Mercury Astronaughts
A few weeks ago I posted about Josey Wales. Another of my favorite movies is The Right Stuff. I've had the DVD for a while but Mary bought me the BluRay for Christmas. It's a whole new ballgame. Not only is it sharper and clearer but it has a whole separate disk of special features, some narrated by the original Mercury Seven astronaughts. A few things that are stylized in the movie are cleared up in the special features, notably the Gus Grissom story. Wally Schirra tells that story.
The Academy Award winning score by Bill Conti sounds wonderful and adds so much to the movie it's almost a character in itself.
I can't recommend this movie enough!

One of the things I like about the movie is it is very true to the great book by Tom Wolfe. One of the rare times where the movie is just about as good as the book.

I admit I never watched the movie, I dont know why? but probably because of other great movies of the same time frame. Anyway, I was buying those 12 inch GI Joe collectables for my Nephews when they were young enough, and about 2 years ago, I discovered I still had the two Astronauts I bough for them. Both were Mercury Astronauts--but I cant remember who they were? I gave them to a neighbors kid about that time. I found a couple others I forgot to give to them, but kept them for myself: Patton, John "Manila John" Basilone and Robert E. Lee. :-))

Ringo, that is a wide gap in your movie watching. Not only is it wonderfully directed and acted but it is wildly patriotic. You'll like it!

Great movie, and well worth it. Plus, the 'easter egg' appearance of a certain famous someone caused me to spit soda the first time I noticed it.

Great movie
I can watch this again and again. There is some dramatization but knowing the real story helps. It is amazingly accurate except for a few spots.

I have always liked the narrator. I thought he had some of the best lines.
(I guess he was a pretty good drummer, too.)

"The Right Stuff".......
One of my favorite movies of all time. Wonderful music soundtrack as well. This movie SHOULD have won the academy award for best picture, but did not. In fact, it should have swept the oscars for that year.
A classic example why the academy awards are pure b.s.

Agreed on all counts.
Brilliant book. And the movie was absolutely excellent. Just look at the number of fine actors who emerged from it.

Fine movie. I never quite understood the inclusion of Royal Dano's symbolic mysterious, preacherly character, who doesn't appear in the book, but I didn't mind it.

There's a lot of mysticism in the movie. The aborigines who surrounded Glenns capsule with magical sparkles that saved his life. I think Dano was just one of the mystical beings, except he brought tidings of death instead of protection and life. I'd hate to see him darkening my door after seeing that movie.

Yeah Mike, I figured you did but I like this movie so much I was just trying to keep the thread going for a while.
The movie was not a great box office success when it was released so I suspect a lot of people, like The Ringo Kid, have not seen it.
I would love to see it re-released to the theaters so I could see it on the big screen.

He is seen in several shots handing out plates of food in Pancho's. I think it's steaks and it looks pretty good.

Royal Dano
The preacher character was to drive home the need for a LOT of funerals among the flying community and that the mourning also extended to family and friends. Kind of like pointing out that if you crash they will name a street at Edwards AFB after you.

Ron,
This is one of those movies that whenever it comes on i watch it.
Great story and well acted. To think how close those fellas we're
to not making it back gives me chills. The parts with Chuck Yeager
and his brethren chasing the sound barrier are also insightful
as to what the early days of chasing the sound barrier we're like.

The busted ribs, the broomstick to close the hatch and flying it anyway with no way to get out of it if the plane went down. It's one thing to think about an accomplishment like breaking the sound barrier AFTER it's been down, but quite different before it's done and nobody knows what will happen. Kind of like we used to look up at the moon and think what it was like there and if we could make it to the moon someday.
