Dicks Sporting Goods a dissappointment
Just opened in Lake Charles. In my opinion more emphasis on clothing. Nice store and good for the community, but I was disappointed in the firearm section. OK selection of long arms. No handguns. Ammo locked up out of view of customers. Difficult to see what was available which was very little. Fishing gear available, but not an extremely large selection. Guess I expected a little more of a Cabelas type store. They wont give Academy's much of a run in fishing and guns and ammo department. Academy seems to be really making an effort to restock and make ammo available to the public. On the shelves and not locked up with the exception of 22 ammo. Just venting and my opinion.

Yeah, they just opened a store in Gainesville, GA. Pretty much for city folks, not much outdoor stuff. Nice store for a girly-man or a yuppie.

Pretty much the same thing at our Dick's Sporting Goods in Ogden, Utah. The firearms section leaves a lot to be desired. No handguns at all and a minimal selection of long guns. I went there once. That's enough.

I go to Dick's for clothing from time to time but the people that work there don't know anything about what they're selling. They've never had a great selection of ammo and their prices aren't great either.

Dick's do not sell handguns. When they took over the Galyan's store in the Valley all the handguns were dumped at near wholesale, which is when I grabbed my 686+.

Excluding the Basspro, Cabelas type of stores most sporting good stores i.e., Dicks, Sports Authority, etc., are nothing more than clothes stores with golf clubs and lures.

There's a couple around here. My brother was telling me how he beat up a clerk for some discount or such on a Henry. He sure seems proud of his pestyness. I'd be scared to go there with the same last name, they're ain't to many of us around.
Anyhow, I haven't been in one yet and don't plan on it anytime soon.
I like the classics.

Dick's is like walmart. You only go there when they advertise what you want at a good price. Since I almost never buy new guns, big box stores only work for hunting clothes, cleaning kits and ammo on sale....

I have bought a little ammo
Bought some shotgun ammo over the years at Dick's for not a bad price. That's about all I'm interested in in the whole place because it is a Tony camping store. Oh, got some collapsible chairs, too, and a little athletic gear for my son (cups, mouthguards). That's it. I avoid the place.

Dick's Sporting Goods started in my home town. They used to be a mom and pop shop and then they expanded to a few stores. After awhile they went corporate and that is when it all turned down hill. Most of their products are way overpriced but you can find deals from time to time. Their firearms are geared towards hunters so double barrel shotguns and bolt action rifles is what you will mostly see. Rarely is ammo reasonably priced except shotgun ammo which is decent but I usually go to Walmart for shotgun ammo. Their fishing section sucks too. Walmart has better prices and more of a selection.

From what I have seen of Dick's (there's one about 2 miles from my home) they are a lower end basics type store as far as Firearms are concerned. Even the models they do carry are the lower end. For instance, if you want a Remington 870 they will usually have the model that has the cheap wood and basic low gloss finish, but they compete on price point. If you want a Field grade or better that will have to be gotten at your LGS and will be substantially more.
Their ammo selection is also basic as are their cleaning kits, accessories, and
cases. They are just looking to compete on prices - certainly not quality, service or selection.

I have ranted and raved here many times about how horrible they are. They cater to guys who only know "a little" about shooting.
The rest caters to soccer moms.
They call it Dick's for a reason......

They aren't bad if you catch a sale, but what they do is sell gear to the neophyte. If you want something better than generic sporting goods, you need to go to a specialty store.

Dick's is fine as long as you don't think of them as gun stores. I have found them a good source of sports clothing, like biking shorts, and I used to get my son his baseball gear at Dick's. If you a golfer you probably like the store as well, since it seems that is the largest part of the entire store. When I first moved to this city and went to Dick's for the first time, I went to the gun department and asked where the handguns were. The clerk told me that the chain did not want to have anything to do with the handgun trade and I guess that is still the case.

Nothing of intrest in there. The fishing/hunting section seems to be geared towards those who just want to try it out, beginners, or those who are occasional shooters. A little bit of everything in the beginner stuff.
However a buddy of mine got there on a sale day and picked up a Remington 700 in 308 for $350

I guess I'm going to be the black sheep here. I frequent Dick's for my kid's athletic stuff. They run pretty good specials on tech-wear clothing, training shoes, soccer cleats and the like.
I don't consider them to be a viable/reliable source for hunting and shooting. Although if you catch them right they have some good deals. They are only so-so for fishing and camping. They are a sporting goods department store and not anywhere near as specialized as a Cabelas, LL Bean or BPS. I don't believe they'd argue that point.
I have always found their customer service to be good and their staff, while not brain surgeons, adequate and accessible. Their return policy is as good as any of their competitors.
I try to support the local shops, but I do shop at Dick's and would be upset if they disappeared.

Dick's sporting goods
WE have one not too far my location....they are on my permanent boycott list due to their behavior last year when the furor erupted (again) over the evil black rifles.....Dick's cancelled their contract with a mfgr who had invested a lot of capital into equipment to meet this contract of AR's.....instead of standing up for our rights, they immediately caved and said "no AR's"....so ...no more Dick's sporting goods.

Not serious shooters, hunters or fishermen, for sure. Mostly golfers, devotees of bicycling and exercise machines, and yuppie women who like to wear "sports" clothing to the stockbroker's office or the club. At least that's how it looks to me, in each of the stores here I've visited.
I'll spend my very limited funds with Bass Pro Shops or Cabela's.

As I've said before, it's not just their name, it's how they do business. A lot of them require an escort to the cash register if you buy ammunition. I've heard of a couple that require a manager to walk you to the door and hand you the ammunition as you leave.

I never found their bike stuff to be all that great. Neither selection or price. Mostly they seem to have "department store" quality bikes, which makes sense.
As someone else pointed out, they are mostly a clothing store.
I did get two hockey pucks there, which I promptly drilled holes into so that I could use them as gunsmithing blocks. They won't mar the finish and are cheap.

Dick's is a second tier sports merchandiser who's Lodge department carry only the basics and offer little or no experience when it pertains to arms and ammo.Since it's the only national chain that offers long guns and ammo in New Jersey we are sometimes forced to seek them out for ammo and I for one wait for their sales, use their reward checks and the $10.00 coupons they offer if you fill out their survey to get .9mm ammo down to .20 cents/round.

Dick's has it's place.I picked up a kayak a few years ago for $250.All I needed was a boat to paddle around high mountain lakes and do a little fishing from. The kayaking stores don't sell those kinds of boats.

OR, they could easily allow you to pay for the ammo-at their gun counter-just like at WalMart--instead of wasting time getting someone to escort you to the door.

Dicks usually has a good supply of athletic shoes.
I bought a cheap air matress from them a couple years ago.
Their RemChesterArms selection of promotional models doesn't interest me.
I already own a 10-22 and an 870.
I already have five Chinese pocket knives and flashlights.
I'm sure I don't need another.
I bought ammo from them several years ago when they had brass-case 9mm at $8/50.

I found scope mounts at dicks. I think they focus on all sports from baseball/soccer/basketball/football out to golf, fishing, kayaking, front yard games...
When I was a serious paintball player I went there to make fun of their paintball inventory.

"Dork's Sporting Geeks" as a friend who used to run the bicycle section of the local one called it. Your basic big-box/corporate store. Underpaid and poorly trained-and hence unreliable-sales help, managers who really don't know what they're doing, etc.

Well, even though I had never heard of them until recently, we're getting one. Probably will be open by Christmas. Is it like an L.L. Bean (but not as good)? I will say this, they can build um fast because in just a very short period of time, they're about 60% through as the same holds for the causway/parkway/bridge construction that has been going on for about 2+years now.

L.L. Bean is about 10 notches above Dick's. REI is at least five notches above Dick's.
I wouldn't buy guns at Bean, but that's a matter of price only. I've bought a lot of clothes and other things at Bean and they are not only high quality, but they have a life time return policy. I've only bought a few things at REI, but have never had a problem there either.
Dick's seems to have a lot of corporate boiler plate policies and is definitely not gun owner friendly.

I just remembered an article I read about a test concept Dick's opened in Pennsylvania recently to capitalize on the sales that Cabelas,Bass and Gander Mountain are reporting. Field & Stream store to send Dick's stores in new direction | TribLIVE
