Is it normal
Is it normal for friends to come over to show off their guns? Does that say something about my immediate circle of friends? Does it reflect on me?
Disclaimer: Neither I, nor my friends, have any terrorist tendencies or proclaim to want to bring down our "shutdown government".

It sounds like a lot of fun. Sharing newly acquired guns, ammo, reloading information is what we do best.
I don't bowl or shoot pool or hang out at bars.
I do enjoy shooting and sharing with others the experience of trying different guns, ammo and loads.
It is almost as much fun to watch someone else shoot my firearms as it is to shoot them myself.
I do believe that letting others see. handle and fire different guns just makes them more interested in the sport.
I will always offer a new shooter a chance to try something I may have at the range if they show interest. It's how we keep this hobby alive.

Sounds normal to me. My friends often bring guns over for me to see and give them my opinion on value, condition, authenticity or just to have me admire their latest find. It's also a two way street, as I take guns to their houses occasionally. (Especially if my gun is for sale!) Ed.

Sounds perfectly rational and normal to me as well.
I enjoy showing my friends my new "stuff" and i
get a kick out of seeing the excitement on their
faces as all my friends are gun friendly people.
I like to see and shoot their new acquisitions as well.
Only by sharing our love of the hobby will we get
new people involved and keep our numbers strong.

Only have a few friends left who still are able to afford this hobby. We let each other know of our latest acquisitions and occasionally get together to shoot them.

You are experiencing what was once a normal American male behavior. I know in my family that this behavior was and is practiced by 5 generations (My oldest grandson (6th generation) is only 6, but he will demonstrate his popgun for any and/or every on!). My wife grew up in a family that is the same. When I started carrying 24/7 a few years back, her comment was "Real men always have a gun on them somewhere", This was both a statement and a warning. My mom and M-I-L, wife and daughters-in-law and daughter all find it normal for the "Boys" to buy, play with, and show off their new toys. I'm not trying to bash your home state, but...WELCOME BACK TO THE REAL AMERICA! You and your friends carry-on. Ivan

You betcha. It's a standard pastime here in southern WV, especially when it involves gun trading and reloading. If I'm not at the range or reloading bench, at least we're having good, clean fun. These "hobbies" have stuck with me for half a century. We are truly blessed to live in the USA. The government shut down you say, when did that happen?

Okay, I was starting to wonder about myself and my friends. I know a few hunters, cops (current and retired), Marines, other soldiers, and just plain gun enthusiasts. I do have a couple of other friends that joke around and say that I am a terrorist because I have a lot of 9mm and .22 stashed away. This past weekend, one of them even asked me if it was legal to buy guns in California!

Other than being in the real world how is it any different than what we do here?
If no one else is hurt and your group is comfortablw with the behavior I'd say that for your group it's the norm

It used to be normal in my circle. Unfortunately, now not so much, but thinking about it I have fewer friends where I'm at now due to not living here long. But the friends I do have ALL have guns and shoot so it probably says more about me than them. That's who I seem to gravitate towards and I still like it!

I don't know if it's "normal" normal (especially here in the Granola state), but it's normal for people I meet that like guns.

+1.
I made a new friend the first time I took my M&P 15-22 to the range; he was working rested groups with a beautifully appointed match-barrelled 10/22, & expressed interest in the 15-22 as he'd 'been thinking about getting one.' I mentioned I'd never fired a match-grade Ruger, either.
We traded a couple mags' worth of shots, which gave me the chance to try both his nice rifle (wow, what a feather touch that trigger had), and also to try some of his M22 ammo in my new rifle.
We were both richer from the experience.
Almost every time I take my Hi-Standard HD Military to the range, I get interested questions from people who have heard of them but never fired one. Like as not I'll let them run a mag through it if they seem competent handlers.
Trying new tech is fun. As true for firearms as any other tech, in my book.

Now you have to show us your latest gun, so we can gawk, comment and (hopefully) drool.

Just keep........
Just keep the shades drawn and remember, the walls have ears. Don't talk loud enough for your neighbors to hear you. No computers or cell phones in the same room. If you hear a droning noise overhead, cover the guns with the tablecloth.

We do just that with friends and family. I remember one Thanksgiving dinner when I brought out my 686 plus and passed it around the table asking if anything looked different. My father-in-law said yeah something wrong with this gun as it has seven holes in the cylinder.
Often when I'm visiting him he'll ask about my carry gun of the day and I'll show him what I'm carrying. He's a gun guy from Arkansas and good news is talking about getting his CCW permit and a carry gun as he has bigger S&W handguns now which he's shown me too.
After showing my brother a Kimber 1911 he just had to have one and did get his own. It's a sickness I tell you.

For thirty years my boss's office was the place to show off a newly acquired firearm. At least once a month someone would bring one in; rifle, shotgun, handgun, new or old. He had a Hawken he built from a kit on his wall, and in another office was a Brown Bess he had built. The only time we had to worry was when the president came down, because if we had a new one, and hadn't told him, he was ticked. We had a local gun club meeting in our training room for a few years, and members would bring in stuff to sell or swap. This was in "uptight Illinois" no less!
Sadly those days are gone. When I go down to the plant now, there are no-gun signs prominently displayed.
PS The company sponsored trap and pistol teams in the Industrial League, too.

we have a group that get together for drinks every Fri. late afternoon. At least one or more "new" guns will be brought for "Show & Tell". These may range from the latest 9mm to a 100+ year old Damascus barreled beauty. WE all consider it very normal.

I'm fond of reminding coworkers that by definition, 50% of the people in any group will be of below-average intelligence (for that group).
It's especially fun when there's only two of you in the group.

There's just something about having a youngster come over and show off their new shotgun or rifle they got. They're proud, Daddy's proud and sometimes Momma's proud.
Enjoy all the show and tell days they don't happen as much as they used to.

Perfectly normal to me... Just like showing off new cars, guitars, girl friends... etc. My friends pretty much share the same interests as me. (Except the girlfriend part Just celebrated my 24th anniversary with my awesome gun shooting, muscle car loving, going deaf due to loud guitars wife.)

H Richard beat me to this post. He and I, and on occasion, SG-688 , have enjoyed a couple of drinks at another friends house for over 30+ years every Friday afternoon from about 4:30 to give or take 6:30. This group as been as large as 20 to 25 or 30 good friends spanning 3 or 4 generations and depending on who is in country or off duty or back home for the holidays or any special time. You could not ask for a better bunch of friends. Needless to say, they are all gunners so any and all new additions are cussed ,discussed, and otherwise enjoyed by all.

My friends and I are not wealthy enough to buy a new or different gun very often, but when somebody gets something good we make our rounds to show it off. One old guy that lived on past me out here, always showed me what he acquired. he died a while back and I have often wondered what ever became of his fairly nice collection.
Yeah, it seems very normal to me.
Peace,
Gordon
