Pictures of the lake that jumped in front of my truck
You guys asked so I went back to where the lake jumped out in front of me and took some pictures. It looks scarier in person, especially at night doing 35 or 40. Knowing there was a lake, not knowing how deep it was, and seeing all that smooth flat snow in front of me... Well it was disturbing to say the least!!
I'm really glad all I have to show for it is a small repair bill!!

Yikes. Glad all's well that ended well.
Is it just my imagination, or in the second pic, has another truck tried to emulate what you did, and skidded down the grade until it ran into a little tree and stopped, just to the left there of where you attempted to launch the USS Lost Lake?

youre lucky that the ice was only 2" if it was 4" it would have let you get a little further before breaking. but ive no doubt youve played over all the "what ifs?" a thousand times by now.
ok, so... no more closing your eyes when you sing along with old willie nelson songs ...right?

Those darned stationary objects.
Like the tree that jumped out and smacked my truck in the tailgate when I was backing into a parking area at a local trailhead.
A hand sledge and a hunk of 2X4 took care of that.
My wife got a good laugh out of it.

Wow, great to hear that the truck did not go completely into the water.
Or, as mentioned, if the ice was thicker, you could have been out there just a bit farther and then break through.

Nah, that truck is a guy out on the ice fishing. I asked him how thick the ice is and he said it was more than four inches today.
The chunk I pulled from above my front axle was about 4" thick. I think two inches was a poor initial guess.
It was nerve wracking!

Hindsight being 20/20, you should have gone WOT in hopes you could make it to the far side. It can't be over a mile or so... Although I didn't end up in a lake, I have been in a truck headed the wrong way on ice with NO way to stop it. It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion. Glad everything worked out in the end.

If you let off of the breaks, you can steer again. Then pump them to slow down as you turn into the trees.

Well duh. The problem is you're too distracted taking pictures while you're driving instead of watching the lake as it sneaks up on you. You'll get him next time.

Its plain to see from your pics how easy it is for something like that to happen. At least you don't have my kind of luck! If you did, when you went back to take your pics you would have slid right down the ramp again.

Of course it is easy to Monday Morning Quarterback...
Did you consider steering into one of the trees? That may have been better than taking the risk of immersing a running engine.

I was helping my dad roof once. He started sliding backwards off the roof. I still have to laugh every time I remember the expression on his face.
I bet yours was similar!

He put it into the lake because he was distracted by looking up directions on the GPS per his original post. That's the point. Main reason I don't have one, no need to take your eyes OFF the road without one, same with texting.

You may have thought this was a joke.. but I've used this trick several times. Works if you're 4X4 and not going fast.
Yes, we do have that "white stuff" in the mountains!

Same rule when it rains. A locked wheel does not steer, it must be rolling to steer. I have been trained to drive on a skid pad. When you lock the wheel, the car will go the direction that it was going when the wheel locked. You must let off of the brake to steer again. I have seen many panic and hit the brakes and wonder why turning the steering wheel does not make the car change directions.
I owned a 1962 Porsche 356B years ago. It would over steer or under steer depending on the accelerator.
