Another effort to recall a WWII movie:
I saw it in the theater MANY years ago. It was about a Wehrmacht soldier who was alone and behind the Allied lines. It dealt with his efforts to stay at large. In a ruined city, as I remember.
I'm fairly certain it was in black and white. There was a sound track, but no dialogue and no musical score. The effect was eerie and the mood very tense.
I'm probably one of about twenty-seven people nationwide who saw it, but I thought it was fascinating then.
I can't recall the title or the name of the young actor.
Anyone have an idea what it was? Or is my aging memory playing tricks and what I saw was "Song Of The South"?

Possible, but somehow that's not ringing any bells.
Nope, I Googled "The One That Got Away", and it bears no resemblance to what I saw. No aircraft, no extensive cast of characters, no dialogue. The young soldier in my recollection was a grunt, I think.
I may be hallucinating...

Its the only one I can think of--unless your talking about a foreign movie? I know of a couple like: As Far As My Feet Will Carry Me--which aint very old, and a Russian made movie--which aint that old either.

I remember one where the guy escaped and found another man dead and entangled in a barbed wire fence; suspended in it. He was very cold, so he got the dead mans sweater off and put it on himself. That seen left an impression on me, but I don't recall the name of that movie. Hope that helps.

f anybody could play a German soldier better than Hardy Kruger I would guess only a few could do it. Wow I forgot how young we all were...Didn't Hardy play a soldier for hire with Richard Burton in The Wild Geese? I'm getting old!!!! You can count on The Ringo Kid to know about those older military movies...He should write a column on old movies. I'll bet he has a extensive movie library.....

Hardy Kruger played a professional hunter who backed up the animal trappers in the John Wayne flick "Hatari" (61/62). Also an SS general in "A Bridge Too Far." Many others. If you Google him, you'll see he's had an interesting life.
Try as I might, I can't come up with the OP's flick inquiry. Sounds like it might be a foreign film.

Sounds like something in the spirit of the flick I'm trying to recall.
It may have been a foreign import, though I saw it in a second-run theater that didn't usually show them.
I won't lose sleep over this, but I'm certainly curious what it was.

There's "Seven Years in Tibet", which is about a German POW who flees to Tibet.

The all silent bit does seem like a Euro idea. Given the hero, I'm guessing the film is German.

This does not follow precisely the plot you have described, but it's the closest thing I can think of, and it came to mind immediately. The film is "Decision Before Dawn".
The most glaring discrepancy between this movie and the one which you describe is that the young Wehrmacht soldier in this film is alone, but behind his own lines. This is because he was captured by the Allies, and has volunteered for and been trained to act as a spy for the Allies. He parachutes back into Germany, with another P.O.W./spy and their Allied "handler". The main actors are Richard Basehart, Oskar Werner (as the young German soldier), and Hans Christian Blech. It's quite a good movie, watching the young German moving about his own country, seeing the plight of his countrymen, having to make painful decisions about his loyalties, without arousing suspicion or being captured.
Here is more info: Decision_Before_Dawn
I only just recently watched "The One That Got Away". I had never even heard of it until then. I enjoyed it quite a bit, a good story.
Tim
Edited to add: Having reread the original post, I guess there is one other major discrepancy. You say your movie has no dialogue? None whatsoever? If that is true, then it certainly is not "Decision Before Dawn". Sorry, I had overlooked that point originally.

The only aircraft in this was when he tried to steal one trying to escape. He was trying to steal an experimental British fighter--posing as a Dutch pilot.

He also lives part time in Africa but his main home is a large apartment in Berlin that overlooks the Brandenburg Gate.

It COULD be: Le Grande Illusion--its an oldie but not a silent film. Erich von Stroheim is the chief German actor in that film.

A number of German POWs in the US escaped, including 25 at one time over at Phoenix. The plan was usually to go to Mexico. The Mexicans were shall we say less than fully supportive of our war efforts. One got to within 10 miles of Mexico, don't believe any made it.

I didnt fully read the post that said it had no speaking parts. The only one I can think of that possibly fits the description, but it wouldnt have been about a German soldier. I cant think of the title off hand? but I think I know the one being thought about,

None made it. There is an excellent book on it called: The Faustball (Football) Tunnel.
Also, Decision Before Dawn is based on the excellent book: Dare Call It Treason by: George Howe.

Mostly from years of watching the older stuff and come across good stuff more often by accident. :-)) Keith has book experience and maybe with her help?? a book might be possible. She ghost writes and does P.R. stuff.
