Carhartt jackets
What happened to Carhartts? First I had a real hard time finding the old "brush popper jacket" (unlined heavy canvas) to protect a down jacket while riding through mesquite and all the other thorny stuff around here. Finally I did find online,it came in, and it's soft as a shirt!!
The old ones you couldn't fold them any easier than folding a trash can lid!
I'll starch the daylights out of it, hope it works, but it's the weight of the material that's lacking.
Anybody know of a tough canvas jacket to replace the old brush popper?
Other than Driz-a-Bone, cause the Aussies charge a arm and a leg.

Check out Duluth Trading Company. They sell "Fire Hose Canvas" jackets and pants.
Much of Carhartt's clothing is now made overseas and the quality of the fabric pales in comparison with the older USA made material.

Check out Filson Mens Jackets | Mens Coats | Outerwear | Filson
Not cheap but well worth the money. I finally wore out a pair of their Oil Finish "Tin Cloth" pants a few years ago. Had them for at least 15 years.

Farmers CO-OP and Tractor Supply stores still have the good ones here.

I will second the Duluth recommendation, although it is not made in the US. The quality of most of their stuff is excellent. I have some of their fire hose stuff that is what Carhartt used to be.
It seems Carhartt has gone the way of Milwaukee and DeWalt brand power tools. There MAY be some Japan made model on the top end that are decent, but most anything you find with those names at your neighborhood stores are Chinese junk.
When Carhartt became almost a fashion statement in rural areas while my kids where in high school, they adopted a typical business model. Attach the established name to **** offshore goods and make hay while the sun shines. They know most people are too busy getting home to crack open a beer and watch wrestling to care where anything is made.
My uniform shirts and pants - a well known long time uniform supplier based in the US - made in Mexico
The buttons on my shirts - made in China
My duty belt and every leather item on it - Safariland - made in Mexico
My boots - Danner - Made in VietNam
My boot socks - Made in Indonesia
My duty gun - Made in Austria
My flashlight - Made in the USA of US and imported components.
My hat, my cuffs, and my badges are made solely in the US. Thats it!
I recently had a new American Flag patch put on my jacket after the original was damaged.... guess what? Made in China!
Sorry.... I got off track....
Firehose from Duluth holds up great, and they stand behind it. Their customer service is great. I returned one shirt to them in the last decade that I have been using their products. I had been wearing it a year. I called them and told them where it was coming apart from what appeared to be a bad seam to me. They sent me a new shirt with no need to return the one I had and wait for a replacement. I have had to return a couple of pairs of pants that the family fashion critic said were "not the shade she expected". No problem. Fast no questions exchange.
Sorry for the rant.

That's cause the Federal Reserve and the USPS don't have to make a profit, they just have to have access to the treasury.

I recently purchased a 5.11 tactical "Ranch Coat" instead of the Carhart one you looked at. I really like it, and it has lots of places to hide things like a gun and some accessories.

Just this morning I received a jacket from my union with their logo for my retirement -- made by Union Line. Union Line 30130 Heavyweight Duck Blanket Lined Jacket Made in USA They used to give Carhart jackets when they were still union made in the USA. This looks to be just like the "old" Carharts.

Get Filson instead. I am still using my Carhart work jackets I bought back in 2000 prior to my first trip to China. They wear well but I am seeing the age in them. Next ones will be filson instead. All of my Filson stuff has worn extremely well and their tin oil cloth is very solid.

I'll second the Filson's. Years ago I bought a pair of their tin cloth overalls for coon hunting/hog hunting. I recently looked at their catalog & was shocked how high their prices are now.

I was looking at a purchased part today at work.
It was "made in a China" but "designed in America". Well, there's one job.

Too bad about Carhartt.
Filson Tin Cloth is hell for stout and nothing stops briars like it does--partly because of the very tight weave. But standard tin cloth is waxed and it gets hot in a hurry. They do make unwaxed versions.
The Duluth stuff sounds like it'd be worth looking into.

I will say that I recently was looking for a tough enough for rough use rain jacket and found just what I was looking for in an obscure part of a local Carhartt dealers store. Has a detachable hood and nice long sleeves which to me are very important when its coming down cats and dogs. Its heavy enough to double as a great jacket if worn over a sweater or heavy wool shirt. Great jacket and doesn't make any more noise in the brush than any other canvas type jacket.
