Talking Surprise Visitors

I have a pair of yearling deer browsing in my front yard or what I loosely refer to as my front yard. They have been there for the last three days and nights. They come and go, but will graze for a couple of hours at a time. I am well back about 1000 yards off the highway up on a high hill, and live on 170 acres of partially wooded land. I do have a fenced back yard but the front is an undefined area that I mow from time to time.

My guess is that these are siblings whose mother was killed earlier in the hunting season, leaving these two not very bright yearlings to fend for themselves. Even when I walk out on the deck they just look up at me and keep grazing. While I have no plans to harm them and rather enjoying watching them, I doubt they will be long for this world.

No doubt their mother did not live long enough to teach them much about survival. There is tender grass for them here, but unlike last year, this year we did not have many acorns or pecans to attract them here. Since I have a German Shepherd, and am a rather noisy fellow, I cannot imagine why they choose this place to be their feeding grounds.

My brother in law and sister built a 2 story log cabin next to Concan river and every time we go there-there are always Deer to be seen. Glad you have some coming around-they know who the good folks are.

About a month ago, I came out of the indoor range house at the club after an evening of shooting. Just across the parking lot and on the berm/backstop for the shotgun range was a doe slowly walking, browsing on the greens, paying no attention at all to the shotgun blasts going off no more than a couple hundred feet further down the range.

Last week, in the middle of the afternoon, another doe just slowly ambled right past our front picture window, while my wife and the cats watched and cars whizzed past on the busy road, before rounding the corner of the house and walking to the woods behind the house beyond the garden.

A couple of years ago I was out in the early, early morning to watch meteors, when I heard something moving in the garden. I walked back there to find a herd of deer just standing there, looking at me, only about 20-feet away. Yelling and waving my arms at them did no good. I had to run at them to get across the idea that I wanted them to leave.

As you can see, deer can become acclimated to the presence of people and loud scary noises.

This knucklehead used to hang out at my club range fairly often, ignoring all the gunfire and munching on the local browse. I doubt she lived a long and healthy life!

We had a pair of fawns a couple years ago that acted the same way. They'd come into the backyard just before dusk every night and munch apples. They never were bothered when we were outside or even when the dog was with us. Yelling at them to get out of the garden didn't work either.
We felt something must have happened to momma and doubt they lasted long as we didn't see them again after hunting season.

They are murderous vermin. Don't encourage them.

We were camped at Fall Creek Falls State Park a few months ago.
A doe and 2 fawns would graze right behind our camp site until a family in a REALLY BIG, new Class A camped next to us and the guy and his kids tried to walk up to the deer with a cookie for them.
Some people.....

I like to see deer - I used to eat them too, but gave up hunting a while back for safety reasons --- Just too many folks in the local woods.

Actually, if the rut is on in your area the mother may be entertaining a buck for a couple of days.....if so, she and the buck shoooed the kids away so they could "get it on" without being disturbed. If that's the case the doe will reunite with the yearlings and life will go back to normal for them.
