Default I found this interesting

This is one of those "how funny do you talk" quizzes.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2...224040000j0400

The interesting thing was the question about lawyer. It was "do you call it law, like flaw, or loy, like boy?"

I said law-yer. But according to the site, that is only used in about a fifth of the country. Mostly south-east, plus most of Oklahoma and parts of Texas. Everyone else says Loy-yer.

Y'all say law-yer or loy-yer?

Law-yer. I'm from St. Louis and never heard it pronounced any other way.

That is funny. NYC folks are the most provincial in the entire country and wouldn't know what we do in the rest of this country if their very life depended upon it. Second place goes to California, of course. I have lived and worked in most states and have never heard it pronounced 'loyer'.

I think the denizens of most mega-cities become extremely provincial because they believe if it doesn't happen in their towns it couldn't be important. Viennese speaking of Hungary used to say, "Asia begins three miles east of Vienna."

I love the regional accents in this country. Everything except standard broadcast Midwest-California English is music to me.

By the way, the map at the end of the quiz wouldn't load for me.

Living in Montana my most similar cities are Salt Lake, Spokane and Tacoma.I am fairly sure that Butte was not an option as none of the questions were in Butteseian.

Interesting, my result is this:

"See the pattern of your dialect in the map below. Three of the most similar cities are shown Louisville, Little Rock, and Lexington."

According to this, my three cities are Chatanooga, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte. I grew up around Pittsburgh and currently live in Philly?!? Who knew Southerners say yinz or youse, I always thought it was y'all.

Before I watched Paula Deen, I didn't know that all, awl, and oil were homonyms. Around here, if we can fit a "w" in it, we will.
