Default Anybody else have to work on Thanksgiving? I do, ALL DAY!

I hope everybody has a good Thanksgiving. Turkey, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and gravy and of course....pie.
Then a nap and some football.
Think of me. I'll be working over 12 hours following somebody on a surveillance. In 25 degree weather.

Those of us who are self employed are used to this.
Anybody else gonna work their butt off tomorrow?
Jim

Worked today, work tomorrow. Can't complain, I knew that would happen in my line of business.
I think of the many who don't have a job. (And want one..) I am thankful.

I'll be carrying the pager and will probably have to go in. As bugkiller said, it's part of the job.

The least you can do is get him a 7 pack.
I can pull it off, as you know where I reside.

My wife is. Lost her job and couldn't find work in her field and was on the verge of running out of UC. Applied at Wal-Mart. They were told if they were scheduled to work and didn't show up they were terminated.
So I am going to eat enough for her too.

I worked my share of holidays, weekends, birthdays, and assorted other special days over the years, so I'm going to enjoy having the day off.

For those of you who have to work, make the best of it and be safe.

Be safe all you who have careers that require someone to be available 24/7. Law enforcement, Emergency/ Hospital workers, military, Gas stations...and others...Your service on a Day like thanksgiving is something I am Thankful for.
As for the retailers who have decided they need to open on Thanksgiving.. Sorry for those working in retail that are forced to work.

I feel for you, P&RFan! I don't know if it will make you feel any better, but though I don't have to work today, I won't be getting a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Mom doesn't cook anymore, & my sister & I couldn't get it together in time. So, we're having BBQ. Good, but my taste buds were set for some turkey & all the trimmings!

As a firefighter for 30 years, holidays were just another work day most of the time. My retirement job is also a 24/7/365 public safety gig, so the tradition continues, but I do happen to be off today.

Happy Thanksgiving to all...

Just found out we're going out to eat with the family here in town today before I start my surveillance......to IHOP.

I hate that place.

Sigh.

Happy Thanksgiving to everybody.

Default Working Holidays

My wife was is a retired intensive care nurse, and I am a retired police detective. We both worked more than our share of holidays. Over the years their were a few holidays when we didn't see each other because we were working different shifts. The only day that I really disliked working was Christmas day. Christmas is for families! Christmas could be busy after the alcohol took effect, or people got tired having dinner with relatives, that they really didn't like. During our down time we were able to visit friends and relatives, when we were on duty. That was a good thing. I remember two Christmas's when I was working. One we had a pursuit early Christmas morning. We caught the guy in Philadelphia about 20 miles away. Several accidents and an arrest, with paperwork. The second incident was a domestic on Christmas afternoon, when an adult son punched his older mother right in the face, in front of three cops. He was our guest until we could get him arraigned the next day. Paper work on an arrest like that takes at least 4 hours. Nice being retired and being able to spend time with our kids and grand children. Happy Thanksgiving and Christmas to all!

I worked rotating shifts for over 46 years and it was a 24/7/365 day job. They estimated that any shutdown cost about $50,000.00 to clean up and restart. I worked a lot of holidays and weekends.

I always figured it was a good way for a dummy to make a living.

I like the way it is now, retired and everyday is Saturday. Sometimes I just designate a day off for myself.

I'm on telephone stand-by, but the chances of anything happening that would require my presence are approaching zero.

Default WORKING THE HOLLIDAY

Retired now and working my butt off cooking for NO PAY. When I was an RN & single I'd often volunteer to work all holidays for the 2.5x$ and a trade for superbowl sunday and hunting seasons. When I felt sorry for myself I just had to think of the people in the hospital bed I was caring for. Someone is always worse off. You will get through it and appreciate the $ in about 3 weeks. Stay safe/warm.

Security guard, I haven’t had a thanksgiving off since I started working for this company (5 years). I’m at work right now (1320 MST) (bviously wrking hard) and it’s really not that bad.

I’m the only one here and I’m surrounded by a school (closed) a county maintenance facility (closed) a concrete factory (closed) and a cattle ranch (Fairly certain the cows are working today too).

bottom line is it’s as quiet as a tomb out here. Just the way I like it.

My stepson is a small town policeman and works a lot of holidays. I haven't talked to him today but last year, he had his lunch break at the game warden's house, they were eating at noon, the highway patrolman's family invited him to stop by at three when they were eating and his chief told him to stop by after his shift ended at six and they would wait for him. Yes he ate at all three places, the benefits of working in a small community.

Nope...been retired a while...unless you count me sitting here watching my grandkids while the parents go out to shop but that is a true labor of love.

Update:

11.5 hours of surveillance. Got down to 10 degrees, got home at about 0300 this morning. Ate convenience store pizza and a cookie. Drove about 400 miles following my mobile target.

Thanksgiving was sooooo exiting for me, but I do have so much to be thankful for.

So, did my Steelers win?
Jim

My wife had Thanksgiving Day off.
But she's working on call all weekend.

I did quite a bit of prep cook work yesterday but the
meal at the end was worth it. We were both thankful
for it, and a lot of other things.

Default oh the joys of retirement

In my 25+ yrs of service with CDC (California department of corruption), oops did I just say that I had a total of 3 Thanksgiving days off.

My hats off to any and all public servants that work holidays, BTDT.

Amazingly, we got through a 12 hour holiday shift without a report being filed in the district. Didn't have time to cook a turkey in between shifts so I brought in a slow cooker full of chicken taco chili so the shift could eat somewhere in peace.

I technically worked thanksgiving. I work overnights so I went in Wednesday night at 10pm and stayed until 6am Thanksgiving. So I got 6hrs overtime. Not bad. Went home and slept until it was time to eat. Also not bad And now it's weekend time.
