were murdered, or just fell into the river and drowned?

In reality, the murder rates are MUCH HIGHER in many of these countries. There is just no way to verify the deaths, let alone verify a murder, and even tougher to figure a death by gun vs. death by a dozen other ways.

And, having been down there..... Belize, Panama, Costa Rica are not the little havens people believe they are. Take a hike away from the resort, and see how things change......

I tried to impress that on a couple I know who went to Jamaica. Fortunately, they got back okay, but didn't wander far from their hotel. They also enjoyed a Mexican trip.

My brother's wife is from Mexico, and still visits family there, although she attained US citizenship this year. I worry whenever they're down there. She has a son from a prior marriage who is trying to emigrate to the US or Canada. Both countries have rejected him. (A daughter will become a US citizen next year, and has completed college here.)

It isn't just murders you have to be wary of in Latin America: a friend was in Costa Rica and at a restaurant along a river. The restaurant sold chickens to guests who then fed them from the restaurant wall to crocodiles on the river bank below. The crocs jump to catch the falling chickens. Sooner or later, some doofus is going to get caught by the hand and feed those crocs. At the least, they'll lose a hand or arm. The crocs can jump higher than most people think. My friend said they were crocodiles, not caimans, but whichever, they're very dangerous. (I doubt that she can tell a croc from a caiman.) The black caiman reaches at least 20 feet, and the American crocodile has been recorded to 23 feet. The latter is rare in the USA, limited to southern Florida, but is common in Mexico and further south. There is also an Orinoco croc in places like Venezuela. But she was in Costa Rica, so prob. they were C. americanus. They probably grow as large as Nile crocs, in remote areas.

Did anyone else here see the episode of, "River Monsters" where the black caiman kept eyeing host Jeremy Wade? If he isn't more careful, some croc or caiman is going to poach ol' Jeremy...
