An SUV from the 1920s...
This film was made by Dodge in the 1920s. It shows an all-purpose vehicle being used by an oil field outfit of the day in tough conditions - particularly deep mud.
"Oilfield Dodge" Promotional Film 1920s Dodge Brothers Wild Ride - YouTube
I don't think many present-day vehicles could do what this one is shown doing. The flip-over, righted-up and re-start sequence is amusing.
They don't make 'em like this any more!

An excellent book, "Dragon Hunter", details the Mongolian expedition led by Roy Chapman Andrews in search of early man. He insisted on dodge touring cars for the expedition. I now know why.

Had a buddy in the 60s that had a Dodge Power Wagon. That thing would go anywhere a hog could.

When I was a jr in high school I bought a 1929 model A pickup for $75 those 21 in narrow tires would go any where a jeep would go. really really wish I still had it. Sad part is the transmission went out and I didn't have enough money to fix it. Sold it for $50 bought a chick catcher 49 ford. another sad story.

I understand that the Dodge Brothers made the motors for Ford cars way back!

Andrews's own books speak of his equipment and his adventures in places like the Gobi Desert and various Asian forests. He was also the first real authority on whales.
Unlke most modern scientists, he was also an enthusiastic hunter. Be warned, though, that he was a Colt man in handguns.
He was a superb writer, and his books are worth seeking out. He died in 1960.
In the 1950's, another explorer named Wendell Phillips set out to find remains of the civilization of the Queen of Sheba. I think he also used Colts, and Savage rifles, one of the brands used by Andrews, and I think he also used Dodge cars. I believe that he got manufacturers to donate much of his equipment. It was good ad value for them.
I have, "Dragon Hunter", and it is a very good bio of Andrews. BTW, he made three expeditions to Mongolia. His primary sidearm was a Colt .38, worn low on his right hip in an Audley holster. I think the .38 was an Army Special, later re-named Official Police. Given the time frame, he might have actually had an OP on his last trip in 1930. But the earlier trips were prior to the OP name.

Fortunately (or not) it's rarely necessary these days.
Now that kind of thing is a sport. A distressing number of the Range Rovers, etc., that could do it are only driven to appointments with stockbrokers or to the country club. Go figure.

Here's a Dodge that probably did some good off-road work before it ran into trouble:

It looks like there were a bunch of folks traveling in a lot of out-of-the-way places, and they all had one thing in common. They drove a Dodge!!
Yep, I sure hate to brag, but I drive a 2002 ¾-ton Dodge diesel pickup with a manual transmission and six forward gears. It's just like the old ones. It will still go anywhere, and then some...except it has air conditioning, cruise control, and a stereo. And while it usually hauls a loaded 16-foot stock trailer, it will practically pull my house off its foundation.
Like Dizzy Dean said, "It ain't braggin' if it's fact!" And that, my good friends, is fact.

The Citroen-Haardt expedition of the 1930s used Citroen half-tracks to travel the ancient Silk Road. Real Indiana Jones stuff to include nomadic bandits, etc. Parts of the "road" had to be rebuilt and the vehicles disassembled to get through the goat-width sections.
My most memorable off-roading was taking a 3/4 ton Ford pickup down Black Bear Road above Tohelluride circa 1975. Some of those hairpin turns took 3 cuts to navigate. Only time I ever wanted a parachute in a truck.
And I HATE mud.

Watching that video, what impresses me is that no one has seatbelts! I wonder if they wore mouth guards to protect their teeth?
Very cool!

Think they will...
Think maybe they will bring this back into production. That isn't an 'off-the-road' vehicle, it's a 'What-is-a-road?' vehicle.
