Maybe it all averages out.
If you want to see smoking and drinking watch the first three movies in the "Thin Man" series from the early 1930s. William Powell puts Bond to shame in that category. My Dad " came of age" in the early 30s. He smoked from about 15 until he died at. 95. Do the math

Thank you Dennis The B, I THOUGHT that was right but never really cared to argue it.

The other kid answers in a condescending tone, "Don't be stupid! Mighty Mouse is just a cartoon; Superman's a real guy!"

This study reminds me of that.

The gentlman who mentioned the Welsh waitress was probably just referring to Great Britain when he called Bond one of her countrymen. Yes, Sir Sean Connery is Scottish. I do not know his order of knighthood. KCMG?

But there is some agitation for both Wales and Scotland to become independent of the UK. In Spain, it's the Basques and the Catalonians who want to be independent. In the USA, some Texans want to leave the USA and become a separate nation again.

Texas is the only one of these locations that could make it on its own, having the world's seventh largest economy. Frankly, I doubt that any will secede from the present unions.

Truthfully, I hope nobody wishes to leave the union, that would be embarassing and would begin to make us look like a third world place and a failed experiment.I agree, Texas can make it on its own, we even have a large Gold Depository here separate from the Feds stash.

I don't know about all this leaving the union ****, and James Bond being a chronic alcoholic, but I sure as hell agree 100% with Caje's view on the state of this world!

Well, nobody could match my dad when it came to abusing alcohol and tobacco-he took a back seat to no one in that department and he lived to be 81. He shoulda died at age 59 when he had the stroke but he recovered completely. Go Figure....

Errol Flynn would have made the best Bond. Since that was not possible Sean Connery was a good choice. (although Roger Moore was my favorite Bond)

Todays kinder, gentler, sensitive, non smoking, clean living, veggie munching, unisexual, P.C. Bond isn't a patch on the real deal.

P.S. A Doctor told my Dad that he would never see 60 if he didn't quit smoking and drinking. It would kill him for sure. Well it did, but he was almost 80 at the time. (and he outlived that Doctor)

Have you ever been to Britian? They lost their rights to own guns, they eat bland food that costs too much and they drink warm beer.
Does anyone really give credibility to any British Research?

Red face I stand corrected

I don't know how or why but for some reason I actually believed that Sean Connery was from Wales. Now I'm REALLY EMBARRASSED.

No tellin' what that cute little Welsh waitress thinks of me now...prolly just another confused Yank.

I suspect by statistics what they meant was that if the evidence as written is representative of his behavior during periods which are not described then the total amount of consumption as extrapolated equals a serious problem.

Of course this ignores a couple of details such as whether or not he was able to consume any or all of the drinks ordered/served and whether or not his habits while actively working a case or uh "working out" are representative of his level of consumption at other times.

Must be why it's called "fiction". If it were real, poor Bond would have died or suffered constantly from STDs, since the women he constantly bedded were sluts.....and if he really had the high morals and backbone we were told, paying support for the amount of besturd children he would have spawned, would have put him in the poor house.

I know you've heard the saying, "open mouth, insert foot" I was the inspiration for that one. Actually I'm working on getting them both in there at once. Since I have small feet and a big mouth all those that know me are confident that I'll make it...soon...and often.

The doctors were convinced that Bond was too shaky from alcoholism to stir his drinks? Poppycock, old man. It's well known that he favored a vodka martini, shaken, not stirred. Shakiness would have been an advantage. So much for professional opinion.

I thought them thar Doctors were wrong on that. They ought to go back to Dr school and take remedial classes. Apparently they only actually scanned those books.

What happened to appreciating Bond as fictional character?

Anyway, Ringo Kid's original post with the pictures clearly shows no ill effects on Connery, Moore or Brosnan, but that last guy, Daniel Craig - he looks a little rough- rehab time for him!

Actually we have found something to like about all of the various Bonds. With one glaring exception. A twerp named George Lazenby played Bond in one movie only. I'm thinking the name of it was "In Her Majesty's Secret Service. What a GOOBER. The only thing that saved that movie for me was the Luscious Diana Rigg. I find it extremely ironic that the worst Bond was in the same movie with the best Bond-girl of all time.

But Lazenby wasn't the only problem with the movie I thought the story was lame and some of the girls were lousy actresses and unattractive. But that's just me.

I think the best opening bit in a Bond movie goes to has to go to Pierce Brosnan in Golden Eye (I think). He rides a motorcycle off a cliff to catch an airplane. He catches it and get off the motorcycle in mid air and into the plane and tosses the pilot out. I don't see how that one will ever be out done.

Still Miss Pam and I like good old Sean as the PERFECT bond.
. Roger Moore added a little humor to the character but still took are of business. But he played to the camera too much for my comfort with his little quips and sideways glances.
. Timothy Dalton was good but he was always wound up just a bit too tight. Not cool or swave and debonaire like Connery. He frequently over played his scenes.
. Pierce Brosnan. Good action but he too lacked Connery's cool demeanor. and he was a bit to much of a pretty boy to suit me but he had some good moments.
. Daniel Craig's version is just a stone cold killer. I think M (Judy Dench) was correct when she told him off in one scene calling him dead inside. It was a bit much for me to get used to but in a way I really like his version of Bond. No humor at all but he is tough and he is open for business. His opening scene in Casino Royal where they did the "free running" was almost as good as the one Brosnan did in Gloden Eye. He did his own stunts in that movie and that was pretty awesome.

By the way I think Judy Dench breathed some much needed life into the M character. We miss the original Moneypenny and Q a lot and these movies are just not the same without them.

We have all the bond movies and will occasionally watch them in order and I enjoy all of them but squirm a lot in the Lazenby one. Every time we go through them I'm always relieved when that one is over.

I wonder why John Cleese quit being Q's replacement? (not that Desmond Llewellyn can be replaced) I thought he had loads of potential.

Also--I read somewhere a few months ago that Lazenby regretted not doing more Bond films for fear of typecasting. Heck, if I were offered a pile of Platinum on a gold platter like that, id nab it in a heart beat. Id let they typecast me as it would be better working and making wheelbarrows full of money, than not working at all and becoming a has-been.

If I recall, Lazenby is an Aussie.

The bits of Craig's portrayal of Bond that I've seen were more intriguing to me than any of the others' work. A killer indeed; and in the latest film, dealing with the advance of age and cumulative wear and tear.

I really didn't like Moore as Bond, but I've not been all that delighted by any of his other work either.

I still like the complete spoof of medical research that was the basis for this whole thread.

we used to watch Roger Moore in the old TV shows The Saint. I thought he was kind of prissy in those shows. He butched up a little for the Bond movies but not much.....He was basically the same character as he was in The Saint. A wise cracking hero with manicured nails and coiffed hair.

Ive got two for you that might make you think differently of Sir Roger.

1) The Wild Geese. I thought him excellent as a Mercenary called Sean Finn.

2) Ffolkes (aka) North Sea Hijack. This role is a huge turnaround from his clean-shaven, handsome, suave, drinking, woman-chasing Bond image, to a rude, crude, socially unacceptable, cat-loving-woman-hating; terrorist-hunting leader of Ffolkes Ffusiliers. I loved how he used the double Ff.

I like cats, and I dont like people who don't.

PS, he especially hated, smokers--ESPECIALLY women smokers, and he also liked to knit images of cats. Whats there not to like?

It's time we got back to grey glenplaid suits, white shirts, thin black knit ties and a Fedora. Momma stayed home and took care of the kids, in exchange for which she got a nice house and an allowance. Men were even considerate enough to have a mistress so they wouldn't have to bother the wife. She got to go to the coast with the kids for the summer while dad stayed back in the city with the mistress and worked, getting over for the weekends.
A bucolic existence if you ask me.
Now we got a bunch of pantywaists who manscape, sip lattes and have a protein bar after work before going rollerblading with the wife.
Whew!!! Ya hit a nerve there.
I'll drink to that!

Men were made from ore in them days. Now we're made of recycled stuff. Like cars.

Default Stir the pot a little

Howdy,
Not enough "disturbing" going on here.
Roger Moore? If they wanted a hard drinking clown to play the part W.C. Fields would have made a better Bond than Moore, that is had he been alive to play him.
Bad to the bone I tell you!
Connery/Craig tied for first
Brosnan a decent second.
Dalton? I think he suffered from bad writers but might have been a good one
Fields? You just have to have a little imagination.
I just love the Bond threads.
Thanks
Mike

Geez...all this talk about Bond being an alcoholic makes me want a drink!

I'm a Connery fan for sure. He's the original and the best, IMO. Although I haven't seen the latest, I'm a fan of Craig's Bond. I like the dark, grittiness he bring to the character.
