Default Have you eaten Oppossum? Armadillo?

Anyone here eaten oppossum or armadillo?

I know that many people do eat possums. Armadillos are said to carry leprosy.

If you have eaten either, what was your impression? Did you like it? Do you know anyone who's eaten armadillo? Did they get leprosy or any other ailment or disease?

Let's throw in raccoons. Are they eaten? Do they have many parasites?

I've eaten nearly everything else that lives in the woods, but have never eaten possum or armadillo. I'd probably try some possum if it had been penned up and fed a clean diet for a month or two, but I don't think I'd want it straight out of the woods.

Armadillos eat mostly grubs, bugs and worms, so they're fairly clean. I'd probably try it if the opportunity presented itself.

They don't necessarily carry leprosy, but they are the only animal other than humans that can contract it.

I have eaten possum and coon.
The coon is so-so. I wouldn't go looking for it, but I'd eat it again if I was starving.
I had a Widlife Officer tell me once that he believed that the only reason possums survive is because they're just so foul that most predators won't touch them. I believe him!

I ate some meat on a stick (skewered) being sold by street vendors in Alongapo, Phillipines (Subic Bay). They cooked it over charcoal in push carts. I liked it. It was gooood. I shouldn't have asked what it was but I did. That was the last time I ate monkey meat on a stick.

One of my grandpas and his brother liked possum. They would put them up and feed them (I think) milk, bread and sweet taters for awhile to clean them out. I put chickens, possum and cats in the same food group. All three are foul and I ain't eating any of the three. Larry

Here we go now....We'll be hearing in the news about numerous pedestrians getting hit by cars rumored to have been seen scraping up the roadkill into a crockpot down in Texas.

Armadillos are too hard to skin, but I know a place where buzzards love to eat them. The old the guy that has the next place over from where I took the attached 'dillo used to trap raccoons for the fur. He told me he made more on the black market from the meat than he did legally on the pelts. I did not delve further into the issue.

A couple years ago I caught a oppossum in a live trap in the back yard. I took it to work and gave it to a foriegn guy I worked with. This was a day or two before Christmas. When we came back from the long weekend, he thanked me several times. He said it was "very, very very yummy" ,they had it for Christmas dinner. The awesome Christmas oppossum

Coon tastes a lot like very greasy roast beef. It is not really to my liking but it would keep a man from starving. I don't care for squirrel either, but I have eaten it and would again if necessary. So far I have not eaten opossum or armadillo, and unless this economy gets a lot worse I never will. My taste run to deer, beef, chicken, rabbit, and pork. Quail and dove are pretty good also.

Was it just today where Caje said on another thread that he had eaten armadillo? It didn't sound too tasty, and I would be in no hurry to try it. I would like to have a stuffed one though. I passed on one in Afton, Wyoming once on a motorbike trip, because I would have had trouble packing it. Yup, kicking myself ever since.

I loved the monkey meat, or rat meat, whatever it might have been. Coming back across the river that started with "S", throwing money to the bonka boat girls, and finishing up my "meat" on a stick. It was a great place to be young in.

I have shot quite a few armadillos, usually left them lying for the other residents of the forest to eat.

My father in law ate just about anything that moved. For the wifes bridal party had a huge stew pot full of racoon. Used to grab a hunk and suck the meat off the bone. Just like roast beef. Used to keep a few coons in the freezer for parties and such. One year he got carried away with the seasoning and a
lot of beer was consumed between bites. Frank
Mr.Pokeyman, spent some time around olongapo city and yep monkey on a stick was one of my favorites. Had a buddy fall in one of the ditches and came up smelling like he had spent the night in someone's septic system.
They didn't have sewers at the time so the ditches were usually full of s--t.In Olongapo city you never knew what was going to happen. I watched two guys with the butterfly knives chase a rather large lizard across the dance floor I asked the young lady what are they going to do with it. They gonna cook and eat it. Frank

I have not eaten possum or armadillo.
I have eaten nutria, alligator, rattlesnake, Poule d' eau, gallinule, blackbird and other birds that I was not told what they were.

In Louisiana, you have heard people called Coonasses. This is not an insult as they call themselves this. I have heard from the locals that the reason that they call them that is that it is the only thing that they will not eat. You have to understand that the original Cajuns lived off of the land and they ate what was available. They did learn how to make what they ate taste very good.

I've tasted barbequed possum and coon both.
Possum was too gamey.
Coon was too greasy.
Never tried armadillo.
Squirrel is good - fix it like chicken, either floured and fried or boiled with dumplings. Gotta' get them BIG squirrels from the midwest that been eating acorns and walnuts though. These little things around here aren't big enough to eat...

When I was a kid growing up in rural CT, I at least tried about anything that could be shot or trapped at least once (No Armadillo's though) Of all the non traditional game I have tried, a young woodchuck that has been feeding on clover or grain all summer is very good. A friend I grew up with, who introduced me to coon hunting with dogs, used to always bring em home for his mom to cook. She made a heck of a stew with them.

Well, possum and Armadillo are both greasy---good but greasy.
As far as Cajuns go----they ate Nutria until they found out what food was.
Possum and armadillo was pretty common fare in East Texas when I was growing up. Rattlesnake (snakes in general) were not uncommon food.
Now, mind---momma was not the cook---this was man food for camp.
Stews---best not to ask what the meat was---might have been a kin-folk.
Blessings

Some years ago a friend prepared Raccoon cacciatore for a game dinner we were putting on. ( I beleive i made the frog legs that year :-)) It was delicious. However, it was very hard to digest (and I have a cast iron stomach). I was burping it up for three full days! Others had the same issue. Not sure if it was something in the meat or ....... Bottom line: I'll try anything but raccoon is right up there with snapping turtle on my don't bother to cook /eat list.

I have eaten coon and possum, served in a restaurant! It was in Breaux Bridge IIRC and I was with my father who was a petroleum engineer and it was back in the 50's. Someone from the kitchen who knew my dad as a 'regular', approached our table and told my dad they had a special that wasn't on the menu and it was recommended. Turned out it was coon and possum baked with sweet potatoes and it was really good.
When I was trapping and eliminating beaver for the USFS I discovered that a young one was also very good eating. Just had to be very careful about the scent glands when dressing out.

Years ago there was a grand opening for a boating and marine supply company in Ft. Lauderdale. They had a sign up for free barbequed possum on a bun. The meat looked like pork so I got one and got another for my wife. The meat taste like sweet chicken to me but my wife wouldn't even try it. I ate both sandwichs.

I wonder how successful a McPossum's drive-thru restaurant would be?

No possum, but armadillo yes. Couple of other fellas chased him into a palmetto patch. Me, I waited to see who would come out snake bit first

Cooked low and slow on a spit. Greasy. Not on my list of things to have for dinner tonight.

I'll save the possum and coon for survival food. Back in the 70s while working in the Hospital at Ft. Hood, we had a soldier diagnosed with leprosy, supposedly contracted from cleaning armadillos, with bare hands.

I guess people who said they haven't eaten any of these, have never eaten in a Chinese restaurant.

But, is an armadillo a tactical possum, or is a possum an upholstered armadillo?

I've never had the chance to eat either, but I'd be willing to at least try them if cooked by someone who knew what they were doing. Likewise raccoon.

I have had the chance to try iguana stew in Bonaire (not bad), and snake soup in Taipei (I think it's some sort of gag they play on the tourists).

My 'friendly native guide' on the Taipei trip, Jonny Lao, told me there's an old Chinese saying that says "If the sun shines on it's back, you can eat it." I decided to never tie my shoes in daylight there.

I think I may have inadvertently had a few "tacos de calle de perro " back in the days I used to travel down Baja, too.

According to Paul Rodriguez, an armadillo is a rat with aluminum siding.

I've eaten armadillo many times as a young man. We used to use them for the camp dinner. But when we heard about the leprosy, we stopped-I mean instantly stopped!

Possum is edible, not my favorite.

My mom could bake a racoon and I know you have heard this before, but it really tasted very much like a baked chicken, only greasier. Good grease, though.

Sadly I failed to get the recipe from her before it was too late. I have never been as successful at cooking it as she was.

I have eaten lots of rattlesnake and, as a young policeman, I cooked one, took it to the station and fed the girls in Records. I sorta lied to them, telling them it was small chicken backs. They were really mad at me when some snitch dimed me out.

Had coon and opossum made for me by a Louisiana woman. It was in a stew and the meat was packed in a sausage casing. I had most of it gone by the time she fessed up about what it was.

I agree coon and bear are greasy meats.

I've had to kill a few opossums which have invaded my garbage or my back porch. No way I would EVER eat any animal that smells that bad unless I was starving. Possum-even the crows and turkey vultures won't eat them!

I had a little bit of beaver, as in the orange toothed rodent. Tasted like strong dark meat turkey.

Oh yea, opossums, armadillos, coons, I just keep foil in the truck, and when I find something in the road I just wrap it in foil with some dried macaroni and throw it on the manfold. I call it "the manifold method". An hour or so later - it's ready to eat! Heck, sometimes it's so flattened on the road, I don't even know what it is.

Ok, I'm kidding.

No, I have eaten neither.

My father was a young adult by the time the depression arrived as were most of his friends. They were also immigrants who came here to escape poverty after WWII.Ive never had possum or armadillo, but these people could make the best meals (a number of them became very successful chefs) out of the oddest and cheapest ingredients.I've always liked poor people food :-)

I popped a possum one night and was gonna bury it the next AM. By the time I got up the vultures were tearing it to shreds.

I was on the carrier USS Independence. We were homeported at Subic in 1965. We did about 30 days off the coast of Vietnam each time out and then back to Subic for supplies and R&R in Olongapo. That had to be the craziest place I ever went to.
I ate a bunch of mystery meat there but never drank the water. Only drank San Miguel. Lots of it.

One summer, the grass in our front yard died - probably as the result of some kind of fungus. The wife insisted on a new front yard, so I laboriously installed a brand new St. Augustine grass front yard by myself, in the hot Texas summer. The next day, the yard was ripped up by armadillos. Thus began my nightly stakeout in an effort to kill the varmits that ripped up my new yard. That Sunday, at church, the story had evidently spread as a number of members stopped me to give me advice as to how to catch/kill/eliminate the varmits. What surprised me was when the Pastor told me to use .22 caliber shorts when shooting the armadillos (I actually couldn't shoot them with any firearm as there are 2 cops that live in the neighborhood). When I asked the Pastor if using the .22 Shorts was for quiet killing, he told me: "no, the .22 shorts have enough power to kill them, but they'll crawl out of your yard and die somewhere else, so you don't have to deal with the mess." Turns out the Pastor was an avid gardener, and had no love for armadillos. I was finally able to catch the grass killing pair of armadillos in the yard one night, and tuned them both up with a Louisville slugger. Who'd guess that armadillos could run so fast? No, I've never eaten either armadillos or possums, and I don't plan on starting.

Regards,

Dave

Just about every year we get someone who has been watching too much TV and comes to live off the land. The two strangest things eaten I ever heard of were a couple of guys up near Livengood with a porcupine, skinning must have been a treat. They claimed it was just fine. The other was a guy went up one of the rivers and got so desparate he shot a raven and tried to eat it. The smell was so bad he had to stand down wind couldn't get it down and offered it to his dog who just took a wiff and did that deep in the throat warning growl. The dog left probably knew anyone that desparate would figure what else could be eaten.
