The first time I saw that picture was in an original newspaper clipping my father showed me around 1995. I thought the ceremony was on Main St. by the old Foley's Dept. Store. I see the Lowes and Metropolitan theaters in the picture. I remember taking the bus into town to go see movies in those theaters when I was in my early teens. I think they were on Walker St. Just off Main St., a bit further east of where Foley's was.

Did you know that Sgt Joe Friday was married to Julie London?
She was in Vegas and on the Dean Martin show and on emergency 51 as a hospital nurse. That was Joe Friday's show too.

The old pictures of Houston have this forth generation Houstonian thinking. Really it's only three generations of native Hostonians. The forth generation moved here from Indianola, TX after the town was abandoned due to too many hurricanes.

It's Beer Time!

Today I'm having a local Houston craft beer, Karbach Mother In Lager. An excellent full bodied black lager.

This is the first time I've tried it, and I like it. I'll buy it again if I see a deal on it.

Cheers!

Now back to those old pictures of Houston.

If those mule carts are parked on Bellaire/Holcombe where it intersects with Main Street the picture would have been taken from where the Shamrock Hilton would eventually be built and demolished. Today, the background would be of the Texas Medical Center and a light commuter rail line running left/right would scare them mules away. Bellaire Blvd. and Holcombe are basically the same street the name of the street changes when you enter the City of Bellaire and stays Bellaire Blvd as it continues south and west. Trust me, I went to Bellaire High School, but lived four blocks away in Houston.

Julie London later divorced Jack Webb and married Bobby Troup, he played Dr. Joe Early on Emergency as well, he also wrote the Get Your Kicks on Route 66 song.
They were all one big happy family back in the day!

My goodness, that thing dates to 1917. I had no idea it was older than my father. That statue is still there today. Herman Park, a couple of museums, Rice University, and the Texas Medical Center are all in the same general area.

Same here. I think it important that as we approach the anniversary of this tragedy, we reflect on the enormity of the event and the ensuing tumult that was part of the national fabric of 1960's America.

BCC, since you have been on here (and I have gone back and read EVERY post) you have never made an unkind, tasteless or crass post. I notice these things and, chemo brained as I may be, I have a memory. Since my filter is starting to come off so I'm just callin em as I sees em.

Thanks right back attcha.

...edit...I found this on a City of Houston website...

...The bronze equestrian statue of General Sam Houston is the most iconic piece of Houston civic art. It has stood in the traffic circle just inside the entrance to Hermann Park since its unveiling on August 16, 1925. It stands on a gray granite arch constructed by Frank Teich (1856 – 1939). The general points from atop his horse, Saracen, toward the plains next to the San Jacinto River where he ultimately defeated the army of Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, winning independence for Texas. Enrico Filiberto Cerrachio created the sculpture in 1924 after it was commissioned by the Women’s Club of Houston. The Club raised the funds for the Sam Houston Monument after a March 1, 1917, newspaper article called for a monument to the founder, first president, and first governor of Texas...
Those dates are more in line with my thinking. My Dad was born in 1923 and that is the time period I would have ascribed to the General Sam statue. I could always ask my father, he remembers stuff from the early days better than things from the last twenty years.

During my four years at U of H I parked many times in The Jep parking lot. The stadium was a relic at that time, with no seats in it. The Cougars played in the Astrodome during that time period.

The Jep was later rebuilt and renamed Robertson Stadium. Robertson has since been demolished and TDECU (Texas Dow Employee Credit Union) Stadium has been built in its place.

Looking at the price on that ticket, I understand why we only went to college football or Colt 45 games when I was a kid.

Go Cougs!

Just wait until you crawl forward of the tailgate with an air mattress, wool blanket, bottle of sangria and someone you like

Good long drift today hope everyone had a good Friday no matter the date. France seems to be having a bad day,we should all keep them in our prayers and keep our eyes open and our powder dry. Thanks to all who post here for allowing me to be part of this group.

Snubby my son has a new one and loves it, all black.
I'm even considering buying one if the right one comes along! After having the Chrysler 300 with the Hemi in it now I'm sold on Chrysler!

It's 71 degrees in the desert this evening from a man who has a new thermometer. Bad times in France today, as vonn says keep your powder dry boys we could be next.

That was a deciding factor in our truck choice.
Ever since West Virginia's declared me as a useless cripple, I don't go to work any more.
My wife works as a home health care aid right here in town and walks to work as long as the weather cooperates.
I'd say we've burned about a half a tank so far.
But it is a big tank.
