For anyone who hasn't been through there, if traveling on I-45 through Huntsville, you can't help but notice the statue of Sam Houston there. He's only 60 feet tall.
Let's see, if the Rangers were the army in the Nueces Strip, an army of Rangers.....that would be 4 or 5 wouldn't it?

williamlayton, I remember your signature line as one of the more famous quotes of John Wesley Harding. While riding a train in Florida, he spied the 7 1/2 inch Colt SAA on the hip of a man coming down the aisle. He knew this was a trademark of the Texas Rangers. He uttered the famous line, and reached for his gun, at which time, the Ranger knocked him upside the head with said Colt, and took him into custody.

Is "Gone to Texas", w/Sam Elliot, so full of Hollywood that it has not been mentioned in this entire thread?

Yup---His dad was a preacher---in the town I grew up in (Livingston, Texas) and there were kin folk still in the area.
One was a Texas ranger in the 40's and 50's.
One riot one ranger---two, if there wasmore than one riot but in different towns.
I have told this story more than once---bear with me---My hero, Charlie, was a Border Ranger in the old days. He was in a café---the Rangers were respected but disliked for a lot of reasons--in S Texas--and was unable to get service. He shot a hole in the metal coffee urn and proceeded to fill his cup.
this is going off topic but worth the stories.
Blessings

Thanks. My maternal grandfather was born in the century before last. He pronounced Deaf as Deef. That old bunch also did not wash anything they worshed it.

Thanks for the info on Sam Houston. I grew up close to Houston, MO, those pups used to tell and retell an old urban legend that they were named after Sam Houston and he was originally buried there, until some riled Texans dug him up and took him home. No pun intended but I can now lay that rumor to rest.

I have a book, it's now in storage until we build a house, that is based on letters found in old Missouri homes. It would be good to reread it as it is mostly letters from Missouri folks who moved to Texas in this time frame. One could get lots of first hand info from that time. I do remember one person said before the war of independence that most everyone he met had relatives back in Missouri.

Andy Jackson sent all the tennesseans he could get to go to Texas. In the end It became part of the USA, just as he envisioned. Tennesseans are still a big part of Texas. I do believe Bowie was married into an old Mexican family that was related to Santa Anna. JMHO-YMMV ........

His name was John Wesley HARDIN, not Harding. Just FYI...
