Default What a difference 1/2-1" of barrel makes...

You know what they say about opinions I can love a S&W barrel length, but subtract or add .5-1" and I don't care for it as much, though I might own one or more. I'm not talking about the looong barrels that I really like. Why can so little mean so much...to me anyway.

Most of these I own, so I'm not knocking other's opinions. So why does a:

1) 3 1/2" N frame look so much better than a 3" or 4"?
2) 5" K frame look so much better than a 4" or 6"?
3) 6 1/2" N Frame look so much better than a 6"? Really, 1/2"?

That's the short list. Don't even get me started on Rugers and Colts Questions? Comments? Outrage?

I thought this was about velocity, in which case, yes, a three-inch J-frame does give some 80 FPS over a true snub. Just one of its advantages.

I don't think a 3.5-inch M-27 looks better than a four-inch and think they should have made four inches a normal option for a lot longer than was the case.

In the M&P/Model 10, etc., the four-inch heavy bbl. looks better than it would if longer. And I'm somewhat torn between the std. four-incher and the five-inch.

I think when we are young starting out we are influenced by gun writers and others we think are professional gun people. I started out with long barrels and target grips. Then when I had to carry them on my job I soon opted for short barrels and service grips. I let skeeter talk me into 5" barrels. On top of that, I think there is the cool factor of just having something different or a model a little harder to find. Here is kind of the way I went. Been working my way down since I cant hit anything anyway.

I figure that has got more to do with it than anything else. Larry

I hear you. I love the 3" K-frame more than any other K, as far as handling, and look, but really don't care for the 2 1/2" at all.

Well, I agree with number 1 and I think that is because of the relationship of the barrel to the underlug...looks very cool.

As for number 2, I think it's just that the 5" is less common.

As for number 3, I don't see any real difference and I think you might need help...
