Duck Dynasty the reality show and real life reality.
Most recently I've given quite a bit of thought on how DD will end.
My wife and I watch the show but are getting weary of the overt commercialism, walk into a convenience store and there is a giant card board cut out full of DD Sun Glasses, CD's, hats and other stuff. Walk into a Wally world or big box sporting shop and it is non stop Duck calls, DD rubber boots, hats, beards, sunglasses, Cd's and stuffed pillows. Chia beards on TV?????? Wow.
I thought overselling the brand would kill them.
Again we see that one's personal opinion uttered aloud can kill the golden goose or cook yours.
I have always felt that there is a very fine line between dislike and hate. It is very easy to cross. Folks forget that you look both ways before entering an intersection. It is applicable to think twice before entering your mouth into the intersection.
Many years ago my son had to have a Star Wars Sleeping bag for sleep overs with his little friends, my daughters had to have the Back Street Boys sleeping bags. A few years after that you could buy nice little sleeping bags for 50 cents or a buck at yard sales. I bought them, washed them and used them for pads in dog kennels, a pad next to my chair for them. My old Lab could sleep like a Jedi next to me. Soon my Lab will be sleeping on DD fuzzy beards and duck bags dreaming of the next mallard.

I wonder more about how that show got started than how it will end. No offense to any of it's fans, I've tried and tried to like it, many of my friends and family members love it, but I just don't get it.
Maybe it should come with a laugh track

They traded business longevity for quick money. From what I've gathered, Duck Commander went from selling 60K duck calls per year to close to a million once the show took off. The vast majority of those were obviously purchased as novelty items and will eventually return to the market. The question becomes, how will Duck Commander cope with hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of their duck calls hitting eBay and Odd Lot/Dollar stores for pennies once the show is old news and the novelty wears off? The answer is they won't.
Now, it's always possible they'll plow the money they're making now into something profitable in the future, but I get the feeling people who go for the quick cash like this tend not to think that way.

I find them more entertaining than any "real" celebrities. They probably baited Phil into this, knowing what he'd say. Good for him.

It's a rare man indeed that speaks his mind plainly these days. I like the show and some of the players, Phil especially. He didn't say anything to offend me. Even if he insulted "Eye-Talians", wouldn't offend me a bit. Then again, short of a bullet to the head, I'm pretty hard to offend. Joe

It is a very interesting story. They did a Duck hunting show on one of the hunting networks, Duck Commander. The different personalities and craziness led to a spin off, Duck Dynasty.
I went to youtube and watched some Duck Commander clips, you could see the humor and interactions that were easily rolled into the spinoff.
We did not watch either but many folks kept asking us or telling us about it. We watched Duck Dynasty and it was pretty funny, sort of reminds one of I love Lucy, homey honest fun with a fall guy or two and a crotchety uncle.
Phil actually is not on the show a lot, it is the interactions between the ineffective DD Corp CEO oldest son Willy, Uncle Si and Willy's brothers that fills most episodes.
I hate the over the top commercialism but do enjoy the show. And that's a fact Jack.

I enjoy the show. I know the situations are scripted. I don't enjoy it as much as I use to, but it's still better than most the other shows on TV right now. Simply put, it's good fun.
That said, A&E should be allowed to do whatever they want, just like any other business. I don't think he should have been "fired". He worded his statement in a non-disrespectful manner. I also don't think other people should be fired when they respectfully disagree with the 2nd amendment. Now if Phil Robertson said, "F*gs are evil and deserve to die," then yes, I don't blame anybody for firing him, even if he was practicing his 1st amendment rights. I would have the same feelings if someone said, "All gun owners deserve to have their first born children shot to death."
My point is no matter the topic of conversation, people shouldn't be punished for practicing their 1st amendment rights as long as it isn't offensively worded. I see on a lot of gun forums, members calling for other people to be fired because they hate guns, but they support incidents like what happened to Phil. This is similar to the pot calling the kettle black. That's my 2 cents on this situation.

"Reality" starts with a premise: A small family business catches the public fancy and now they have money.
The "Reality Show" goes more like this: 21st Century Beverly Hillbillies acting out every Appalachian stereotype on a weekly basis.
They're all millionaires, laughing all the way to the bank. The marketing model looks to be much the same as Orange County Choppers was several years ago. They'll wring it out for every cent they can and put that logo on anything and everything that holds ink, takes thread, or can be stapled, glued or molded.
To A&E, and to the DD Brand, it's all about the Benjamins. Certainly, one of their actors has the same right as any citizen to speak his mind. But the consequences of those words will be measured in decimal places.

my guess is that phil is not losing any sleep over this. have you guys ever heard of a professional QB named Terry Bradshaw? i'd bet my paycheck most of you have. phil was the starter at Louisiana Tech when Bradshaw was there. Bradshaw got the starter position when Phil quit because it interfered with his duck hunting.
as far as the commercialism...the robertson's own none of that except duck commander and buck commander. A&E owns the duck dynasty brand and they are the ones that have commercialized the brand. i'm not saying that phil and the family don't profit from it, but i'm sure it's not as much as we would like to think...
if i remember correctly, the ones with more air time get less than 50 grand a show...for as popular as the show is, that is not very much compared to other shows. still too much for what they do though.

I'm not a DD fan but do occasionally watch the show if there's nothing better on. I've never been offended and doubt anything they say would.
I mean who really cares?

A&E immediately caters to one group by suspending Phil and in return the totally pee off the millions who watch the show.
Methinks a bad business move.
He is a fundamental Christian........What the heck did they THINK his views were on the subject!!!

I've got a ton of respect for the Robertsons and I agree with Phil 100% about his sexual proclivities. They don't need A&E but they are committed Christians and are using the DD platform to spread the gospel of Jesus. God wont be mocked, bet your life on it.

I honestly don't get why people are offended. Someone was quoted as saying he doesn't think what some do is "right." Why do they care? Lots of people think I'm not right.....

What profit is it to man if he gains the whole world, but loses his soul?
Only the PC crowd can't grasp the fact if you don't like him, vote with your remote and don't watch it. We need to start beating them back into their little PC holes and end this madness. JMO

He said what he believed.....When has that become a crime in the country that was built on freedom of speech...We have sold out to political correctness. I guess this will hurt the TV show. I know nothing about duck hunting, but I love southern cooking....I like people that tell it like it is even if that like is theirs alone...I'm not a super Christian, in fact I have never considered myself a regular church goer much less a fundamentalist. I guess going to churche for funerals makes me a believer...However I give the man credit for the guts to state HIS convictions...I have a lot of respect for him...BTW I have only watched the show a few times......A lot more refreshing than watching a teen idol TWERPING....I guess we will see just how many fans the show has...I guess I'm old fashioned I like women, I sort of think God wanted that way...Population is it...If it had been Adam and Adam, or Eve and Eve none of us would be here anyway to state our God given opinions....I think I'll start watching the show just to provoke the elites...God Bless America......New Duck Dynasty fan!!

The first episode I watched one of them was buying a motorcycle and he had never ridden and didn't know hhow to ride one.
Another one was about going turkey hunting. I've seen bits and pieces of several other shows but had to let it go.
These folks are business people and not actors. As they recite their scripted lines I find myself squirming with embarrassment for the speaker. 99% of the humor escapes me.
But I tried to like it....I tried. I can't help the feeling that I'm missing a good show but, well, there ya have it.
As far as the current dust up with Phil, well I'm not effected by it in any way and have no information or opinion about about or interest in it.

About A&E's "business decision:" News flash, the folks you're sucking up to ain't never watched the show. They drove way outta the way to be "offended." Hope they choke on it. Joe

There are millions of people out there who don't disagree with what he said. What these people have learned is not to speak unless it is "politically correct", to pick your words carefully so as not to "offend" anyone. This will change the minds of no-one, just make more people angry at being unable to speak their minds in the "Land of Free Speech".

I don't think the show needed any more attention than it already had so I doubt this was a publicity move. Some subjects are "out of bounds" when it comes to freedom of speech, like it or not.

DD is the largest and most successful show on cable...EVER. Makes perfect sense to fire one of the personalities as a result of complaints from people who don't watch the show and drive ad revenues.

I still remember back in the day when Phil had to borrow money to get DC off the ground. Phil was actually his high school starting QB, over Terry Bradshaw (many may remember Terry).
Terry went after his dreams of being a QB only because Phil decided to chase Ducks. In the end, both were successful. But Terry Bradshaw may have never been known had Phil not decided to go after the Ducks.
A&E needs Duck Dynasty, Duck Dynasty doesnt need A&E.
They were well off long before A&E discovered them.

A&E is so disgusted with the guy that their schedule for the rest of December is loaded end to end with DD episodes 'round the clock.
So much for THEIR principles.

Our God is bigger than A&E and all those out to discredit him and his followers. I'm proud of our brothers like Phil Robertson who plainly speak the simple truth and bow to none other than the creator of the universe.

I hope Phil and family find a clever attorney and sue the **** out of A&E for discrimination. Phil was speaking in an interview not connected to A&E ...... sounds like A&E is saying they are firing him for practicing his religion.

What was said was in no way offensive, he stated his view in a clear way. I don't have to like his views but I do defend his right to say it.

I've never watched a whole DD show. It was just not my program but I have contacted A&E to tell them I am against PC radical pressure that they gave into.

I know there were a lot of Chinese Dynasties through out there long history. I remember reading about the Xia Dynasty, the Shang Dynasty, the Western Zhou Dynasty, the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, the Southern and Northern Dynasties, the Qin Dynasty, the Western Han Dynasty, Xin Dynasty, Eastern Han Dynasty, the Western Jin Dynasty, the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the Sui Dynasty, the Tang Dynasty, the Northern Song Dynasty, the Southern Song Dynasty, the Liao Dynasty, the Jin Dynasty, and the Yuan Dynasty.
But I don’t remember no Dang Duck Dynasty.

guess I'll have to "vote with my remote" No Phil, no A&E for me! It takes guts to make a stand, that's what I stand for, individual rights. Their is no right NOT to be offended that I know of.

The man is asked to do an interview for GQ magazine this man is a Christian who tries to follow the teachings of the bible. GQ asked him what he believes is a sin and he answers based on what he's read in the bible and now his employer A&E does not like what the bible says and fires him. In the land of the free they are now firing people for there religious beliefs expressed away from there job. Aren't these the same beliefs from the same bible that the founding fathers were reading when they wrote the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. Aren't we the same country that sends it's solders all over the world to squelch religious persecution when it occurs. Now liberals in this country have determined that religious persecution is justified. A citizen reads the bible and relates what he believes it to say in public when asked. I don't have any idea what it looked like in Hitler's Germany when they began persecuting the Jews. I just don't think we as a country want to allow this kind of persecution to get started without speaking out, it doesn't matter under what guise the anti religious liberals use to justify it.

Tucked away in the east side of Texas hill country is China, just east of China is Louisiana. They have lots of water, ducks go there to winter. They shoot ducks and make some neat Cajun dishes.
When you shoot a few ducks you are a hobby hunter. When you've killed (X+Y) x 100000/200 x (A+B) = ducks for 5 decades it becomes a dynasty.
I knew the Tang Dynasty bunch, they invented a powdered Orange drink that fizzled out.

When you consider who ownes A & E (ABC Disney), you can see where
the problem is . ABC/Disney is controled by (can't say it here , it might offend some people) . Their is a clear direction these people want to take this country . I agree with Phil's comments and his right in a free society to say those comments . I am glad the entire cast has decided to stick together and keep their morals and values intact .
I am sure another network will pick them up , very soon , if not, hey, they have had their day in the sun , and they walk off the stage with integrity , pride, and honor .
