An actual game camera picture
and it is not me looking to see how many pictures it has taken, or was that bigfoot? Anyway, gonna move the camera back in the woods deeper and try to get pictures of the black bear that other people around have gotten pictures of. What would be good bait for a black bear? I have a freezer burned rear quarter of deer. We also have a mountain lion pass through every now and then and I figger he'd probably like that.
Peace,
Gordon

There has NEVER been a doughnut (Krispy Kreme) that lasted long enough at my house to get stale. Think of all the starving children in the world that don't have a doughnut tonight, and finish your dessert!

Gordon,
You might want to put your bait way over by your
property line. You don't want all kinds of critters, maybe
even grumpy critters, too close to where you like to lie
out on a chaisse lounge. That is, unless you're planning
on shooting them right away.
By the way, that cam takes some nice pics.

Yogi and Bo bo? Forget the stale donuts. I prefer them that way. Even my Bday cake I allow to get stale before I start on it. The flaw in that theory is everyone else just pigs out and there's none left.

Gal up by the home place baked a chocolate cake and sang "come out, come out, wherever you are" last fall and shot a nice bear over it. Trick is to shoot the bear before he gets to the cake so you have desert with your bear roast.

Good advice on putting the bait far away from the house....this was a few hours after cooking over our fire pit.

Guess I'd need a tranquilizer gun then. Dart him and take him into the inner city. They'd never miss half the galutes we've got drawing freebies down there.

try pouring some honey in a tin can and then put holding a propane torch to the bottom of the can until it smokes. The smell will travel quite a ways and linger in surrounding branches and trees. Bacon grease may work to but don't put that in can and torch it.

The Rangers and Naturalists in Yellowstone that take people on "Bear Hikes" tell us -
"Bears don't want to confront us, so we want them to hear us coming. They will then seek safety and try to avoid us. We wear bells around our wrists and ankles so they can hear us walking down the trails. One of the tell tale signs of being in a bear area is to locate their droppings. You can tell Black Bear droppings because it has berries in it. You can tell Grizzly Bear droppings because it has bells in it"

In Alaska, using the deer quarter could get you in trouble. 1) wanton waste of game meat is illegal 2) feeding wild animals (bear) is also against the law.
Any sporting shop that carries fishing gear should have scent for bait, look for 'shrimp oil' or 'herring oil'. In a pinch, use the liquid from a can of sardines.
Anoint a tree trunk or better yet a rotting stump. Mr. Bear will find it
(edit to add) The idea is to get him to show for a photo OP, you don't have to buy him dinner for that.

So Yogi Bear is too good for garden variety Tuna? The house cats sure come running when they even hear the sound of the can opener. Given that reaction, I'd sure not want to run a battery powered one in Mountain Lion country!
Where's BearBio in all this talk? You'd figure he'd know all kinds of ways to lure them in close enough for a photo op.
Back to the freezer burned deer quarter. Its not being wasted, its being used as bait for a bigger critter.

Now I realize game laws vary from state to state, but here the law states "all edible meat will be salvaged for human consumption". In other words "If you're not going to eat it, find someone that wants it".
No game meat, that's either animal or fish can be used for bait in either trap, pot, or hook.

You can open a can of sardines half way and tie it high off a limb.
