Kodiak
This is Kodiak. So named because the first time I met him, he looked like a bear cub. I lost him a year ago Thanksgiving and miss him every single day. Kodiak was a Newfoundland and my best friend.

Maybe consider adopting a more low key senior dog. Rescues usually have a hard time placing the older folks.

1966. This is Tippy, the black one, explaining to Red, the new one, who boss dog is. Tippy was, maybe, two. Red was eight weeks. Notice Mama's slipper, for scale.
Two years later. Red had grown a bit. He still knows that Tippy is boss dog.

If I couldn't have a Cattle Dog I would probably go for a Corgi. Many don't know that these cute little lowriders are actually a pretty hardcore herding breed.

Murphy the Border Terrier. He is gone now but he was my first and likely only dog. One happy dog visiting a relative's dairy farm.

The first step in dying is to quit living. We get weak as we age not so much because it is inevitable, but because we don't do as much. I have met some men and women who are well into their 70s and 80s who are still going strong and very tough. I see a few of them at the gym regularly.
Get a companion dog that appeals to you (although the point that mature dogs are harder to place is sadly valid), and get at the process of living. Barring some unforeseen issue, I intend to have big strong dogs as for another 20+ years, and I am almost 56.

Sconnie.
When I lost Holly, I swore never again. Over two years later a local shelter called. Buddy Holly came into my life. When they found him he was less then 50 pounds. He is 115 pounds now. He won't leave my side. We also rescued an all white Shepherd, Suzy Bogguss. My last four GS's have all been rescue. Do yourself a favor, check out area shelters. If your older, like me, they have older dogs that only want a warm place to sleep and wrap your heart around their paw. You deserve it and they do too.

True, rescue dogs can be wonderful. My little rat terrier Moose came to me four years ago when he was, they thought, about six. He has been a terrific companion, all I could ask for.

This is Sully, our silver lab. He just turned a year old. First pic is when we got him. In second pic he's 11 months old and still thinks he's a lap dog.

I'm always amazed, and often amused, at the relationships dogs form. These two obviously trust each other and have a deep friendship. Beautiful girls!

If the intent of those photos is to make the viewer smile, then you've succeeded admirably! That gorgeous puppy has turned into a handsome young dog, hasn't he? I'll bet that tail could clear the knicknacks off a coffee table with one swipe! Love the photos...beautiful dog, and he will always be your lap dog.
