Default Anyone heard this rumor?

I saw this posted on another board but, it was really sketchy and, not much detail.

There is apparently a rumor going around that the FBI is going to switch calibers again and probably going from the 40 S&W to 9mm. Just wondering if anyone has heard this rumor or if it is fact and not rumor and if it is fact what they will be going to.

Years ago, the FBI went from the 9 to the 40. They found that the 9 wasn't enough gun. Why would they switch back?

I read a recent article somewhere that said a lot of agencies, both federal and state were considering going back to 9mm. They sighted the reason as cost, the 9mm is cheaper. I guess budget trumps ballistics!

I would find it hard to believe that their would be significant cost savings in switching from 40 to 9. By the time they are done with all the contracting, planning, training, and buying of new 9mm handguns, magazines, (maybe even) holsters.... Ammo cost savings will be upside down. Of course, having worked for the federal government, I'll say that none of this oversight would surprise me.

Personally, I would think that a switch to the 357 sig would be a better and cheaper option if they feel change is needed.

Better advances in guns and bullet technology. There's nothing wrong in my opinion with the 9mm. It works fine. In the early 90s it was a different story.

Granted, I don't care what they carry because I'm not gunfighting them.

That's all opinion based off what others claim as facts. I didn't research it.

Also it is BULLET CONSTRUCTION. 15-20 years ago, Unless you could find and afford Super Vel ammo, you were limited to 115gr FMJ PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today 9mm ammo is as good as anything out there.

They should go back or revisit the 10mm. They did not go to 40S&W because it was too stout a round as many have said. From retired FBI agents I have talked to from that period it was almost all politics within the FBI & S&W.
Many FBI agents bought the 10mm 1076 from S&W in 1992/1993 after they were returned from Quantico.
Maybe too much info for this thread... to answer OPs question I have not heard that.

You mean the existing contracts to allow them to buy up to a certain amount at a fixed price over the next few years? There is no billion round stock pile of unused ammo sitting around in a government warehouse to keep it out of the hands of citizens or drive the price up.

Maybe they should stress marksmanship over caliber and not care what caliber gun the agents carry.

But then, that's not a rumor I heard on the internet so it can't be true.

The 10mm might be a good option but from what I have read it doesn't offer much advantage over the 40 unless you handload.

I thought the main downside of a 10MM was the longer case made the gun less suitable to small hands?

The true rumor is the FBI is going to a rimfire.

The rimfire will eliminate the availability of brass for reloading.

I recently heard a rumor than a generous philanthropist in a red suit travels the globe once a year leaving toys for children.

It is not a rumor. I have seen this report: pistol-training.com * Blog Archive * FBI & 9mm, and it has been confirmed by a couple of very knowledgeable people in the terminal ballistics/training field.

The 1076 was an utter failure for the Bureau. They had a lot of trouble with the platform (as did my agency when we had 1076s), and they were too big for the average plainclothes assignment. Remember that the FBI is not a police agency, so a uniformed duty size pistol is a fail.

There is a lot of information available about the lack of difference in performance between the common service calibers, and remember that a pistol is what you carry when you have no reason to expect a problem. Pistol rounds suck for fighting. A rifle is what one takes if a fight could be predicted.

If they are at a point at which the replacement of pistols is coming anyway, the savings in ammo cost is 20%+, with no change in ballistic performance, and better shooting performance by the agents. A win all the way around, if they get a platform that doesn't stink.

So THAT'S where all of the rimfire is going!!! Who would have thought that and because it is on the internet it HAS to be true. I knew I should have invested in more tactical .22's!!

I've heard the same thing. The explanation I heard was that the 9mm held more rounds and was a bit easier to shoot accurately.

If they switch maybe they will be returning all of the millions of rounds of .40 S&W ammo they bought up so we can buy it!!

My understanding (from a reliable, but unnamed highly placed source), is this administration wants to take all the guns away from the Federal Law Enforcement Agencies to include the FBI, and replace the agents arsenal with a skill set that includes advanced sensitivity training, an understanding of cultural and diversity differences, and specialized negotiation skills. Once we understand that all criminals are the way they are is from a challenging childhood, mean abusive Mother's, and lure of illegal drugs; they'll be no need for guns. Agents will however holster a large thermos of expensive, exotic coffee to stimulate the conversation and set the appropriate mood. The classic, blue-collar Thermos container will no longer be the dated marbled pale green; but will be offered in a variety of shades to coordinate with the day's attire, shoes, belt, etc.

I agree. Anywhere citizens are prohibited from carrying so should any federal agent or employee be prohibited from carrying.

Also if it is a felony to lie to a federal agent, it should likewise be a felony for any federal agent or politician to lie to a citizen or to the public in general.

Like my old pappy used to say, what is good for the goose is better or worse or something like that…..

Actually, it is going to be a .41 caliber, to negate the interchangeability with either 9MM or 40 bullets.

The cartridge will be a reverse bottleneck.

This has been in development for some 23 days.

Management feels that is enough development time, it is ready for full implementation.

The 41 Rimfire has repeatedly proven itself in its capability of dealing with attempted mortuary escapes.

It will be interesting to see what load they select for it. Modern 9mm loads make it a whole new game.

Rest assurred, they will find that long forgotten stash in 70 years.

Why all the confusing talk of several calibers? just make it a standard 45.

Sweet, when they start carrying 9mm. I'm taking my .40 Shield and i'll start carrying around the 9mm barrel in it. Then i can be cool like them.

What they are carrying, is useless to me. It's not like any of them are going to be throwing u any ammo during a fire fight. =-)

There are also frequent rumors that the M-9 Beretta is being replaced by the military. I'll believe these stories when they happen.

If the FBI change occurs, I hope that SIG P-220 or another resident agent here will tell us.

I would like to see the Bureau get away from the Glock.

Which is why they just let a contract for an additional 275,000 of them.

There is apparently a rumor going around that the FBI is going to switch calibers again and probably going from the 40 S&W to 9mm. Just wondering if anyone has heard this rumor or if it is fact and not rumor and if it is fact what they will be going to.
If it's on the internet it's certainly true. I heard they were going from 40S&W to Daisey Air Rifles. training will consist of shooting eyes out.

DHS placed the order, because they have a ton of agencies and personnel. The FBI is in DOJ. Separate and distinct entities and chains of command until one gets to the very top (POTUS).

The "Miami" (it did not happen in Miami, but nearby) shootout is an interesting reference. First, because it is the most significant incident since Newhall in terms of lessons learned about tactics. FBI agents are not cops, so tactics related to vehicle stops and associated violent resistance were not a front burner issue for them. Second, because it was the incident that resulted in modern handgun ballistics research. Third, because those agents had to fight through a crummy tactical situation against serious and arguably better armed opponents - none of the agents had a rifle. It taught us a lot about the nature of fighting against dedicated offenders, a lesson that is vital to LE of all types, and foreign to the cop haters who infest certain forums on the web, one in particular coming to mind. I avoid that one like the plague, and wish that most of its vocal members would put their bandwidth into adult entertainment research and self-gratification so they don't spout so much drivel, and hopefully never breed.

Now you had to go there and disrespect the best duty carry handgun ever devised.
