Default Possible Ivory ban

Interesting email I just received.

Hello Everyone!

Ivory Ban - The Presidential Advisory Committee that met 12/16/13 does plan
to recommend a total ban on ivory sales, within the US, to the task force on
Wildlife Trafficking. If you want to oppose that action please email
[email protected] before December 28th when they file their report. I have
attached a letter you can use but feel free to change it as may fit your
interests and work.

This is not a ban on new ivory but rather a ban on the sale of ALL ivory
that is in any form. This includes pre-ban and antique ivory in musical
instruments, knives, guns, cues, etc. and will make Grandma's piano illegal
to sell if it has ivory keys. This sounds ludicrous but it is true. If this
passes then it will take the form of a bill that will be set before Congress
in 2014.

Presently this ban on the sale of ivory is to include fossil mammoth ivory
as well as pre-ban and antique elephant ivory.

Please forward this information to everyone you think may want to voice
their opposition to this type of government control.

Sincerely ,

David Warther

Maybe I'm just over-suspicious, but I have my doubts about that one. The fact that it cites a "Presidential Advisory Committee" smells odd. For an ivory ban, including antiques and pre-ban goods? It would involve changing the law, and I can't see it getting through Congress with everything else they have to fight about. Nor do I see it as the kind of issue a presidential committee would take a hand in.

I may be wrong. I am on occasion. Frequent occasions. But I doubt this one.

Whew! You had me going for a minute. When I read the headline I asked myself "Great, now where am I going to get soap that floats?".

Off the point, but David Warther of Dover, OH, has to be a member of the Warther cutlery family.

Close to the same topic, while at Rocklers buying some Ebony wood for some gun grips, the sales mgr mentioned that Ebony and Cocobolo are one step away from being listed as an endangered species....The prices and lack of selection reflect it, too.

As legislation of late is based more on emotion rather than logic, I would not be surprised if a ban on Ivory were enacted.

I have posted this before, but David Warther has a very interesting letter about Ivory and elephant conservation:

Default Don't buy it

I would think it possible to come up with a ban on new ivory, I doubt it would affect existing ivory. Everybody knows that the president loads a committee with like minded people and come up with these laws that bypass congress.

Just like he signs into law bills that allow senior citizens to make more money from reverse mortgages.
